Dynamic Routing and Scheduling Approach for Aircraft Taxi Automation with Adaptive surface Situation

The emergence of surface trajectory-based operation (STBO) has promoted the development of taxi automation systems to plan conflict-free aircraft trajectories for efficient airport operations. Unlike traditional airport ground movement, aircraft guided by the taxi automation system possess a significant degree of freedom during taxiing, requiring the system to coordinate aircraft movement on the surface with timely responses to uncertainty. This study proposes a dynamic routing and scheduling approach with an adaptive surface situation characterization mechanism. A link-level unimpeded taxi time estimation method is designed to fine-grain characterize airport operation. A comprehensive evaluation system is then developed to identify similar situation patterns. Finally, a dynamic routing and scheduling approach is proposed to optimize airport ground movement with an adaptive and refined surface situation mechanism. The case study of actual operational data collected from a hub airport reveals that the proposed approach achieves efficient movement plans and collaborative control for all aircraft, as well as a more balanced utilization of the runway. The embedded adaptive situation mechanism also makes a better tradeoff between computational efficiency and optimal solutions. The study provides a promising approach to generating conflict-free four-dimensional trajectories for airport operations in future STBO scenarios.

Multi-Objective Route Planning for Aircraft Taxiing Under Different Traffic Conflict Types

Aircraft taxiing in large airports is often delayed by traffic conflicts. The increased fuel consumption and pollutant emission lower the efficiency of airport surface operation and bring potential safety hazards. Previous studies on route planning for surface taxiing seldom involve refined delay analysis under different traffic conflict types and discussions on route planning at airports with various environmental parameters and under diverse aircraft types. In this study, dynamic models of crossing, head-on, and trailing conflicts during aircraft taxiing were constructed, and delays of these three conflict types were determined. The shortest route set of restricted routing was determined by the Yen algorithm according to the topological network, conflict-induced delay, and spatial distributions of taxiing at airports. Considering the three optimization objects, the aircraft route planning was optimized and determined from the shortest route set according to the differences in the environmental parameters and aircraft types. Experiment results show that the proposed method achieves 9.6-12.1% higher route planning precision in all traffic periods compared with previous route planning with considerations to taxiing conflict. This method also provides support to the dynamic decision of airport operation and control departments according to the environment and performance of aircraft.

Tunnel Gaussian Process Model for Learning Interpretable Flight's Landing Parameters

Approach and landing accidents have resulted in a significant number of hull losses worldwide. Technologies (e.g., instrument landing system) and procedures (e.g., stabilized approach criteria) have been developed to reduce the risks. This paper proposes a data-driven method to learn and interpret flight's approach and landing parameters to facilitate comprehensible and actionable insights into flight dynamics. Specifically, two variants of tunnel Gaussian process (TGP) models are developed to elucidate aircraft's approach and landing dynamics using advanced surface movement guidance and control system (A-SMGCS) data, which then indicates the stability of flight. TGP hybridizes the strengths of sparse variational Gaussian process and polar Gaussian process to learn from a large amount of data in cylindrical coordinates. This paper examines TGP qualitatively and quantitatively by synthesizing three complex trajectory datasets and compared TGP against existing methods on trajectory learning. Empirically, TGP demonstrates superior modeling performance. When applied to operational A-SMGCS data, TGP provides the generative probabilistic description of landing dynamics and interpretable tunnel views of approach and landing parameters. These probabilistic tunnel models can facilitate the analysis of procedure adherence and augment existing aircrew and air traffic controller' displays during the approach and landing procedures, enabling necessary corrective actions.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) requested that The MITRE Corporation explore the feasibility of providing Remotely Operated Aerodrome control (ROAC) services at Singapore Changi Airport and achieve throughput similar to a conventional tower. Under the ROAC concept, air traffic control officers' (ATCOs) provide air traffic control (ATC) services to aerodrome traffic mainly using real-time visual representation of the operational environment rather than looking out the tower cabin windows. CAAS' interest in ROAC services for Changi Airport represents a significant challenge as Singapore Changi is one of the world's busiest airports. Currently, facilities certified for ROAC operations around the world are mainly for airports with lower traffic volume or with limited throughput. The human-in-the-loop (HITL) experiment described in this paper examined ATCOs' ability to manage high-intensity airport operations in a ROAC environment. The primary objective was to evaluate the feasibility of the ROAC concept at the highest historical traffic level recorded at Changi Airport. The secondary objectives of the HITL experiment were to evaluate any operational differences in terms of handling traffic, workload, and situation awareness when operational tools are removed, and to gather ATCO feedback about the ROAC concept. Performance of the ATCOs in terms of observed throughput, workload, and perceived situation awareness were measured and observed. Based on the results of this study, ATCOs can manage Changi Airport at traffic levels close to that achieved from the conventional tower with acceptable workload and situation awareness. Overall, results indicate the ROAC concept is feasible for high-intensity operations with throughput similar to a conventional tower. To evaluate the robustness of the ROAC concept, tools available to the ATCOs in the ROAC environment, such as the panoramic view and pantilt-zoom (PTZ) camera system were removed;in these cases, ATCO work

As the global air transportation industry has developed and the number of aircraft in hub airports has increased rapidly, airport surface traffic control by airfield lights and voice communication has caused increases in workload and human error for both controllers and pilots, especially in hub airports with high-density traffic flows and complex taxiway configurations. Therefore, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has issued Doc. 9830 [1], which proposes guidelines for advanced surface movement guidance and control systems (A-SMGCS), including four basic functions: monitoring, controlling, routing, and guidance. Such systems aim to ensure that aircraft on the ground operate safely, rapidly, and in an orderly manner, even under conditions of high density, low visibility, and complex configurations [2,3]. ICAO Doc. 9830 [1] specifically points out that a high-level A-SMGCS should deploy guidance functions when the visibility is less than aerodrome visibility operational level [1].

Airports are identified as the future bottlenecks of air transport. advanced surface movement guidance and control system (A-SMGCS) is seen as a key R&D topic the most promising way to achieve the necessary shift. This paper points out how Italy is addressing the challenge of A-SMGCS implementation and shows the first Italian A-SMGCS test-bed and validation process deployed at Milan-Malpensa.
