Communicating the right affect, a feeling, experience or emotion, is critical in creating engaging visual communication. We carried out three studies examining how different color properties (lightness, chroma and hue) and different palette properties (combinations and distribution of colors) contribute to different affective interpretations in information visualization where the numbers of colors is typically smaller than the rich palettes used in design. Our results show how color and palette properties can be manipulated to achieve affective expressiveness even in the small sets of colors used for data encoding in information visualization.

We propose emordle, a conceptual design that animates wordles (compact word clouds) to deliver their emotional context to audiences. To inform the design, we first reviewed online examples of animated texts and animated wordles, and summarized strategies for injecting emotion into the animations. We introduced a composite approach that extends an existing animation scheme for one word to multiple words in a wordle with two global factors: the randomness of text animation (entropy) and the animation speed (speed). To create an emordle, general users can choose one predefined animated scheme that matches the intended emotion class and fine-tune the emotion intensity with the two parameters. We designed proof-of-concept emordle examples for four basic emotion classes, namely happiness, sadness, anger, and fear. We conducted two controlled crowdsourcing studies to evaluate our approach. The first study confirmed that people generally agreed on the conveyed emotions from well-crafted animations, and the second one demonstrated that our identified factors helped fine-tune the extent of the emotion delivered. We also invited general users to create their own emordles based on our proposed framework. Through this user study, we confirmed the effectiveness of the approach. We concluded with implications for future research opportunities of supporting emotion expression in visualizations.

In the past 10 years, how to visualize human emotions in communication has become an important topic. For providing personalized customer service for enterprises from self-reflection in psychology to opinion mining, emotional visualization uses coded emotional computing results to make various basic charts, and some novel visual analysis systems for all-round analysis which intuitively reveal personal views and emotional styles. Emotion visualization uses coded emotion computing results to reflect the emotion analysis tasks, such as self-reflection in psychology or social media opinion mining results. With the help of various basic charts, infographics, and some novel visual analysis systems, it makes all directions' analysis and intuitively reveals personal opinions and emotional styles. At present, emotional visualization has developed to use different platforms or multiple platforms to analyze various complex data, including text, sound, image, video, physiological signal or any mixed data. In this paper, we discuss a total of 75 approaches from four different categories: data source type, emotional computing, visual coding and visualization and visual analysis tasks, and 15 subcategories, including visual works mentioned in published paper and interactive visual works published on the Internet. Then, we discuss the further research approaches of emotional visualization and the prospects of emotional visualization under multidimensional data collaboration. We expect that this survey can help researchers interested in emotional visualization of varied data to find a more suitable visualization method for their data and projects.

What makes speeches effective has long been a subject for debate, and until today there is broad controversy among public speaking experts about what factors make a speech effective as well as the roles of these factors in speeches. Moreover, there is a lack of quantitative analysis methods to help understand effective speaking strategies. In this paper, we propose E-ffective, a visual analytic system allowing speaking experts and novices to analyze both the role of speech factors and their contribution in effective speeches. From interviews with domain experts and investigating existing literature, we identified important factors to consider in inspirational speeches. We obtained the generated factors from multi-modal data that were then related to effectiveness data. Our system supports rapid understanding of critical factors in inspirational speeches, including the influence of emotions by means of novel visualization methods and interaction. Two novel visualizations include E-spiral (that shows the emotional shifts in speeches in a visually compact way) and E-script (that connects speech content with key speech delivery information). In our evaluation we studied the influence of our system on experts' domain knowledge about speech factors. We further studied the usability of the system by speaking novices and experts on assisting analysis of inspirational speech effectiveness.

Visual Anxiolytics is a novel term proposed to describe affective visualizations of which affective quality is predetermined and designed to alleviate anxiety and anxious pathology. This thesis presents ground theory and visual guidelines to inform the design of screen-based interfaces to give users aspects of a restorative and anxiolytic environment at a time when attention restoration is least likely and anxiety highly probable; during sedentary screen-time. Visual Anxiolytics are introduced as an affective layer of the interface capable of communicating affect through aesthetic, abstract, ambient emotion visualizations existing in the periphery of the screen and users’ vision. Their theory is brought into the field of Visual Communication Design from a number of disciplines; primarily affective Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, and Neuroscience. Visual Anxiolytics attempt to alleviate anxiety through restoration of attentional cognitive resources by rendering the digital environment restorative and by elicitation of positive emotions through affect communication. Design guidelines analyse and describe properties of anxiolytic affective visual attributes color, shape, motion, and visual depth, as well as compositional characteristics of Visual Anxiolytics. Potential implications for future research in emotion visualization and affect communication are discussed.

The communication of affect, a feeling or emotion, has a central role in creating engaging visual experiences. Prior work on the psychology of color has focused on its effect on emotions, color preferences and reactions to color. Studies have attempted to solve problems related to improving aesthetics and emotions of images by improving color themes and templates. However, we have little understanding of how designers manipulate color properties for effective visual communication in information visualization. Designers manipulate color to communicate affect in visual representations, but the knowledge of how to effectively use color is largely rooted in the professional craft of the designer. In this thesis, we report research into how different color properties lightness, chroma and hue contribute to different affective interpretations considered to be of interest in information visualization. We report results of several studies examining whether certain kinds of palettes (sets of colors) were more likely to be chosen to convey different affect. We found significant differences in lightness, chromaticity and hue patterns between desired affective impressions. Our results suggest guidelines for how color properties can be manipulated to achieve affective expressiveness in information visualization.

In modern times, music video (MV) has become an important favorite pastime to people because of its conciseness, convenience, and the ability to bring both audio and visual experiences to audiences. As the amount of MVs is explosively increasing, it has become an important task to develop new techniques for effective MV analysis, retrieval, and management. By stimulating the human affective response mechanism, affective video content analysis extracts the affective information contained in videos, and, with the affective information, natural, user-friendly, and effective MV access strategies could be developed. In this paper, a novel integrated system (***) is proposed for personalized MV affective analysis, visualization, and retrieval. In ***, we not only perform the personalized MV affective analysis, which is a challenging and insufficiently covered problem in current affective content analysis field, but also propose novel affective visualization to convert the abstract affective states intuitive and friendly to users. Based on the affective analysis and visualization, affective information based MV retrieval is achieved. Both comprehensive experiments and subjective user studies on a large MV dataset demonstrate that our personalized affective analysis is more effective than the previous algorithms. In addition, affective visualization is proved to be more suitable for affective information-based MV retrieval than the commonly used affective state representation strategies.

Because of the fast increasing number of movies and long time span each movie lasts, novel methods should be developed to help users browse movies and find their desired clips effectively. affective information in movies is closely related with users' experiences and preferences. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the affective states of movies and propose affective information based movie browsing. affective movie content analysis is challenging due to the great variety of movie contents and styles. To address this challenge, we first extract rich audio-visual features. Then, feature selection and affective modeling are carried out to select and map effective features into corresponding affective states. Finally, we propose novel affective visualization techniques which intuitively visualize affective states to achieve efficient and user-friendly movie browsing. Experiments on representative movie dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods.
