An exposition of the results on synchronization and state estimation of nonlinear systems over the limitedband communication channel is given. Relevance of passifiability condition for controlled synchronization of master-slave nonlinear systems for first order and full-order coder/decoder pairs is demonstrated. The algorithm for state estimation of spatially distributed systems based on the local measurements and quantization of the transmitted data is developed, and its limit opportunities are studied. The numerical and experimental results for various physical systems are described, demonstrating practical applicability of the theoretical statements and high efficiency of the proposed estimation and synchronization schemes.

Molecular communication (MC) is a promising technique to enable the communication among nanomachines for various applications in healthcare industry such as targeted drug delivery. In this paper, we focus on the intersymbol interference (ISI) problem in diffusion-based MC. In this kind of communication, the ISI is notably influenced by communication distance and code width. On this basis, we propose an adaptive code width (ACW) protocol to mitigate the intersymbol interference. In this protocol, a 'distance feedback' is used to measure the communication distance. We adopt a signal attenuation model to accomplish this task. According to the measured distance, the transmitter can adapt the modulation using an appropriate code width in order to mitigate the ISI. Moreover, the ACW protocol improves the transmission efficiency when communication distance is short and ISI does not affect bit error rate. Finally it is verified that this protocol is feasible to control the ISI at a low level even when the channel varies due to the mobility of the transceivers.

In this letter we consider array codes that are used for erasure protection in, e.g., wireless sensor networks. By treating the network as distributed storage with multiple sources, information can be exchanged between the nodes in the network allowing each node to store parity symbols relating to data from other nodes. We show how these array codes can be reconfigured to minimise the probability that some data symbols are not correctly exchanged (and therefore reducing the erasure correcting capability of the array code). We also present a suboptimal method for a class of array codes which significantly reduces the complexity of the reconfiguration while maintaining almost all of the performance.

With rapid increase of image resolution in modern video processing and display systems, the bandwidth and power consumption of external memory are becoming serious bottlenecks. This problem can be alleviated by high-fidelity embedded compression (EC) techniques for video frame buffers. Classic lossless or near-lossless coding methods like CALIC are ill suited for embedded systems due to their high complexity. In this work, a new, simple infra-frame EC technique based on downsampling and side-information aided upsampling is developed. Through a study of a family of downsampling schemes, an optimal one is found and analyzed for EC. This downsampling scheme gives birth to the new EC technique. The main idea is to first split an image into blocks, and then adaptively choose different down sampling patterns and upsampling methods to code/decode these blocks. For a memory bandwidth reduction of 60%, the proposed EC system can achieve PSNR above 40dB, while allowing very simple, low-cost real-time hardware realization. A noteworthy novelty of this work is compression without entropy coding. The resulting code stream is of fixed-rate, supporting random access to pixel blocks.

Lossless compression technique compresses the data file or image file without any changes in the original file. This method is generally applicable for the text data and the medical images. This paper proposes a new methodology to compress online data using an adaptive Huffman tree for encoding and decoding data with lesser height. This technique saves the transmitting power and decreases the communication bandwidth. It also explained the framework of adaptive lossless compression method using block wise data where data is send from sender to receiver dynamically after storing in a medium. Block wise data is a universal lossless data compression technique which takes lesser time to encode and decode.

A turbo code that is based on an 8-state binary constituent code is considered in this paper for use in an adaptive coding and modulation system for a return satellite link. The paper presents the results of finding good puncture-constrained dithered relative prime interleavers along with data puncture patterns to provide the required performance. A trade-off between waterfall and flare performance can be made by selecting the best puncture masks for the required error rate. The performance of the turbo code with a packet size of 1504 data bits is presented for the following modulations: BPSK, QPSK, 8 PSK and 16 APSK. A comparison with other coding strategies shows that this code is an attractive option for use in a return satellite link application using adaptive coding and modulation.

The article presents structural logic schemes of building decision support systems in crisis situations with providing support for video conferencing based on heterogeneous networks. The proposed structural solutions allow implementing them with the use of any data transmission systems of the conditions of implementation of new compression technology based on the presented methods and models of adaptive encoding digital-out the images of preset quality. It is shown that the use of improved compression technology based on the methods for adaptive coding can be definitely implemented on H.32x protocol type platform without additional technical changes or communication equipment replacement and can achieve higher video transmission speed via communication channels.

In recent years, the distinctive advancement of handling huge data promotes the evolution of ubiquitous computing and analysis technologies. With the constantly upward system burden and computational complexity, adaptive coding has been a fascinating topic for pattern analysis, with outstanding performance. In this work, a continuous hashing method, termed continuous random hashing (CRH), is proposed to encode sequential data stream, while ignorance of previously hashing knowledge is possible. Instead, a random selection idea is adopted to adaptively approximate the differential encoding patterns of data stream, e.g., streaming media, and iteration is avoided for stepwise learning. Experimental results demonstrate our method is able to provide outstanding performance, as a benchmark approach to continuous hashing.

In this paper, a new adaptive-rate convolutional coding system for maximizing the throughput over slowly fading channels is presented. The scheme is capable of adapting on the fly to fading conditions without the delay inherent in ARQ-based adaptive-rate strategies. The system employs a bank of encoders, and the current encoder is selected as a function of the channel state information obtained through a periodically transmitted feedback training sequence. This scheme does not require rate compatibility in the code bank, and can therefore make use of the best-known codes of any rates with arbitrary constraint lengths. At the receiver, an innovative decoding method based on the well-known Viterbi algorithm is employed. Knowledge of the encoder choices is not required at the decoder due to its ability to seamlessly track encoder transitions through an expanded Viterbi trellis. The system provides a hassle-free solution to achieving high-rate communications over fading channels.

Reduced adaptability, but no fundamental disruption, of norm-based face-coding mechanisms in cognitively able children and adolescents with autism

Faces are adaptively coded relative to visual norms that are updated by experience. This coding is compromised in autism and the broader autism phenotype, suggesting that atypical adaptive coding of faces may be an endophenotype for autism. Here we investigate the nature of this atypicality, asking whether adaptive face-coding mechanisms are fundamentally altered, or simply less responsive to experience, in autism. We measured adaptive coding, using face identity aftereffects, in cognitively able children and adolescents with autism and neurotypical age- and ability-matched participants. We asked whether these aftereffects increase with adaptor identity strength as in neurotypical populations, or whether they show a different pattern indicating a more fundamental alteration in face-coding mechanisms. As expected, face identity aftereffects were reduced in the autism group, but they nevertheless increased with adaptor strength, like those of our neurotypical participants, consistent with norm-based coding of face identity. Moreover, their aftereffects correlated positively with face recognition ability, consistent with an intact functional role for adaptive coding in face recognition ability. We conclude that adaptive norm-based face-coding mechanisms are basically intact in autism, but are less readily calibrated by experience. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
