advanced systems engineering (ASE) is a new paradigm that approaches engineering practices for future market solutions. Frugal Innovation (FI) represents a promising concept that focuses on sustainable solutions with limited resources. According to the authors, frugal innovation may have a significant impact on sustainable product development but lacks engineering approaches for the systematic development of frugal products. Exploring the links between ASE and FI could help to identify suitable fields of application to ensure sustainable product development. The analysis is based on a comprehensive study on frugal innovation in German mechanical and plant engineering that was recently conducted by the authors. Therefore, this paper explores potential patterns to integrate advanced systems engineering for the development of frugal innovations based on findings from the German mechanical and plant engineering sector. Tomorrow's products and services will become more intelligent, more connected and more autonomous. New development paradigms such as advanced systems engineering are being implemented to deal with the increasing complexity of offerings and their development. At the same time, demographic change is resulting in a shortage of skilled workers in development departments. Competence and knowledge management is becoming a significant key factor. One way of ensuring competences and making organizational structures more flexible are role models. Role models include groups of role profiles specific to the company with clear tasks and competences as well as associated responsibilities and authorities. The objective of this paper is the analysis of the term role model in advanced systems engineering. The challenges and advantages for companies should be worked out.

The consideration of sustainable aspects in product development is becoming increasingly important but is a challenging task due to complexity, blurred boundaries, and dynamic events in context. While many approaches already take sustainability aspects into account, there is a lack of holistic approaches that consider the role of the individual and bring together the goals of product development and society. In this approach, a holistic connection between the view of product development and society's view of sustainability was created via a framework that combines the HTO analysis and the SDGs. It thus creates a translation from which requirements can be derived and validated of the decomposition and decryption of black boxes, considering dynamic changes in the context. This promotes the gain of knowledge by product developers during the early phase of the development process. Further investigations will be made to concretize this holistic approach through suitable development methods such as advanced systems engineering (ASE). Copyright (C) 2024 The Authors. Dynamic and volatile market environments influenced by sustainability and circularity are core topics impacting today's value creation. They impact business on different levels, ranging from strategy and management to part and production design. In the common systems engineering RFLP-understanding they can be seen as additional requirements to be considered during product development and to be balanced with other requirements derived from stakeholders or regulation. Additionally, circular product design can offer new opportunities for design of business models and strategy on product or company level. This paper presents an approach for coupling of two levels of product related decision making utilizing the concepts of model based systems engineering. The levels are (1) strategy and business-model related decisions, (2) product architecture including requirements. The presented approach can serve as a support for system architects and business model designers. Copyright (C) 2024 The Authors. Complicated decisions must be made when developing new product generations of mechatronic systems. The information on which the decision-making process is based largely determines the outcome. A data-based decision-making basis has great potential to improve the decisions made and, therefore, the products. This work examines the intuitive approach of developers for product optimization by using data analysis as a basis for decision-making. Based on 72 case studies, model levels of a behavioral model are abstracted. It can be observed that the principles of general systems theory can be found in the behavior of the developers. The proposed behavioral model is initially applied to show how further beneficial effects can be realized by modelling data analyses in the described manner. The paper discusses the benefits of using such a behavioral model to optimate the way of applying data-driven development methods. To illustrate this, an analysis example from a car manufacturer and a machine tool manufacturer are used respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

Traditional engineering is coming to a junction from embedded systems to embodied actors, and with assuring the beneficial and robust behavior of dynamic federations of situation-aware, intent-driven, explorative, ever-evolving, and increasingly autonomous actors in uncertain and largely unpredictable real-world contexts. In our quest for a meaningful deployment of embodied actors in our societal fabric we are deriving central design challenges. A particular emphasis thereby is put on the role of formal methods for designing embodied systems in which we actually may put our trust.

Interdisciplinary engineering of cyber physical production systems (CPPS) are often subject to delay, cost overrun and quality problems or may even fail due to the lack of efficient information exchange between multiple interdisciplinary teams working in complex networks within and across companies. We propose a direct integration of multiteam and organisational aspects into the graphical notation of the systems engineering workflow. BPMN++, with eight new notational elements and two subdiagrams, enables the modelling of the required cooperation aspects. BPMN++ provides an improved overview, uniform notation, more compact presentation and easier modifiability from an engineering point of view. We also included a first set of empirical studies and historical qualitative and quantitative data in addition to subjective expert-based ratings to increase validity. The use case introduced to explain the procedure and the notation is derived from surveys in plant manufacturing focussing on the start-up phase and decision support at site. This, in particular, is one of the most complex and critical phases with potentially high economic impact. For evaluation purposes, we compare two alternative solutions for a short-term management decision in the start-up phase of CPPS using the BPMN++ approach.
