Arithmetic coding completely bypasses the traditional coding paradigm that replaces an input symbol by a specific code. Arithmetic coding represents a stream of input symbols by a single codeword. The modelling paradigm is a key aspect in effective data compression. In this paper we present an adaptive higher order Arithmetic coding scheme using the Prediction by Partial Match (PPM) algorithm as well as a framework for the comparison of the different compression techniques. Simulation study conducted with this framework shows that compressive effectiveness and implementing complexity increases as the order increases but above a certain order there is no gain in compression with increasing costs.

The paper proposes a new data structure called macroblock group (MBG). The MBG structure unifies the progressive and interlaced date into one general data format, thus enables a unifying process framework to conduct the progressive and interlaced video coding. Upon the new data structure, an adaptive MBG coding (A-MBG) method undertakes two-stage coding process, and it can well use the calculated and estimated encoding cost to select the best one among the MBG types, thus can finely adapt to the local contents of the pictures. The experiments are taken in comparison with the newly finalized H.264 standard. A-MBG shows an outperforming result to that of MBAFF in coding efficiency. In addition, because of using the same structure for both progressive and interlaced video, the structure complexity of A-MBG would be lower than that of MBAFF.

Data hiding method called steganography has bee studied. Steganography is a method to transmit noticeable data secretly by mixing them in carefree image data. In the steganography, an image is used only as the cloak to transmit noticeable information. In this summary, we propose a method to incorporate data hiding into an adaptive lossless coding method. An adaptive coding method is effective for data compression because image signals are usually not stationary. For example, it is possible to get better coding performance by dividing an image into some blocks and by using suitable coding parameter for each block. There are two types of adaptive coding schemes, one is the method to transmit suitable coding parameters, block by block, as an overhead information, and another is the method to estimate and use parameters from already transmitted data, so that the latter does not need to transmit the coding parameters. We propose the method for data hiding in the former adaptive coding method, i.e. adaptive method with overhead information. In our proposed method, coding parameters are controlled by the embedding data and the original image data are never changed.

In order to increase the compression ratio of color video sequence, a new adaptive coding method based on four-dimensional matrix theories is proposed in this paper. A four-dimensional matrix model is adopted to describe the color video sequence. 4D-MDCT (four-dimensional matrix DCT) is used to decrease the correlation of intra frames and inter frames. Then, the coefficients are quantized by quantization matrix. To get rid of the correlation between the coefficients further, prediction and compensation are applied to the quantized coefficients. At the same time, the original quantized coefficients of the submatrix are coded too. Select the coding method, which consumes fewer bits, as the final method for each submatrix adaptively. Experimental results show that high compression ratio can be achieved and the high PSNR preserved.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) have more severe operating conditions than traditional wireless networks. The MAC protocol of IEEE 802.11 mitigates collisions and ensures error-free packet transmissions at the cost of limiting capacity and increasing latency. For voice transmission over MANETs this cost should be minimized. We propose and examine selective error checking (SEC) at the MAC layer of 802.11 that takes advantage of the fact that many of the speech bits can tolerate errors while other bits must be protected for effective reconstruction of the speech. Simulation results demonstrate that the network performance and the speech quality are substantially improved by modifying the MAC layer with SEC to suit particular GSM speech compression standard, the Narrow-Band adaptive MultiRate (NB-AMR) coder operating at a rate of 7.95 kbps.(1)

In this paper, we propose a greedy technique for adaptive Fano coding, which is suitable for a wide range of applications, specially those in which memory constraints are tight. Our scheme has great potential in maximizing the output entropy, and thus has also indirect cryptographic implications. This paper includes the encoding and decoding algorithms, and the partitioning procedures suitable for the binary and r-ary schemes. It also includes a rigorous analysis of the properties of the algorithm. Empirical results demonstrate that our adaptive Fano scheme compresses marginally less than the adaptive Huffman scheme. In terms of speed, the former is faster in the compression phase and slower in the decompression phase. We also present the extension of the binary adaptive Fano coding method to multi-symbol code alphabets. We introduce the corresponding partitioning procedure, which deals with consecutive partitionings that satisfy the principles of Fano coding. To find the optimal partitioning, we propose a brute force algorithm that searches the entire space of all possible partitionings in O(m/sup r-1/) time. As opposed to this, we propose a greedy linear-time algorithm that finds a sub-optimal but accurate consecutive partitioning.

DVB-S2 is a specification for next-generation digital broadband satellite systems emerging from technical ad-hoc DVB working groups. In particular, this paper focuses on the interactive scenario (for which adaptive coding and modulation is normative) aiming at analyzing the DVB-S2 encapsulation and framing process and computing its efficiency. After describing the adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) subsystem of the DVB-S2, a layered model is presented as well as its mapping to a layered encapsulation model. The numerical results show that for the system to be efficient, the encapsulation process must multiplex users requiring the same physical layer. Moreover, the impact of additional MPEG/MPE encapsulation on the overall efficiency is analyzed.

We propose a new technique to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over the flat-fading channel. This is a non-data-aided, envelope-based estimator that can be applied to non-constant modulus constellations which is a feature not found in the existing approaches. We also analyze the performance of our estimators for both PSK and non-PSK constellations by deriving their asymptotic variances and comparing it with the Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs). Moreover, we discuss how the SNR estimates can be used to approximate the bit error rate (BER) and how the accuracy of the SNR estimate is related to that of the BER estimate, which justifies the necessity for the accurate estimation of SNR. The analytical performance is shown for both PSK and non-PSK constellations, such as 8 QAM. and 16 QAM. Monte Carlo simulation results corroborate our analysis.
