This paper describes an efficient one dimensional wavelet adaptive coding algorithm for the compression of audio signals. The new algorithm has the property that the most appropriate wavelet filter is selected from a library of wavelet filters according to a proposed switching criterion. This algorithm yields a system that can adapt to the time variance of a signal. Simulation results are demonstrated for several audio signals to show the superior performance of the new method.

With the development of hardware and large capacity communication facilities, video has been more and more widely used in every field. Delivering video over the Internet has posted a big problem. Video files are extremely big and need hours or even tens of hours to download. Much research has been attempted over low-level structures such as coding, buffer, protocol, agent and server. These techniques are either not scalable or impractical. This paper presents a system designed to allow efficient retrieving, browsing and real-time playing of videos through the Internet using a web browser. Testing results on resource usage and system usability are presented.

To increase the link layer throughput, 802.16 Working Group defines the application of adaptive modulation in Broadband Wireless Access System (BWA). On the other hand.. the transport layer performance can be specified, for example, by Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) throughput. In this paper we analyse the link layer throughput by using adaptive modulation, as well as the TCP performance. Furthermore, the joint consideration of the data link layer and transport layer performance over a BWA network is discussed. The simulation results showed that the adaptive modulation in link layer could improve the TCP throughputs. In addition, criteria for the modulation selection considering both transport layer and link layer is given.

A generalized adaptive code acquisition scheme is proposed by using a multi-layer structure. The backpropagation network (BPN) is used in modeling the multilayer system. The timing offset of the received code can be detected by combining the hidden layer weights after an adaptation period. The characteristics of mean squared error (MSE) and weight distribution for the generalized system are analyzed, and the effects of input and hidden nodes are investigated. The generalized system provides a high detection probability and flexibility in acquisition system design.

We investigate physical layer opportunities resulting from multimedia streams which use progressive coding. With such progressively encoded video frames the location of the first bit error is more important than the overall bit error probability. This makes the expected error free length a reasonable metric for performance optimization. One physical layer opportunity is the adjustment of bit energy within data frames. For wireless links nonuniform bit-energy distributions result in a flexible solution that may be used in conjunction with channel coding. We identify system gains to be achieved with nonuniform bit energy distribution optimizations and also show that a simplified frame truncation technique may be used without significant loss of quality.

This paper suggests a new adaptive length FEC algorithm to satisfy various line rates for metropolitan 32 ch × 10 Gb/s DWDM systems. The ETSI-BRAN-HIPERACCESS standard is confined to specify the radio subsystem above 11 GHz of a point-to-multi-point (PMP) interoperable system consisting of the physical (PHY) layer and the data link control (DLC)/convergence layer (CL) - which are both core network independent. The paper gives a description of the physical layer, which specifies the transmission scheme in order to allow interoperability between equipment developed by different manufacturers. This is achieved by standardizing all baseband signal processing structures in the transmitter side by using the most technology advanced architecture and components. The system, by employing adaptive coding and modulation (i.e. individual link adaptation) and cell sectorization techniques, offers a high spectral efficiency and a great flexibility for the deployment. Furthermore, the specification includes basic RF aspects and those other parameters necessary for radio regulatory purposes.
