A proposed hardware reference model for spatial transformation and quantization in H.264

This paper presents three Very Large Scale Integration prototypes to exploit spatial redundancy in the H.264 standard. The proposed architectures are: (1) forward 4 x 4 integer approximation of DCT transform and quantization, which is applied to all blocks of a frame, (2) the 4 x 4 Hadamard transform and quantization that is applied to the DC coefficients of the luma component when the macroblock is encoded in 16 x 16 intra prediction mode, and (3) the 2 x 2 Hadamard transform and quantization that is applied to the DC coefficients of the chroma component as a second level in the transformation hierarchy. The developed algorithms are adopted by the H.264 standard. A performance analysis shows that the architectures satisfy the real-time constraints required by different digital video applications. Selective Intra Block Size Jecision and Fast Intra Mode Decision Algorithms for H.264/AVC Encoder

In H.264/AVC intra frame coding, the rate-distortion optimization (RDO) is employed to select the optimal coding mode to achieve the minimum rate-distortion cost. Due to a large number of combinations of coding modes, the computational burden of Rate distortion optimization (RDO) becomes extremely high in intra prediction. In this paper, we proposed an efficient selective intra block size decision (SIB) that selects the appropriate block size for intra prediction, further proposed fast intra prediction algorithm reduces a number of modes required for RDO that significantly reduces the encoder complexity. Experimental results show that the proposed fast mode decision algorithm reduces the encoding time by up to 68% with negligible video quality degradation.

Direction-Adaptive Motion Estimation (DAME) for Efficient video Compression

Motion estimation (ME) is widely accepted as an effective tool in video coding to reduce temporal correlation between frames and yields significant improvement in compression gain while sustaining the picture quality. Among various ME schemes, block-matching motion estimation (BMME) is the most popular approach due to its simplicity and efficiency. The BMME algorithms use search patterns to find out the best matched block. However, a single search pattern does not prove efficient in finding best matched block for all motion types. In this research, an efficient direction-adaptive motion estimation (DAME) algorithm is proposed which adaptively selects shape and size of the patterns based on motion content. Performance analysis of DAME algorithm on the reference code JM of H.264/AVC platform reveals that the proposed algorithm outperforms other existing BMME algorithms in search points without degrading the picture quality.

Mobile-to-mobile video communications is one of the most requested services which operator networks can offer. However, in a framework where one mobile device sends video information to another, both transmitter and receptor should employ video encoders and decoders with low complexity. On the one hand, traditional video codecs, such as H.264, are based on architectures which have encoders with higher complexity than decoders. On the other hand, Wyner-Ziv (WZ) video coding (a particular case of distributed video coding) is an innovative paradigm, which provides encoders with less complexity than decoders. Taking advantage of both paradigms, in terms of low complexity algorithms, a suitable solution consists in transcoding from WZ to H.264. Nevertheless, the transcoding process should be carried out in an efficient way so as to avoid major delays in communication;in other words, the transcoding process should perform the conversion without requiring the complete process of decoding and re-encoding. Based on all the algorithms and techniques we have proposed before, a low complexity WZ to H.264 Transcoder for the Baseline Profile is proposed in this article. Firstly, the proposed transcoder can efficiently turn every WZ group of pictures into the common H.264 I11P pattern and, secondly, the proposed transcoder is based on the hypothesis that macroblock coding mode decisions in H.264 video have a high correlation with the distribution of the side information residual in WZ video. The proposed algorithm selects one sub-set of the several coding modes in H.264. Moreover, a dynamic motion estimation technique is proposed in this article for use in combination with the above algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed transcoder reduces the inter prediction complexity in H.264 by up to 93%, while maintaining coding efficiency.

Frame bit allocation for the H.264/AVC video coder via Cauchy-density-based rate and distortion models

Based on the observation that a Cauchy density is more accurate in estimating the distribution of the ac coefficients than the traditional Laplacian density, rate and distortion models with improved accuracy are developed. The entropy and distortion models for quantized discrete cosine transform coefficients are justified in a frame bit-allocation application for H.264. Extensive analysis with carefully selected anchor video sequences demonstrates a 0.24-dB average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) improvement over the JM 8.4 rate control algorithm, and a 0.33-dB average PSNR improvement over the TM5-based bit-allocation algorithm that has recently been proposed for H.264 by Li et al. The analysis also demonstrates 20% and 60% reductions in PSNR variation among the encoded pictures when compared to the JM 8.4 rate control algorithm and the TM5-based bit-allocation algorithm, respectively.

