Image compression algorithms based on the discrete wavelet transform are nowadays very popular for their power and other properties. However, classical decomposition of the image with one static mother wavelet is generally far from optimal. This paper introduces a lossless still image compression method based on spatially adaptive wavelet transform, where the mother wavelet is varying along the signal to achieve better energy conservation. The decision-making process, which is responsible for mother wavelet selection, works in dependence on local pixel values and internal statistics. New mother wavelet is determined for every coded pixel (deccorelation step). The preliminary results of this method on several images of different types show, that the compression ratio of proposed method is comparable to the JPEG2000 algorithm with static 5/3 wavelet filter. Our intention is to apply this new adaptive method to the compression of astronomical images and optimize carefully the decision-making process according to this type of images. Since these images have very specific properties, we expect that our method will overcome JPEG2000 and also recent compression algorithms used in astronomy (HCompress, PMT or FITPRESS).

In this paper, a method for lossless and near lossless compression of large digital mammograms is proposed. This method is based on a predictive coder that uses integer-to-integer operations, and generates a two-layer embedded bit stream (i.e. near-lossless and refinement layer). The maximum tolerated pixel distortion is guaranteed in the near lossless component. Comparisons with other proposed approaches are based on a database of high-resolution 12 bits/pixel digital mammograms. The simulation results indicate that our lossless compression method can offer average bit rates 39, 5%, 24%, 7% and 2, 5% better than PNG, JPEG 2000, JPEG-lossless, and LOCO, respectively. Besides, for the same images, the proposed method offers near lossless compression at relatively low computational cost, providing an average bit rate of 2, 57 bits/pixel and PSNR of 47,77dB.

Network protocols in layered architectures have historically been obtained on an ad-hoc basis, and much of the recent cross-layer designs are conducted through piecemeal approaches. Network protocols may instead be holistically analyzed and systematically designed as distributed solutions to some global optimization problems in the form of generalized Network Utility Maximization (NUM), providing insight on what they optimize and on the structures of network protocol stacks. In the form of 10 Questions and Answers, this paper presents a short survey of the recent efforts towards a systematic understanding of "layering" as "optimization decomposition". The overall communication network is modeled by a generalized NUM problem, each layer corresponds to a decomposed subproblem, and the interfaces among layers are quantified as functions of the optimization variables coordinating the subproblems. Furthermore, there are many alternative decompositions, each leading to a different layering architecture. Industry adoption of this unifying framework has also started. Here we summarize the current status of horizontal decomposition into distributed computation and vertical decomposition into functional modules such as congestion control, routing, scheduling, random access, power control, and coding. We also discuss under-explored future research directions in this area. More importantly than proposing any particular cross-layer design, this framework is working towards a mathematical foundation of network architectures and the design process of modularization.

This paper extends our previous work on hyperspectral imagery compression based on distributed source coding (DSC). We apply DSC principles to facilitate efficient parallel encoder implementations with moderate memory requirement. Based on our previously proposed wavelet-based DSC framework, we propose a novel adaptive coding scheme that judiciously combines DSC and intra coding tools, taking into account the source statistics and inter-band correlation, as well as the coding gains and limitations imposed by tools. Bits extracted from wavelet coefficients tend to have different statistics and inter-band correlation at different significance levels and in different wavelet subbands. Therefore, it is non-trivial to determine the optimal coding strategy. Toward this we propose modeling techniques to estimate the performance of DSC/intra coding under different bits extraction scenarios. This model is used to define adaptive coding strategies that can optimally incorporate different bit- extraction techniques with DSC/intra coding tools according to the bit significance levels and wavelet subbands. Experimental results demonstrate that adaptive coding can achieve up to 4dB improvement over a non-adaptive system, and the improved DSC-based system is comparable to some 3D wavelet system in terms of coding performance. While we focus on hyperspectral images in this paper, many of the proposed techniques are applicable to other wavelet- based DSC image and video applications.

The exploitation of adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) techniques for the forward link (satellite-to-user) of broadband communication satellites operating at Ka-band and above has been shown to theoretically provide large system capacity gains. In this article, the problem of how to accurately estimate the time variant channel and to adapt the physical layer mitigating the effects of estimator errors and propagation delays is analyzed. A comprehensive system simulator is then developed to assess the performance of the proposed solution and the impact on outage probability and system capacity due to estimation errors.

