Code design for adaptive coding and modulation indicator in broadcast systems

In this paper, we address the coding problem for adaptive coding and modulator indicators in communication systems where users are divided into several classes according to their channel quality. Two novel methods are described to construct codebooks with variable length codewords forsuch an application. The proposed constructions satisfy all constraints of the system model, showing considerable gain in both the maximal and average length of codebook with respect to the current state of the art. The methodology includes a systematic way for constructing variable length codebooks where codewords are not uniformly distributed in the space, and thus, some codewords are more protected than others. The proposed construction can be easily adapted, by zero padding, to obtain a fixed block-length code, with length equal to the maximal length of the designed variable-length code but still smaller than that of the best state-of-the-art code. Performance of the adaptive coding and modulation(ACM) strongly depends on the retrieved Channel State Information(CSI),which can be obtained using the channel estimation techniques relying on pilot symbol *** analysis of methods of pilot-aided channel estimation for ACM systems were relatively *** this paper,we investigate the performance of CSI prediction using the Minimum Mean Square Error(MMSE)channel estimator for an ACM *** solve the two problems of MMSE:high computational operations and oversimplified assumption,we then propose the Low-Complexity schemes(LC-MMSE and Recursion LC-MMSE(R-LC-MMSE)).Computational complexity and Mean Square Error(MSE) are presented to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed *** analysis and numerical results show that LC-MMSE performs close to the wellknown MMSE estimator with much lower complexity and R-LC-MMSE improves the application of MMSE estimation to specific circumstances.

adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) schemes are very useful in satellite communication systems because they provide variable coding rates and modulation levels that can be used under different channel gain conditions. The effectiveness of the ACM scheme depends on the accuracy of the channel estimates. Because channel estimation plays a key role in ACM schemes, we present an estimation technique for the channel SNR. Furthermore, because channel SNR estimates are unreliable, we modify the ACM scheme to incorporate channel estimation errors. It is shown that this scheme significantly improves the performance of the ACM scheme.

We consider the problem of estimating time-varying quantum noise. Specifically, we focus on Pauli qubit noise with time-variations and attempt to construct the most accurate instantaneous channel description. To this end, we propose an adaptive framework of simultaneous communication and parameter estimation (SCAPE) that efficiently and accurately estimates the time-varying Pauli channel while communicating reliably over the channel being estimated. This adaptive framework gives the informed control of communication rate-parameter estimation tradeoff to communicating parties. Interestingly, this adaptive SCAPE requires post-processing entirely on the receiver's end and minimal feedback to the sender to increase, decrease, or continue with the same code rate of employed error correcting code. This procedure can be particularly useful in time-varying quantum channels with natural periodic deviations in channel conditions, e.g., in satellite communication channels.

Multiple-Objective Packet Routing Optimization for Aeronautical Ad-Hoc Networks

Providing Internet service above the clouds is of ever-increasing interest and in this context aeronautical ad-hoc networking (AANET) constitutes a promising solution. However, the optimization of packet routing in large ad hoc networks is quite challenging. In this article, we develop a discrete $\epsilon$ multi-objective genetic algorithm ($\epsilon$-DMOGA) for jointly optimizing the end-to-end latency, the end-to-end spectral efficiency (SE), and the path expiration time (PET) that specifies how long the routing path can be relied on without re-optimizing the path. More specifically, a distance-based adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) scheme specifically designed for aeronautical communications is exploited for quantifying each link's achievable SE. Furthermore, the queueing delay at each node is also incorporated into the multiple-objective optimization metric. Our $\epsilon$-DMOGA assisted multiple-objective routing optimization is validated by real historical flight data collected over the Australian airspace on two selected representative dates.

This article looks at the techno-economic perspectives of the use of DVB-S2 (Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite - Second Generation) and its unique feature, adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) in the provision of satellite triple play. For this study, current market economic data were used, in conjunction with technical results derived within the European Union-funded IST IMOSAN project. IMOSAN (Integrated Multi-Layer Optimisation in DVB-S2 Satellite Networks) succeeded in realising the provision of satellite triple play over an interactive DVB-S2/DVB-RCS (Return Channel via Satellite) platform. The ACM feature of DVB-S2 was exploited, yielding increased spectrum efficiency and thus decreasing service cost. One-user-per-terminal scenarios are examined, as well as terrestrial redistribution of satellite services to a group of users via WiMAX. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Signal-to-noise ratio estimation algorithm for adaptive coding and modulation in advanced digital video broadcasting-radar cross section satellite systems

This paper presents a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation algorithm for advanced digital video broadcasting-return channel via satellite (DVB-RCS) systems using adaptive coding and modulation (ACM). Due to the absence of a repetitive pilot symbol structure, SNR estimation has to be performed using the fixed symbol preamble data. Moreover, sporadic nature of data traffic on the return link causes variation in interference level from slot to slot and, therefore, the estimation has to be done within one traffic slot duration. Hence, it becomes necessary to use a combination of data-aided and decision-directed (DD) algorithms so as to make use of traffic data. A non-data-aided estimator that was previously proposed by the authors for binary and quadrature phase shift keying schemes is extended to 8-PSK in a decision directed manner. The inherent bias of DD approach at low values of SNR is reduced by using a hybrid approach, that is, using the proposed estimator at moderate/high values of SNR and the moments-based estimator (M2M4) at low values of SNR. Overall improved performance of the proposed hybrid estimator, in terms of accuracy and complexity, makes it an attractive choice for implementing ACM in advanced DVB-RCS systems.

This paper compares classical algorithms for adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) with an approach based on artificial intelligence (AI). The proposed approach utilizes an online random regression forest (ORRF) to predict time series of signal to noise ratio (SNR) values aiding the ACM switching decisions. The evaluation of the ACM algorithms is based on two years of Q/V-band channel data recorded at the ground station in Graz using the Alphasat experimental Q/V-band payload. The results indicate that the ORRF based approach could outperform the classical approaches in terms of spectral efficiency, and parameterization of the ORRF is simpler and needs less knowledge of the channel properties as the discussed classical ACM approaches.

Since the 1970s, satellite communications have been continuously evolving and improving to provide services characterized by increasing complexity and quality. This evolution has been supported by the constant increase in the operating frequency for achieving the necessary high data rates. This contribution focuses on the long-term key role of the Italian Space Agency in supporting research activities on (and the developments of) high-frequency satellite communication systems. The Alphasat experiment is the most recent effort of the Italian Space Agency, in collaboration with the European Space Agency, to thoroughly investigate the severe detrimental atmospheric effects impairing radio waves at high frequency (specifically, Ka and Q bands) and the associated fade mitigation techniques (eg, uplink power control, site diversity, and adaptive coding and modulation) required to achieve the typical target quality and availability of modern satellite communication systems. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper deals with the problem of precoding, scheduling, and link adaptation in next generation mobile interactive multibeam satellite systems. In contrast to the fixed satellite services, when the user terminals move across the coverage area, additional challenges appear. Due to the time varying channel, the gateway has only access to a delayed version of the channel state information (CSI), which can eventually limit the overall system performance. However, in contrast to general multiuser multiple-input multiple-output terrestrial systems, the CSI degradation in multibeam mobile applications has a very limited impact for typical fading channel and system assumptions. Under realistic conditions, the numerical results show that precoding can offer an attractive gain in the system throughput compared with the conservative frequency reuse allocations.
