For a network canceler, whose input is mainly speech, the proportionate affine projection algorithm (PAPA) is expected to present faster convergence speed than the existing proportionate NLMS algorithms. However, the performance criteria of fast convergence speed conflicts with low steady-state misalignment when a constant step-size parameter is applied. In this article we introduce a variable step-size technique into the PAPA in order to achieve both fast convergence speed and low steady-state misalignment. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can greatly improve the steady-state misalignment without sacrificing the fast convergence speed of the PAPA.

In this paper, a novel structure is proposed in order to improve the functionality of Adaptive Noise Cancellers (ANC);for this purpose affine projection algorithm (APA) has been used. We exploit the Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT) to decompose the input signals in subbnad to achieve a higher convergence rate. The reason of using SWT (an oversampled filter bank) is to reduce the effect of aliasing which produces some disturbance on the adaptive process. Since In the higher frequency subbands, there is no noticeable difference between APA and simpler approaches such as spectral subtraction or Wiener filter, these algorithms are substituted instead of APA for the sake of complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed ANC performance is better than the conventional ANC which uses adaptive algorithm in the time domain.. The results of subjective and objective tests confirm this fact.

A new affineprojection (AP) algorithm based on dichotomous coordinate descent (DCD) iterations has been recently proposed for acoustic echo cancellation (AEC). It uses a constant step size parameter and, therefore, has to compromise between fast convergence and tracking on the one hand, and low misadjustment and robustness to the presence and variations of a near-end signal on the other hand. In this paper we propose a variable step-size (VSS) version of the DCD-AP algorithm (VSS-DCD-AP) that does not require any a priori information about the acoustic environment. It is shown that the new algorithm is robust against near-end signal variations, including double-talk (DT).

The introduction of data reuse in the incremental topology made it possible for combinations of LMS filters to outperform algorithms such as the affine projection algorithm (APA) with lower complexity. This work poses and extends the concept of combinations as a complexity reduction technique by proposing an incremental combination of sign-error LMS filters that matches and even outperforms stand-alone LMS filters with reduced complexity. This combination is then analyzed and used as a building block in a larger combination that is able to match the APA at a reduced computational cost. Numerical simulations illustrate the performance of this novel combination in different scenarios.

In this paper, we propose new variable step size affine projection algorithms whose step sizes are adjusted according to the square of a time-averaging estimate of the autocorrelation of a priori and a posteriori errors. The proposed algorithms have fast convergence, robustness against near-end signal variations (including double-talk) and do not require any a priori information about the acoustic environment. The simulation results indicate the good performance of the proposed algorithms when compared to similar algorithms.

This paper proposes a novel affineprojection (AP) algorithm that offers a data-selective method using the condition number as a criterion for low misalignment. Capable of keeping the condition number of an input data matrix small, the proposed AP algorithm adopts a recently reported technique of E-norm. instead of L-2-norm to reduce the computational burden during the estimation of the condition number. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has a lower misalignment than the conventional algorithm in the steady state. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work considers adaptive subchannel equalization in Exponentially-Modulated Filter Bank (EMFB) transmultiplexers (TMUX) when the channel is highly frequency selective. Using higher order sub-equalizers, improves the performance in this condition but convergence rate of adaptive algorithms decreases by increasing their order. Recently, Fine-Coarse (FC) algorithm was proposed for improving the convergence rate but evaluating the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance in realistic channels was addressed to future works. On the other hand, when the channel is highly frequency selective as it cannot be assumed flat over subcarrier bandwidth, the sub-equalizer input will be corrupted by colored spectrum. Therefore the use of affine projection algorithm (APA) that has robust performance even for highly colored excitation signals is proposed in this paper for such situations. The spectral property of sub-equalizer inputs will be studied. FC and APA algorithms are used as subchannel equalizers and compared with Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) algorithm in a frequency selective fading channel. Simulation results show that APA has better performance.

We discuss the optimal regularization parameter of the Filtered-x affineprojection (FX-AP) algorithm suitable for feedforward active noise control. While the original FX-AP algorithm always provides a biased estimate of the minimum-mean-square solution, we show that the optimal regularized FX-AP algorithm is capable to eliminate the bias of the asymptotic solution and thus that the regularization parameter can optimize both the convergence speed and the residual MSE of the algorithm. We derive some expressions for the optimal regularization parameter, and we discuss some heuristic estimations of the optimal regularization parameter in practical conditions.

The computational complexity of the blind adaptive multiuser detection algorithm with multipath fading channel is usually high. By combining Rake receiver and blind multiuser detection based on the affine projection algorithm (APA), an adaptive receiver which can be used in multipath fading channel is presented in this paper. As the APA can provide a good capability to tradeoff convergence speed and computational complexity, the proposed receiver has much improved convergence speed and tracking properties compared to the LMS-based receiver with much reduced computational cost compared to the one based on RLS algorithm, and also the new receiver is extremely near-far resistant. Simulation results are presented to compare our APA-based receiver with the blind LMS and RLS-based schemes and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed receiver.

Two proportionate affineprojection sign algorithms (APSAs) are proposed for system identification applications, such as network echo cancellation (NEC), where the impulse response is often real-valued with sparse coefficients and long filter length. The proposed proportionate-type algorithms can achieve fast convergence and low steady-state misalignment by adopting a proportionate regularization matrix to the APSA. Benefiting from the characteristic of l(1)-norm algorithms, affineprojection, and proportionate matrix, the new algorithms are robust to impulsive interferences and colored input, and achieve much faster convergence rate in sparse impulse responses than the original APSA, the normalized sign algorithm (NSA), and the proportionate least mean square (PNLMS) algorithm. The computational complexity of the new algorithms is lower than the affine projection algorithm (APA) family due to elimination of matrix inversion.
