Wireless video broadcasting is a complicated problem in which the number of users receiving the service and the average received video quality have to be intelligently optimized. In this paper, we propose a novel, multiple objective optimized cross-layer H.264/AVC video broadcasting scheme for a wireless system that supports a variety of transmission data-rates. The optimal compromise operating point, which includes H.264/AVC and physical layer parameters, between the maximization of the average received video PSNR and the minimization of the service outage probability is found using the multi-objective, cross-layer optimization. Simulations done for the ITU Pedestrian A and Vehicular B channels show that high-data rates with low outages are possible for video broadcasting using a cross-layer design.

Two aspects of DVB-RCS standard can worsen performance of TCP data connections: DAMA access scheme, since it introduces additional and variable delay to the already significant propagation delay and the adoption of adaptive coding on the return link to maximize bandwidth efficiency to face variable weather conditions, because it results in variable bandwidth allocation. Both aspects can severely impact TCP performance, especially for what concerns flow adaptation to varying channel conditions and channel usage efficiency. To optimize performance, in this paper cross-layer signaling among transport, MAC and physical layers of a DVB-RCS system is addressed. In particular MAC-TCP cross-layer is analyzed through the use of NS2 network simulator, showing the possible benefit in a DVB-RCS scenario.

The provision of broadband satellite services depends on the utilisation of efficient and reliable radio interface, which has the ability to adapt to variable propagation channel conditions. In order to use the available spectrum more efficiently and to maximise the link reliability this paper presents the analysis of possible utilisation of LDPC decoder parameters to improve the performance of the DVB-S2 standard adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) procedures. A switching algorithm is proposed for selecting between the adjacent transmission schemes that is assisted by the information on the number of iterations and the number of violated parity checks in previous frames obtained from the iterative LDPC decoder. The simulation results are given in terms of BER curves and the belonging LDPC decoder's average number of iterations and average number of violated parity checks. These results, in particular the LDPC decoder's probability density function of the number of required iterations, are further compared with results obtained with a SNR estimation algorithm proposed in the literature for the use in DVB-S2. The comparison confirms that the LDPC decoder information can be efficiently utilised in ACM procedures.

The 3G mobile communication systems are currently spreading throughout the world and high speed data services on mobile systems such as streaming video, streaming audio and video phone are being widely utilized by the public at large. As higher speed rate services are infiltrated, the provision of wider band wireless systems is expected. MIMO systems, which equip several antennas with both a transmitter and receiver, have recently been attracting much attention. Space-time coding is a technique that exploits transmission diversity and achieves high performance under a fading environment. The space-time block code (STBC) is attracting particular attention for its high performance and decoding simplicity. We propose an adaptive coding scheme using the STBC. It changes the STBC pattern and the modulation symbol according to the receiving condition. In this paper, we discuss this scheme and evaluate its throughput and transmission power performances based on simulation results using ideal propagation environments and measured data in the experiment.

A novel adaptive coding characteristic prediction scheme called RD-cost prediction model is proposed. Through this linear model and optimum bit allocation, RD-cost and texture bits budget of current basic unit can be obtained, and then the quantization parameter (QP) can be directly calculated. Simulation results show that the H.264 encoder, using the proposed algorithm, achieves a visual quality improvement up to 0.302 dB, meets better with target bit rates, produces more flat bit-rate curve and decreases more computation complexity than that using H.264 previous rate control method JVT-G012.

This paper demonstrates how techniques applicable for defining and maintaining a special case of binary search trees (BSTs) can be incorporated into "traditional" compression techniques to yield enhanced superior schemes. We, specifically, demonstrate that the newly introduced data structure, the Fano Binary Search Tree (FBST) can be maintained adaptively and in a self-organizing manner. The correctness and properties of the encoding and decoding procedures that update the FBST are included. We also include the theoretical and empirical analysis, which shows that the number of shift operators is large for small files, and it tends to decrease (asymptotically towards zero) for large files.

The H.264/AVC standard substantially improved its coding efficiency and subjective quality by using the intra prediction technique and the adaptive coding between inter and intra modes based on rate-distortion optimization. This encoding scheme, however, increases encoding complexity dramatically and causes troubles in its practical applications in the real-time mobile environment. In order to decrease the complexity, various methods are proposed but most of them take only its current block into consideration for selecting candidate intra modes, which naturally causes degradation in PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) and bitrate. The proposed fast intra mode decision finds the candidate modes by analyzing transformed coefficients of neighboring blocks as well. We verify this proposed scheme reduces encoding complexity without noticeable degradation of PSNR and bitrate.

The rapidly increasing importance of wireless communications (including satellite) together with the rapid growth of high speed networks pose new challenges to TCP. To overcome them, a wide variety of TCP enhancements has been presented in literature. However, because most proposals aim to address different impairments, the choice of "the best" TCP enhancement becomes arduous, given the increasing level of heterogeneity of present and future networks. The TCP adaptive- selection concept, introduced by the authors in this paper, aims at providing an alternative approach, by challenging the idea that only one TCP enhancement must be adopted. In fact, by extending the concept that underlies ACM (adaptive coding and Modulation) to Transport layer, it envisages concurrent adoption of different TCP versions on the same server, the better to match the different impairments present on different connections. Preliminary results obtained by considering a simple application example are encouraging, and justify the following remarks on feasibility and the discussion of some implementation proposals.

Block matching has been used for motion estimation and motion compensation in MPEG standards for years. While it has an acceptable performance in describing motion between frames, it requires quite a few bits to represent the motion vectors. In certain circumstances, the use of whole frame affine motion models would perform equally well or even better than block matching in terms of motion accuracy, while it results in the coding of only 6 parameters. In this paper, we modify an MPEG-4 codec by adding: (1) 6 affine model parameters to the frame header; and (2) mode selection among INTRA, SKIP, INTER-16/spl times/16, INTER-8/spl times/8, and GLOBAL-AFFINE modes by Lagrange optimal rate-distortion criteria. Simulation results demonstrate 10-20% decrease in bit-rate, compared to the MMS codec for an average coded P-frame with the same reconstruction PSNR.

This paper suggests a scheme of adaptive coding and prediction for a case where a source generates letters from an alphabet with unknown (and even infinite) size. This scheme can be applied along with any predictor; here we use the Laplace predictor as the main example. We consider a case of prediction for i.i.d. sources, but all results can be easily extended to Markov sources. The suggested scheme is described using the tree notation.
