In this paper we use a combination of adaptive coding and modulation with Diff-Serv techniques to optimize bandwidth allocation within DVB-S2 satellite links and propose logical grouping of receivers. Especially for scenarios setups where receivers of specific services can be grouped, additional information concerning ab area of influence of this service can be utilized to down- or upgrade modulation scheme and coding rate with minimal impact on QoS.

This paper presents the work conducted as part of doctoral research carried out at ISAE and ONERA on dynamic Radio Resource Management techniques for DVB-RCS systems using Fade Mitigation Techniques at Ka band. For a system using adaptive coding and Modulation at its physical layer the problem of optimally apportioning the satellite carriers' among the many different waveforms, or modes, available becomes crucial to its efficiency. In current DVB-RCS systems the carriers' waveforms are defined during system design. In this work a process to dynamically define carrier waveforms during system operation, based on prevailing traffic and propagation conditions, is proposed whereby the system available capacity, and QoS are shown, via simulations, to improve compared to a static definition.

In this paper, we consider the problem of capacity allocation for fixed broadband (Ka band) satellite networks with a large coverage and correlated atmospheric channel conditions both in time and space. The transmitted bit rate adapts to the channel by varying the coding rate and the constellation. The network is operated by a single service provider. The model of interest is the downlink where the provider allocates capacity to users with quality of service (QoS) guarantees. We first analyze the optimal single-objective optimum allocation by which users' utilities are maximized. We find a closed form for both the proportionally fair and opportunistic allocations. However, these allocations do not show any clear benefit for a profit-seeking service provider because both the efficiency of the network and the user satisfaction with the service cannot be controlled as it mostly depends on the random nature of the correlation properties of the channel. We then propose a Stackelberg game which provides an equilibrium that allows us to prove that 1) the proportionally fair allocation corresponds to a flat-rate pricing model (as used in today's satellite systems) and 2) Pareto improving policies can be obtained by using differential pricing. From the simulation results, we show that the bit rate allocation based on the Stackelberg formulation yields a network efficiency which is in between the one achieved by the proportionally fair and the opportunistic allocations (as expected from the Pareto improvement), with the advantage that now the efficiency is under full control of the system designer. We also show that the higher the differential pricing the higher the network efficiency. As a general conclusion, both the efficiency of the network and the satisfaction of the users improve with our proposed scheme compared to current designs and therefore a differentiated pricing should be a design goal for this type of systems.

In this paper, we investigate the capacity of CSMA (carrier sense multiple access) based wireless multi-hop networks with random topologies described by the hop length distribution. First we develop an analytical model for the effective link capacity as a function of transmit power adaptation policy, physical carrier sense threshold, hop length distribution and medium access probability of p-persistent CSMA. Secondly, we devise an optimal transmit power control scheme that maximizes the network capacity by adjusting the transmit power and the corresponding physical carrier sense threshold. Thereafter, it is extended for the joint optimization of these parameters with the medium access probability of CSMA. Finally we compare the optimal power control scheme with the minimum transmit power policy in. Results show that the proposed power control scheme optimally trades off the spatial reuse (number of interfering links) to the link SIR (signal-to-interference ratio) and achieves an amount of ~%15 increase in network capacity when both schemes employ joint optimization.

In orthogonal frequency division multiple access -code division multiplexing (OFDMA-CDM), rate adaptation is known as one of the key techniques to improve the reliability of the transmission signal. However, since the one subchannel size in OFDMA-CDM depends on the spreading code length, the fading shift which the transmission signal receives per one subchannel might depend on the spreading code length. If the influence of the fading shift can be suppressed according to the multiplexing ratio, the effect of the rate adaptation can be improved. In addition, by allocating the subchannel with multiuser diversity in OFDMA, the effect of the rate adaptation can be more improved. We propose a subchannel allocation scheme based on the maximum, minimum and average signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) code allocation to despread in narrowband according to the multiplexing ratio. We demonstrate that the proposed scheme can improve the bit error rate (BER) performance.

We consider the problem of modelling a randomly time-varying frequency-selective fading channel as a finite-state Markov channel (FSMC). For a fading channel with two correlated taps and given statistical parameters, the accuracy of an FSMC is assessed by comparing its information rate, when the receiver has ideal channel-state information, to that of the original continuous-valued channel. We show that in order to construct an FSMC with a given desired accuracy, fewer states are required if the correlation between taps is taken into account than if the taps are treated as being independent. These results demonstrate the suitability and accuracy of FSMCs for modelling a time-varying frequency-selective fading channel with memory.

An enhanced adaptive scheme based on threshold method with a reduced complexity that combine adaptive modulation and coding with diversity combining is presented for throughput maximization in broadband code division multiple access (CDMA) satellite networks. The proposed algorithm is a modify, enhanced, and more robust version of the existing algorithms for adaptive transmission rate and modulation in CDMA networks. The rate compatible punctured turbo-coded (RCPT), which has been found to give improved throughput performance in a direct sequence (DS) CDMA is exploited. A semi-analytical process and simulations were carried out. It is found that there are significant improvement in the average throughput and the bit-error performance. The proposed algorithm using adaptive coding and modulation (instead of variable spreading gain) outperforms other systems such as Selective Power Control with Active Link Protection (SPC-ALP) algorithm proposed for adaptive transmission rate and power control in CDMA networks.

The effects of adaptive-rate transmissions and routing on the total throughput of a slow-frequency-hop packet-radio network are considered. adaptive rates are achieved through the use of error-control coding with perfect side information. Both fixed-length codes and variable-length codes are considered. Performance results are obtained for direct transmission (i.e., no routing), two-hop limited routing, and full routing. Each link metric is a function of the amount of interference caused by using the link. We compare the total network throughput for each of these schemes with both fixed-rate and adaptive-rate coding.

The Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) networks are terrestrial systems operating at high carrier frequencies (above 20 GHz), therefore one of the most harmful circumstantial factors in these systems is the attenuation caused by precipitation, especially by rain. Employing site diversity is a well-known method to improve the signal to interference plus noise ratio conditions within the BFWA network. The backbone of a BFWA can be wired or wireless terrestrial, however the connection between base stations and the operator's core network can be also established by high frequency satellite links. Applying a satellite backbone system and route diversity between the Earth-space links can compensate precipitation attenuation. In this paper the efficiency of the diversity scheme in a satellite backbone network for BFWA system will be presented.

This paper presents a comprehensive study on a number of hybrid test vector compression methods for VLSI circuit testing. In the proposed approaches, a software program is loaded into the on-chip processor memory along with the compressed test data sets. To minimize on-chip storage besides testing time, the test data volume is first reduced by compaction in a hybrid manner before downloading into the processor. The methods utilize a set of adaptive coding techniques for realizing lossless compression. The compaction program need not be loaded into the embedded processor, as only the decompression of test data is required for the automatic test equipment. The developed schemes necessitate minimal hardware overhead, while the on-chip embedded processor can be reused for normal operation on completion of testing. As an extension of the earlier works, this paper also reports further results on studies of the problem and demonstrates the feasibility of the suggested methodologies with simulation results on ISCAS 85 combinational and ISCAS 89 full scan sequential benchmark circuits.
