Direct solution of electromagnetic scattering from perfect electric conducting targets using multilevel characteristic basis function method with adaptive cross approximation algorithm

The adaptive cross approximation (ACA) enhanced multilevel characteristic basis function method (MLCBFM) is studied in this article. It is well known that the impedance submatrices containing the reaction terms of low-level basis functions such as Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis functions have low-rank property. However, the authors find that the high-level impedance matrices between nonoverlapping high-level blocks are also low rank and can be compressed efficiently. This property is used to efficiently calculate the high-level reduced matrix of the MLCBFM through the ACA algorithm in this study. Furthermore an efficient scheme for the high-level characteristic basis functions (CBFs) generation is given, which reduces the redundant operations in the high-level CBFs generation step without loss of accuracy. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the presented method.

Efficient Marching-on-in-Degree Solver of Time Domain Integral Equation with adaptive cross approximation algorithm-Singular Value Decomposition

adaptive cross approximation algorithm with singular value decomposition postcompression (ACA-SVD) is introduced into the marching-on-in-degree solver of time domain integral equation for the analysis of transient electromagnetic scattering from perfect electric conductor (PEC). The computational domain is divided into multilevel groups based on octree. ACA-SVD algorithm is utilized to compute the impedance matrices associated with the well-separated groups at each level. Whereas, the impedance matrices formed by self and neighboring groups are calculated entirely in the traditional manner. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method can greatly reduce the memory requirement and matrix-vector product (MVP) time per iteration.

adaptive cross approximation (ACA) algorithm as a kind of common matrix compression method is often used to analyze the electromagnetic radiation and scattering problems. In the region of far field, the impedance matrix is compressed by ACA method, and the extracted impedance matrix is accelerated filling by equivalent dipole-moment method (EDM). In the area of near field, the method of moments or the equivalent dipole-moment method is applied for filling the impedance matrix. The iterative near field preconditioning technique is used to solve matrix equation, so that fast calculation of radar cross section (RCS) can be achieved. Numerical results show that the computational efficiency is improved significantly via applying the presented method in this paper without sacrificing much accuracy.

In this paper, a MoM solution accelerated by the ACA algorithm is presented to analyze electromagnetic wave interactions with complex 3D objects consisting of metallic and uniaxial anisotropic components. The problem has been formulated using the PMCHWT equations for homogeneous anisotropic media and EFIE for conducting surfaces. The ACA algorithm is applied to accelerate the matrixvector multiplication in the iterative solution. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the good performance of the proposed algorithm.

Improved multilevel physical optics algorithm for fast computation of monostatic radar cross section

This paper proposes an acceleration technique to fast evaluate the monostatic radar cross section (RCS) with the multilevel physical optics (MLPO) algorithm. The proposed method combines the adaptive cross approximation (ACA) algorithm with the MLPO to fast evaluate two-dimensional monostatic RCS (two-dimensional monostatic RCS over a range of elevation angles θ and azimuths angles φ at a fixed frequency f , or a range of frequencies f and azimuths angles φ at a fixed elevation angle θ ) responses. Owing to the phase compensation in the MLPO, the matrix corresponding to the compensated back-scattered field of each group is highly rank-deficient, which is compressed with ACA in a multilevel fashion therefore a lot of central processing unit time will be saved. The rank-deficiency, accuracy and computational complexity of the proposed method have been studied through a couple of numerical examples, which illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Accelerated Characteristic Mode Calculation for PEC Objects Using ACA-QR-SVD algorithm

Characteristic mode (CM) analysis serves as a powerful tool for evaluating the radiation and scattering characteristics of objects. CM formulations within the method of moments (MoM) framework are widely favored due to their ability to offer clear physical insights, handle complex shapes, and facilitate straightforward implementation. However, MoM-based CM formulations become inefficient when applied to electrically large objects due to the dense matrices involved. This article introduces a novel approach using a fast low-rank decomposition-based implicitly restarted Arnoldi method (IRAM) to accelerate CM computations. The adaptive cross approximation (ACA) and QR-SVD algorithms are employed to efficiently compute the low-rank decomposition of matrices. The ACA-QR-SVD algorithm offers advantages in matrix filling, LU factorization, and matrix-vector multiplication processes, thereby enhancing efficiency. Numerical simulations on two representative objects demonstrate that the proposed algorithm notably improves computational speed and reduces memory requirements while maintaining high computational accuracy.
