Taking advantage of the broadcast nature of wireless medium, a relay node can forward an overheard signal from the source to enhance the receiving quality. Many previous studies on cooperative relaying focus on maximal ratio combining (MRC) to exploit the spatial diversity. However, it is complex to enable different modulation levels with MRC so as to better address varying channel conditions. There has been some existing work on the performance of cooperative relaying with selection combining (SC). In this paper, we further consider adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) in a cooperative relaying scenario with selection combining. Based on the bit error rate (BER) analysis, the minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) thresholds are determined to activate different modulation modes at the relay node, such that the overall BER at the destination is no greater than a target BER constraint. Simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of the BER analysis. The numerical results demonstrate the performance gain of cooperative relaying with adaptive modulation and selection combining.

Link adaptation (LA) has been demonstrated to be a very effective technique to improve transmission reliability in wireless communication systems subject to fading channel fluctuations. Due to the diffusion in commercial systems, LA techniques should take into account realistic channel models, low complexity algorithms, and application requirements. In this work, after analyzing the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) performance for progressive images transmission, we propose a modified AMC technique that jointly takes into account both the channel variations and the progressive nature of the encoded bitstream. Since different priorities are assigned to the bits by the source encoder, an unequal error protection AMC method, that enhances transmission reliability for high priority bits, is necessary. Rather than increasing the complexity of the channel coding and modulation techniques, we adopt classical AMC methods optimizing the thresholds for the selection of opportunist modulation and coding schemes. The results show that the proposed technique is robust even with non-ideal channel state information.

In this paper, we consider efficient communication over land mobile satellite channels (LMSC) based on a cooperative automatic repent request (ARQ) strategy. Specifically, we propose a cross-layer design which combines adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer with cooperative truncated ARQ protocol at the data link layer. We first derive a closed form expression for the spectral efficiency in this setting. Aiming at maximizing this performance measure, we then optimize an AMC scheme which directly satisfies a prescribed packet loss rate constraint at the data-link layer. The results indicate that utilizing cooperative diversity to mitigate channel blockage in a LMSC, noticeably enhances the spectral efficiency compared with the system that employs only AMC at the physical layer. Moreover, the proposed combining scheme outperforms the fixed rate cooperative ARQ when the transmission rates at the source and relay are chosen based on channel statistics.

This paper investigates a scheme for deriving feedback information for the interference rejection combining (IRC) receiver, which can suppress inter-cell interference, in order to perform adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), user scheduling, and transmission precoding at the serving eNodeB appropriately in the LTE/LTE-Advanced downlink. In this paper, we evaluate the negative impact of inappropriate feedback information for the IRC receiver, i.e., not including the interference suppression effect, and the effectiveness of appropriate feedback information on the user throughput performance. Simulation results assuming two transmitter/receiver antenna branches and an uncorrelated channel show that interference suppression for the IRC receiver does not affect the precoding matrix selection when selecting a common precoding matrix for the transmission bandwidth. Furthermore, even when the IRC receiver calculates the feedback information excluding the effect of interference suppression, the user throughput improves compared to that for the conventional MMSE receiver, which cannot suppress the inter-cell interference. However, when comparing the performance of the IRC receivers that calculate the feedback information when including and excluding the effect of interference suppression, the results show that the degree of improvement in the user throughput when excluding the interference suppression effect degrades due to inappropriate feedback information.

Age of Information (AoI) has attracted much attention recently due to its capability of characterizing the freshness of information in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). To improve the information freshness over a fading channel shared by multiple users, efficient scheduling methods are highly desired for IIoT. In this paper, we are interested in a cross-layer scheduling policy, in which power and rate-adaptive transmissions are enabled in the physical layer. More specifically, we adopt a probabilistic scheduling method to minimize AoI while satisfying an average power constraint. The optimization of the probabilistic scheduling policy is formulated as a Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP), the dimension of which grows exponentially with the number of users and the buffer size. To overcome the prohibitive computational cost, we reveal the threshold-based structure of the AoI-optimal scheduling. Then we conceive a low complexity iterative algorithm that gives us the optimal freshness-aware scheduling policy.

In high-speed railway communication system, due to its intrinsic features, on-going services are more prone to drop than in common communication systems. Therefore, existing admission control (AC) schemes designed for common communication systems cannot be directly used, otherwise the service dropping probability (SDP) requirement cannot be guaranteed. In this paper, a cross-layer AC scheme is designed to improve system SDP performance in high-speed railway communication system. Firstly, we clearly classify the main potential origins of service dropping into two types: modulation and coding scheme (MCS) changed service dropping and handoff service dropping. And then corresponding adaptive resource reservation algorithms are proposed to improve SDP performance, where the influence of MCS change and the unique characteristics of high-speed railway communication are taken into account. Simulation results show that compared with traditional cutoff AC scheme, the proposed AC scheme can effectively improve SDP performance while maintaining fairly desirable performance of service blocking probability and system bandwidth utilization.

We investigate multicast/broadcast of digital video over spread-spectrum CDMA cellular networks, a platform targeted at various kinds of multimedia services. In particular, we propose an end-to-end embedded transmission scheme which combines a scalable video source coder, adaptive power allocation, adaptive channel coding and an embedded multiresolution modulation strategy to simultaneously deliver a basic quality-of-service (QoS) to less capable receivers and an enhanced QoS for more capable receivers. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach using the ITU-T H.263+ video source coder, although the approach is generally applicable to other scalable source coding schemes as well.

Optimum allocation of resources is demand of every modern communication system. In this way the transmission parameters like code rate, modulation size and power are optimally chosen to enhance the overall system throughput while satisfying certain constraints at the same time. A similar constrained optimization problem is focused for OFDM environment and solved by proposed Fuzzy Rule Based System (FRBS) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In this proposal FRBS is used for adapting code rate and modulation size while PSO is used for adaptive power. Significance of the proposed scheme is shown through the simulations.

IEEE 802.16, which supports adaptions among different modulation and coding schemes, flexibly adjusts to complicated tactical scenarios. In this paper, by modeling the problem and determining proper metrics, we investigate the bit error ratio, spectrum efficiency, and the length of cyclic prefix under different modulation schemes, thus concluding that choosing a proper modulation and coding scheme adaptively according the channel SNR can achieve higher spectrum efficiency. Furthermore, we have considered a one-hop relay scenario where relays are leveraged to enlarge the transmission range and increase the capacity. Simulation results show that the amplifying and forwarding relays can evidently enhance the capacity of the system. If the forwarding power of a relaying node were raised, the capacity would be improved even more. The simulation validates the design, supporting the employment of relays in tactical communications.

In this paper, we propose a cross-layer model to provide reliable video stream transmission in the mobile environment. In the proposed model, the application-layer forward error correction (A-FEC) parameters at the application layer, the ARQ parameters at the data link layer and the adaptive modulation and coding parameters at the physical layer are jointly designed. By maximizing the number of correctly decodable frames in a group of picture (GOP) according to the GOP structure and the resources provided by low layers, the PSNR of the video stream at the receiver is improved. We also present a low computational complexity bandwidth allocation algorithm for the A-FEC. Simulation results show that the PSNR of the video stream at the receiver is improved about 1dB with our proposed cross-layer model.