Multiple description codes are designed for multiple path video streaming with channel diversities. In this paper, we investigate the performance of multi-path video streaming using a multiple description coding (MDC) technique. An efficient MDC technique based on spatial domain processing is applied. The impacts of several codec variables, such as different numbers of MDC sub-streams, different lengths of the group of pictures (GOP), and aligned and unaligned I-frames for MDC sub-streams, are further discussed in this paper. The performance of the system is evaluated by the frame dropout rate, which indicates the probability of playing back frozen frames of the reconstructed video at the receiver devices. To address dynamic channel conditions for video transmissions, we propose an adaptive coding technique by adjusting the GOP lengths according to the channel condition. Different approaches, such as sub-dividing GOPs for a single stream and multiple sub-streams, and an adaptive MDC video streaming system, are examined in this paper

In this paper, we analyze the IEEE 802.16 OFDMA system with the frequency diversity frame structure. We perform adaptive coding and modulation, allocation of the time-frequency resource and transmit power to the downlink and uplink service flows, which are scheduled for transmission in the current frame. Also, we consider adaptation of the frame boundary between the downlink and uplink subframes. We minimize the sum time-frequency resource, allocated in both downlink and uplink subframes, under the constraints on the maximum transmit power and the time-frequency resource, available in the frame, while satisfying the QoS requirements for all downlink and uplink service flows, scheduled for transmission. We propose the cross-layer optimization algorithms, which take into account the MAC and PHY layers processing during the optimization

This tutorial focuses on the design of an interactive multibeam broadband satellite (MBS) system with QoS support. A DVB-S2/RCS transparent architecture and fixed terminals using adaptive physical layer will be considered. DVB-S2 transmission power and symbol rate are assumed to be constant, and hence ACM (adaptive coding and modulation) yields a bit rate that is time and space dependant according to the channel conditions. DVB-RCS transmission power is assumed to be constant and DRA (dynamic rate adaptation) along with AC (adaptive coding) yield both bit and symbol rate time and space dependant. During the tutorial, a number of cross-layer mechanisms will be introduced whereby the physical, the medium access control (MAC) and the IP layers share knowledge of the channel dynamics in presence of ACM. The cross-layer design approach allows further improvements on packet data admission, scheduling and policing to maximize both capacity and user satisfaction while meeting QoS constraints

In this paper, we analyze the IEEE 802.16 OFDMA system with adaptive allocation of the frequency subchannels to the users. We perform adaptive coding and modulation, allocation of the time-frequency resource, the transmit power, and the frequency subchannels to the downlink and uplink service flows, which are scheduled for transmission in the current frame. Moreover, we consider adaptation of the frame boundary between the downlink and uplink subframes. We minimize the sum time-frequency resource, allocated in both downlink and uplink subframes, under the constraints on the maximum transmit power and the time-frequency resource available in the frame, while satisfying the QoS requirements for all downlink and uplink service flows scheduled for transmission. We propose the cross-layer optimization algorithms, which take into account the MAC and PHY layers processing during the optimization. We also present the results of the proposed algorithms evaluation by system level simulation.

A new software-based hybrid test vector compression method for testing system-on-a-chip (SOC) using an embedded processor is presented in this paper. In the proposed approach, a software program is first loaded into the on-chip processor memory core together with the compressed test data set. In order to reduce on-chip storage as well as testing time, the large volume of test data input is compressed in a hybrid fashion before being downloaded into the processor. The method combines a set of adaptive coding techniques for the required test data compression. The compression program, however, need not be loaded into the embedded processor, since only the decompression of test data is necessary for application by the automatic test equipment (ATE). Most importantly, this software-based hybrid scheme requires minimal hardware overhead, while the on-chip embedded processor core can be reused for normal operation after the testing is completed. In the paper, only the compression part of the technique is presented, and the efficiency of the suggested hybrid approach is demonstrated through simulation experiments on ISCAS 85 combinational and ISCAS 89 full-scan sequential benchmark circuits