A Low Complexity Detection of Discrete Cross Differences for Fast H.264/AVC Intra Prediction

A low complexity fast mode decision algorithm for H.264/AVC intra prediction that uses discrete cross differences (DCD) to reduce the unlikely candidate modes in the RDO calculation is proposed. By using horizontal and vertical differences in different locations, the directions of the edges can be precisely detected. Experimental results show that the proposed fast mode decision algorithm reduces the encoding time by about 56%, with negligible loss of video quality. To realize the proposed algorithm, a VLSI design, which is comprised of a cross difference unit and direction detection unit, is implemented for the mode pre-selection stage of intra prediction. The design is synthesized using UMC 0.18 mu m CMOS technology and simulated with Verilog-XL. The operating frequency of the synthesized core can exceed 50 MHz.

SVC-MST BWQLB multicast over software-defined networking

This paper presents a Scalable video coding (SVC) system over multicast Software-Defined Networking (SDN), which focuses on, transmission management for the sender-receiver model. Our approach reduces bandwidth usage by allowing the receiver to select various video resolutions in a multicast group, which helps avoid a video freezing issue during bandwidth congestion. Moreover, the SVC Multiple Sessions Transmission Bandwidth thresholds Quantised Level Balance (SVC-MST BWQLB) routes different layers of the SVC stream using distinct paths and reduces storage space and bandwidth congestion problems in different video resolutions. The experimental results show that the proposed model provides better display quality than the traditional Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing technique. Furthermore, it reduced transmission delays by up to 66.64% for grouped resolutions compared to SVC-Single Session Transmission (SVC-SST). Additionally, the modified Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) header and the sorting buffer for SVC-MST are proposed to deal with the defragmentation problem.

Due to its coding efficiency and strong demand for compression technology from the professional video production industry, the JVT recently standardized five new profiles for high quality video - one predictive and the rest intra only. Of these, the new High 4:4:4 Profile sits atop virtually the entire original chain of H.264/AVC profiles (not counting the more recent scalable and multiview coding profiles, which are somewhat specialized), and subsumes the others -- it lacks only the error resilience tools found in Baseline and Extended Profiles. It may thus be regarded as the ultimate codec in the new standard family. While several companies are known to have developed internal technology for this profile, to our knowledge no commercial product has been released to support this profile. In this paper, we present some elements of the first commercial software encoder for the H.264/AVC High 4:4:4 Profile. We make significant progress on real-time performance, using the new Intel i7 processor, while providing some visual performance results on a potential application to infrared sensors, where high dynamic range is critical.

We designed a SoC/ASIC to implement the low power, high performance H.264 encoder and decoder with a 32-bit RISC CPU on a single chip. We used the system modeling technique to develop the H.264 codec and high-speed RISC microprocessor cores. and adopted the transaction-level based verification technique to do the automatic self-checking, regression testing for the design. The SoC runs the H.264 codec in hardware. It incorporated standard peripheral interfaces, such as UART. USB. 100/10 Mbps Ethernet. IEEE 1394, ATAPI, and SVGA. It supports embedded real-time OS for PDA and wireless applications. It is implemented for complicated Linux operating systems used for personal video recorder, DVD recorder, game and set top boxes, digital camcorders, video conferencing kit, and network computers.

Optimal Cost Modeling Scheme for Efficient Intra-Prediction Mode in video Compression

It can be seen that the success rate of the video compression standard H.264 is quite high owing to its wide range of adoption. However, the legacy version of video compression techniques built on the top of H.264 might ensure reduced bitrate while preserving the quality of the reconstructed video signal to some extent, but it is achieved at the price of compression complexity. Our investigation reveals that H.264 achieves higher compression efficiency with MPEG files but does not ensure optimized performance for intra-prediction mode decision with rate distortion. The prime reason lies into less emphasis on redesigning the encoder with optimized cost function which could improvise the performance of existing Lagrangian cost function (LCF). This area of research was explored and accentuated in many studies but still very few talked in a favor to comprehend the cost optimization performance for encoding I-frame and P-frame in MPEG videos. Unlike existing literature, the study found scope of redesigning the H.264-based encoder module considering the baseline of LCF and in addition introduces a novel cost function to optimize the flow of execution of encoding. In this regard, a computational framework is introduced for realizing the numerical modeling integrating both LCF and proposed CF for H.264 intra-prediction mode decision. The novelty of this system is that it does not have dependency on the operations of entropy coding during rate-distortion (RD) optimization and this approach positively impacts on the computing performance of the system. The evaluated performance outcome shows a detailed comparison between both the methods on the basis of peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), bit-error rate (bit/s) and encoding time (s). Unlike LCF, the outcome of the study claims its effectiveness in maintaining a well-balanced performance between reconstructed signal quality and encoding time. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
