Summary form only given. We adapted well-known algorithms of adaptive Huffman coding and LZW to use syllables and words instead of characters for text compression. We tested the algorithms on collections of small or middle-sized files. Using syllable-based compression algorithms on English documents gives expected results: they outperform character-based and are outperformed by word-based versions of the same algorithm. According our tests both syllable- and word-based compression methods are sensitive to initial setting of their dictionaries. The decomposition of words into syllables is not trivial and is language dependent. An open issue is the applicability of syllable-based compression for different languages (like German, Rusian, or Hungarian) and its use in conjunction with other algorithms like block-sorting lossless compression

A family of linear binary block codes is constructed from ordinary block repetition codes using cyclic shifts of the input information vector which greatly simplifies encoding. These codes have variable block length and variable minimum Hamming distance. Several sets of cyclic shifts are defined to constrain the search for good codes. Codeword enumeration strategies are discussed. The proposed codes are shown to be good candidates for adaptive coding, turbo product coding, retransmission schemes and multihop routing, and block differential encoding. A generic parallel encoder structure well suited to OFDM systems, and a non-recursive block differential encoder capable of arbitrarily increasing the code rate with the block length, for given minimum Hamming distance, are proposed. Numerical examples compare the bit-error rate assuming iterative soft- decision decoding and the union bound.

Systems with an adaptive physical layer make use of the channel conditions information in order to adapt their transmission to the channel with adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) techniques. These systems present a challenge in providing quality-of-service since the capacity is not constant. Previous work has covered capacity allocation solutions that provide service guarantees and fairness in terms of bandwidth allocation. In this paper, we present active queue management techniques that provide delay guarantees. We analyse the adaptive RED algorithm and present the required changes for implementing RED over an adaptive physical layer system. We show through simulations that there is an optimal operating point in the trade-off between packet marking and maximum queuing delay.

This paper deals with the design, evaluation and performance comparison of smart framing strategies that complement the packet scheduler in DVB-S2 systems with adaptive coding and modulation. Provided that user data packets are transmitted grouped in frames, each of them using a modulation and coding setting (ModCod), the inherent spectral efficiency of the selected ModCod can be cancelled by a poor framing efficiency, i.e. transmitting frames with large padding component. For this reason, smart framing strategies are proposed in this paper, which optimize the framing efficiency.

The TCP efficiency degradation in high delay- bandwidth product and error-prone channels is a well-known problem. To reduce this degradation, we utilized a hybrid wireless network architecture, where a geostationary bent-pipe satellite channel is used for forward high bit-rate transmissions, while the return link is realized through a terrestrial 3G segment. The performance of four of the most popular TCP versions are tested and compared via simulations in terms of goodput. Our aim is choosing which version performs better by using an adaptive coding and Modulation (ACM) technique, both alone and together with an Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) scheme of the Selective Repeat (SR) type. ARQ is used with and without transmit and receive timeouts. The obtained results show that such a hybrid architecture is advantageous for TCP transmissions in terms of average goodput, and that ACM is effective only if used together with ARQ schemes.

The channel state of a satellite RF link is best provided as the Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) estimate of the received signal. This form of channel state is utilised by satellite capacity optimization techniques like adaptive coding and Modulation (ACM), which comes under the hood of Fade Mitigation Techniques (FMT). The performance of the SNR estimation algorithm, used as the channel state estimator, directly impacts the efficiency of the FMT. In this paper we analyse the contemporary SNR estimation algorithms considering only the rain attenuation as the fading process. Their performances are quantified in terms of the number of received symbols needed to obtain an estimate with a given error margin. Their suitability as a channel state estimator for a typical DVB type satellite system is analysed by considering the various assumptions involved in the algorithm, the effect of noise due to interference as encountered in such systems on the estimation algorithm.

We consider the IEEE 802.16 OFDMA system with the frequency diversity frame structure. We perform adaptive coding and modulation, allocation of the time-frequency resource and transmit power to the downlink and uplink service flows, scheduled for transmission in the current frame. We also adapt the position of the frame boundary between the uplink and downlink subframes. We propose three heuristic algorithms that minimize the total power transmitted in both downlink and uplink subframes subject to the maximum transmission power constraints and the available time-frequency resource constraint, while satisfying the QoS requirements for all downlink and uplink service flows scheduled for transmission. Our algorithms take into account the MAC and PHY layers processing in case of ARQ. We evaluate the proposed heuristic algorithms by the system level simulation of the IEEE 802.16 network.

The goodput of long-lived TCP connections can be maximized in error-prone channels by trading bandwidth for Bit Error Rate (BER). This fact can be exploited in the bandwidth and transmission parameters' assignment, by means of adaptive coding and Modulation (ACM), in satellite systems; in such a case, multiple source- destination (SD) pairs actually "see" channels with diverse characteristics, owing to unequal weather conditions. However, when dealing with multiple SD assignments, both aspects of goodput-maximization and fairness must be dealt with. Improving the effectiveness of TCP may be relatively easy, but maintaining the effectiveness while maintaining the fairness is a challenge. The paper numerically analyzes the fairness behavior of two bandwidth allocation methods to TCP connections, experiencing diverse fading conditions.

Transmission efficiency, defined as the ratio of successfully transmitted information bits to overall bits transmitted, can be used for evaluating the transmission performance of wireless links. As a function of received signal to noise ratio (SNR), transmission efficiency is determined by physical layer technologies, such as channel coding, interleaving, modulation and other error-recovery techniques of wireless links. In this paper we first analyze the form of transmission efficiency function in wireless links, then based on that we propose an adaptive coding scheme that maximizes the transmission efficiency according to wireless channel conditions (received SNR). Simulation results show that with the proposed adaptive coding, transmission efficiency of wireless links can be significantly enhanced.
