The use of dual polarization in mobile satellite systems is very promising as a means for increasing the transmission capacity. In this paper a system which uses simultaneously two orthogonal polarizations in order to communicate with the users is studied. The application of MIMO signal processing techniques along with adaptive coding and modulation in the forward link can provide remarkable throughput gains up to 100% when compared with the single polarization system. The gateway is allowed to vary the MIMO and modulation and coding Schemes for each frame. The selection is done by means of a link adaptation algorithm which uses a tunable margin to achieve a predefined target Frame Error Rate.

adaptive detection method of FTN signalling at constant Nyquist sampling rate

Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signalling, as a candidate technology of fifth generation, can transmit more data with the same bandwidth. In the adaptive transmission system based on FTN signalling (FNS), the transmitter changes the packing ratios to adapt to the wireless channels. The scheme that combines the adaptive coding and modulation with the FNS has higher spectral efficiency. However, the symbol rate changing with the packing ratio challenges the receiver of adaptive transmission system based on FNS. Moreover, the decoding complexity based on viterbi algorithm (VA) is increasing exponentially when the packing ratios of FNS decrease. In this study, the authors proposed an adaptive detection method to detect FTN signal at constant sampling rate. The proposed method adopted an linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) equaliser to solve the mismatch of the symbol rate and the sampling rate. Their simulation results show that the adaptive detection method of FNS can approach the optimal bit error rate performance of the coded FTN system. At the same time, the proposed method can avoid the complexity induced by the variable sampling rate in the adaptive transmission system based on FNS.

Throughput Enhancement for SATCOM Systems Using Dynamic Spectrum Controlled Channel Allocation under Variable Propagation Conditions

This paper proposes a dynamic spectrum controlled (DSTC) channel allocation algorithm to increase the total throughput of satellite communication (SATCOM) systems. To effectively use satellite resources such as the satellite's maximum transponder bandwidth and maximum transmission power and to handle the propagation gain variation at all earth stations, the DSTC algorithm uses two new transmission techniques: spectrum compression and spectrum division. The algorithm controls various transmission parameters, such as the spectrum compression ratio, number of spectrum divisions, combination of modulation method and FEC coding rate (MODCOD), transmission power, and spectrum bandwidth to ensure a constant transmission bit rate under variable propagation conditions. Simulation results show that the DSTC algorithm achieves up to 1.6 times higher throughput than a simple MODCOD-based algorithm.

Optimising DVB-S2 spectral efficiency with hierarchical modulation for broadband applications

We study the design of a digital video broadcasting - satellite - second generation broadband system in order to maximise spectral efficiency. This task is usually challenging because of channel variability. The solution adopted in modern satellite communications systems relies mainly on a time-sharing strategy. Recently, we demonstrated the advantage of combining time sharing with hierarchical modulation to increase the transmission rate of such systems. However, the optimal spectral efficiency remained an open question. In this paper, we show that the optimal transmission rate is the solution of a linear programming problem. We study the performance of the optimal scheme for interactive satellite services in the context of a digital video broadcasting - satellite - second generation system. This paper presents the detailed design and the key system performance results of a comprehensive laboratory demonstrator for it broadband Ka-band multi-beam satellite system exploiting the new DVB-S2 standard with adaptive coding and modulation (ACM). This complete demonstrator allows ill-depth verification and optimization of the ACM techniques applied to large satellite broadband networks, as well as complementing and confirming the more theoretical or simulation-based findings published so far. It is demonstrated that few ACM configurations (in terms of modulation and coding) are able to efficiently cope with a typical Ka-band multi-beam satellite system with negligible capacity loss. It is also demonstrated that the exploitation of ACM thresholds with hysteresis represents the most reliable way to adapt the physical layer configuration to the spatial and time variability of the channel conditions while avoiding too many physical layer configuration changes. Simple ACM adaptation techniques, readily implementable over large-scale networks, are shown to perform very well, fulfilling the target packet-error rate requirements even in the presence of deep fading conditions. The impact of carrier phase noise and satellite nonlinearity has also been measured. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Existing works on adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) assume the availability of accurate channel state information at the satellite transmitter. However, due to the time-varying channel fading and the huge round-trip delay in the mobile satellite systems, the application of the adaptive method is greatly limited. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents an ACM scheme based on the partial channel information of mobile satellite link and derives an optimized adaptive strategy and power allocation method, where the transmitter adaptively chooses modulation and coding mode based on the line-of-sight channel information of the reverse link and the channel statistical information of the forward link This method overcomes the limitation of the conventional ACM schemes and the simulation results also show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The last decade has been characterized by an increasing demand of higher throughput and more reliable communication links for supporting multimedia applications. To this aim, the focus has been toward both broadband and broadcast solutions providing multimedia services to mobile users. In order to exploit such advanced services, ubiquitous and efficient mobile connections are required: satellite communications (SatCom), able to cover low density populated areas and to fill terrestrial coverage gaps, are a viable solution, as long as capacity is properly optimized. Waveform adaptation can be considered as one of the reference approaches for increasing the throughput and the reliability in wireless communication links. However, the large round trip time and user mobility in SatCom scenarios represent a serious challenge that limits the effectiveness of transmission parameters adaptation. In this paper, we focus on a novel state-driven adaptive coding and modulation approach aiming to predict the most suitable modulation and coding scheme for each communication state, based on channel state estimation and a Markov propagation model. The paper introduces the concept of state estimation decision reliability and transmission reliability. Different from other approaches, the state-driven algorithm allows to increase the system reliability by lowering the outage probability in the selected scenarios. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been validated by resorting to numerical results after a careful parameter optimization. Copyright (c) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In order to solve the problem of introducing additional Total Degradation (TD) in adaptive satellite system caused by fixed High Power Amplifier (HPA) operating point, the paper proposes an adaptive HPA Input Back-Off (IBO) algorithm carried out on the gateway side in the Forward Link of the system based on adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) techniques. On the other hand, the traditional way of evaluation of system-level TD would cause inaccurate assessment if used in adaptive forward link satellite system, so Dynamic Real-Time Total Degradation (DRTTD) is proposed to evaluate overall system performance. Results show that, with the adaptive HPA IBO algorithm adopted, the whole system can obtain system-level DRTTD performance better. This indicates that more appropriate integral HPA's operating point can be obtained in the adaptive forward link of the interactive mobile satellite broadcasting system with the proposed adaptive HPA IBO algorithm than traditional fixed HPA's working status situation.

Dimensioning the mobile link for aeronautical communications between aircraft and the satellite is a critical issue due to the limited power available, in particular if an omnidirectional antenna is used on board the aircraft. Also there are large channel variations due to the different effects occurring on the L-band mobile link and over-dimensioning of the user terminal or satellite should be avoided. In this context, this paper analyses the interest of using adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) for the mobile link of future aeronautical satellite systems in L band for a European coverage. It analyses in particular the different effects to be compensated, their impact on the link budget and the link dimensioning and performance improvement when using ACM. Finally complementary analyses that would be necessary to further investigate this topic are identified and presented at the end of the paper.
