In this paper we propose a novel connection admission control scheme named Rate Transition Area assisted Guaranteed Handover Scheme (GHS-RTA), which utilizes the geographical information, rate transition areas and overlap areas to intelligently decide when to block a new call. This scheme helps avoid possible inter-cell and intra-cell handover failures for HAP communications systems with adaptive modulation and coding in the physical layer. Simulation results show that the GHS-RTA can improve the average new call blocking probability greatly (by a minimum of 21.5% for the system model with the parameter values chosen) while maintaining zero inter-cell and intra-cell handover call dropping probabilities compared with Extended Time-based Channel Reservation Algorithm, and that the larger the rate transition area and the overlap area, the better the average new call blocking performance.

Modern wireless communication systems adapt the employed modulation and coding Scheme (MCS) to the instantaneous channel quality in order to maximise the amount of bits correctly transmitted per time unit (i.e., the throughput). An important aspect in the study of this technique, referred to as adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), is the characterisation of the link throughput performance under realistic fading channels. In this context, this work derives analytically tractable closed-form expressions for the link throughput performance of AMC under Rayleigh, Nakagami-m, Nakagami-q (Hoyt), Nakagami-n ( Rice), eta-mu and kappa-mu fading channels. The correctness and accuracy of the obtained expressions is corroborated numerically and with results from an LTE link level AMC simulator.

In this paper we describe a multi-layered video transport scheme for wireless channels capable of adapting to channel conditions in order to maximize end-to-end quality of service (QoS). This scheme combines a scalable H.263+ video source coder with unequal error protection (UEP) ac-cross layers. The UEP is achieved by employing different channel codes together with a multiresolution modulation approach to transport the different priority layers. Adaptivity to channel conditions is provided through use of joint source-channel coding (JSCC) which attempts to jointly optimize the source and channel coding rates together with the modulation parameters to obtain the maximum achievable end-to-end QoS for the prevailing channel conditions. Results indicate that this adaptive JSCC scheme employing scalable video encoding together with a multiresolution modulation/coding approach leads to significant improvement-, in delivered video quality for specified channel conditions. In particular, the approach results in considerably improved graceful degradation properties for decreasing channel SNR.

A major evolution of the UMTS standard is the so-called High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) mode, which provides peak data rates of 10.8 Mbps. Key enabling technologies include fast scheduling, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), as well as hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ). This paper gives a general overview of the current HSDPA standard. Special focus is put on the implementation and performance of the AMC and HARQ functions, as well as on their interworking. The performance of different HARQ schemes are compared for QPSK and 16-QAM and varying code rates. Subsequently link-level throughput is simulated. It is shown that the throughput gains offered by advanced HARQ schemes depend on the performance of the AMC function. In particular, the gain offered by incremental redundancy techniques increases with increasing errors in selecting the appropriate moduladon and code rate.

Emerging 4G standards, such as WiMAX, LTE, and TD-SCDMA, have adopted the proven technique of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) to dynamically react to channel fluctuations while maintaining bit-error rate targets of the transmission. To mitigate the vicious effects due to stale channel state indication (CSI) problem, this paper introduces a novel framework by incorporating AMC with layered transmission through Superposition coding (SPC). A Markov chain model is adopted under this framework, to effectively assist the system in selecting the optimal modulation and coding scheme for each layer in every multi-resolution unicast transmission. Extensive simulation is conducted to verify the proposed framework and compare it with a number of counterparts. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework can achieve a much better spectrum efficiency due to improved robustness by addressing the stale CSI problem at each multi-resolution modulated transmission.

adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) technique plays an important role in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) systems. It enables smart vehicles to keep a good quality of communication for a better driving experience. However, the existing AMC methods for V2V system did not consider multiple scenarios and the amount of calculation is relatively large. In this paper, we propose a simple convolutional neural networks (CNN)-based AMC method which can extract features of channel and noise estimation from receiver, the transmitter will adjust in the light of modulation strategy to ensure the quality of V2V communication. Simulation results reveal that our proposed method performs better in terms of packet error rate (PER), throughput, classification accuracy with a lower prediction time.

Bit rates in flat-fading OFDM wireless systems can be improved through the use of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). In this paper, we propose two practical, efficient link adaptation algorithms that use fixed link tables defined by SNR ranges for supported spectral efficiencies. The purpose is to design non-iterative algorithms with acceptable performance and reduced computational complexity relative to the alternative iterative solutions. Our simulations indicate that the proposed algorithms come within 3 dB of the spectral efficiency of the optimal Water-Filling AMC method and 2 dB of the BL-AMC model, but with significantly reduced computational complexity.

Recently, LTE-based femtocell system has received significant attention as a promising solution offering high-speed services, enhanced indoor coverage and increased system capacity. Intelligently allocate resources in multi-user OFDMA-based network is the substantial aim towards interference mitigation and enhancing power and spectral efficiencies. In this paper, we propose a downlink joint resource allocation with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) technique for such system, namely AMC-QRAP. The proposal core is adjusting the transmission link to the channel status and users demand through the power control and suitable selection of the modulation/coding scheme. Clustered network is adopted and users differentiation is considered providing Quality of Service (QoS) in the network. Our resolution model is solved as an optimization problem using the linear programming. We show through extensive simulations the outperformance of our method compare to different state-of-the-art methods using different evaluation metrics.

The key to friendly collaboration in vehicular communication systems lies in the reliable communication between vehicles. The current systems, which employ fixed transmission schemes, significantly constrain system capacity in respect of spectrum. Besides, considering the dynamic environment of vehicular communications, the requirement for real-time scenario identification is particularly urgent. Hence, in order to improve the reliability of communications, this paper proposes an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) technique driven by deep learning (DL)-based scenario identification (SI) in vehicular communication systems, namely SI-AMC. In contrast to the traditional AMC technique, our proposed SI-AMC attains a refined channel response estimation through the pre-discrimination of scenario features, thereby further enhancing vehicular communication performance. During the transmission process, the SI-AMC scheme achieves environment adaptability through rate-adaptive adjustments. Moreover, in terms of SI, we creatively design an enhanced convolutional neural network structure which exploits a novel activation function and regularization strategies to enhance the robustness of the model. Simulation results show that the accuracy of SI reaches up to 97.86% and the throughput of the entire link in vehicular communications is effectively promoted. Inter-satellite links (ISLs) play an important role in the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), which is known as one of the key technologies for the next generation of navigation satellite systems. Deep reinforcement learning algorithms have achieved significant improvement over various wireless communications systems. However, it has been reported that deep Q network (DQN) algorithm requires an enormous number of trials. To resolve this problem, in this paper we propose an adaptive modulation and coding scheme based on a neural episodic control (NEC) algorithm, which is one of deep reinforcement learning algorithms. The proposed scheme adjusts the modulation and coding scheme region boundaries with a differentiable neural dictionary of the NEC agent, which enables the effective integration of the previous experience. In addition, we propose a step-size varying algorithm to encourage the NEC agent to efficiently approach the suboptimal state. We confirm that the proposed scheme can reduce the number of trials to 1/8 compared to the previous work of the DQN-based adaptive modulation scheme. It is also confirmed that the proposed scheme requires the number of trials to the suboptimal state 1/5 of the fixed step-size dueling double DQN and 1/7 of the fixed step-size double DQN-based schemes, respectively. To further evaluate the proposed scheme, we employ an online learning loss evaluation algorithm that calculates the loss in time-step based on interaction records of the reinforcement learning agent and the derived modulation and coding scheme region boundaries.
