In this paper, we incorporate an ℓ_p-norm sparsity constraint into linear phase constrained affine projection-sign algorithm (LPCAP-SA). The proposed algorithm combines the effect of linear phase constrained affine projection sign algorithm and ℓ_p-norm sparsity *** proposed algorithm has better performance for linear phase sparse system identification in the presence of vigorous impulsive interference. The proposed ℓ_p-norm LPCAP-SA is based on the ℓ₁-norm minimisation criterion on posterior error and ℓ_p-Norm on weight coefficients and a linear phase constraint. Simulations in Matlab software show that the proposed ℓ_p-norm LPCAP-SA has robustness against impulsive interferences and sparse environment for linear phase system. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This paper presents a novel adaptive control technique for the output voltage regulation of a dc-dc buck converter application. In particular, it focuses on the impact of unexpected system parameter variation on the static and dynamic performance of the system. We apply a Fast affine projection (FAP) technique for the purposes of parameter estimation. This technique has previously been shown by the authors to offer excellent performance as a system identification algorithm for power electronic systems. The FAP algorithm is computationally efficient, exhibits fast parameter estimation convergence, and is highly accurate. The estimated parameters are used to develop a novel Current Balancing ON/OFF (CBOO) switching strategy during transient periods of operation. Here, constant "ON" and constant "OFF" periods are calculated, based on the specific parameter estimation output to achieve optimal control performance and significantly improve the dynamic response of the dc-dc converter. Simulation results demonstrate that, in comparison to classic PI control schemes, the proposed method exhibits superior dynamic performance.

The geometric learning algorithm (GLA) was proposed as an application of the affine projection algorithm (APA) for an adaptive filter to perceptron. In the GLA, the connection weight vector w(n) is updated vertically towards the orthogonal complement of k patterns. The GLA demonstrates some typical behavior when the learning rate lambda is 2, which means that w(n) and w(n+1) are symmetric with respect to the complement. Therefore, in this paper, the GLA with lambda = 2 is discriminated as "symmetric learning algorithm (SLA)" and the convergence properties of the SLA are analyzed. The convergence condition among the order k of the SLA, the number P of patterns and the dimension N of patterns is analyzed theoretically. It is proved that k < N is the necessary condition for convergence when P greater than or equal to 2N. The relation between k and the learning speed is analyzed theoretically. It becomes clear that the maximum learning speed on average can be obtained when k = N/2. These properties are supported by computer simulations. Furthermore, the goodness of the solution by the SLA is investigated through computer simulation. That is, there exists little difference in the goodness of solution by changing the order k.

This paper proposes a novel adaptive active noise control algorithm based on Tikhonov regularization theory. A regularized cost function consisting of the weighted sum of the most recent samples of the residual noise and its derivative is defined. By setting the gradient vector of the cost function to zero, an optimal solution for the control parameters is obtained. Based on the proposed optimal solution, a computationally efficient algorithm for adaptive adjustment of the control parameters is developed. It is shown that the regularized affine projection algorithm can be considered as a very special case of the proposed algorithm. Different computer simulation experiments show the validity and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

The introduction of data reuse in the incremental topology made it possible for combinations of LMS filters to outperform algorithms such as the affine projection algorithm (APA) with lower complexity. This work poses and extends the concept of combinations as a complexity reduction technique by proposing an incremental combination of sign-error LMS filters that matches and even outperforms stand-alone LMS filters with reduced complexity. This combination is then analyzed and used as a building block in a larger combination that is able to match the APA at a reduced computational cost. Numerical simulations illustrate the performance of this novel combination in different scenarios.

This paper proposes a new approach for the cancellation of acoustic echo in a loud speaker enclosed microphone system. The acoustic echo is often sparse in nature and the level of sparseness also changes with time. The input in such applications, is speech which is highly correlated. Thus there is a requirement of an adaptive filter which can work in both sparse and non sparse environment and perform well even for correlated inputs. We present convex combination of conventional affine projection algorithm (APA) with small step size and projection order and zero attraction APA (ZA-APA) for echo cancellation. Steady state excess mean square (EMSE) error analysis revealed that the proposed algorithm converges to conventional APA in non sparse environment and to ZA-APA in case of sparse environment and in semi sparse condition, the steady state EMSE value is at least same as the lesser filter's steady state error or even smaller depending on the value of the constant chosen. Simulation is performed in the context of acoustic echo cancellation and the validity of the proposed algorithm is proved from the simulation results.

The widely used least mean square (LMS) and normalized LMS (NLMS) algorithm for the development of adaptive feedback canceller in hearing aid exhibits poor convergence in the presence of colored signal. However, more often the input signals available to the hearing aid are colored in nature, which results in degraded performance of the feedback canceller and loss of speech intelligibility. The affine projection algorithms (APAs) such as memorized improved proportionate APA (MIPAPA), simplified approximated MIPAPA (SAMIPAPA) offer faster convergence than the NLMS algorithm, especially for speech signals. This paper proposes a variable step size, sparseness controlled SAMIPAPA (VSS-SC-SAMIPAPA) algorithm for feedback cancellation in hearing aids. The performance of this algorithm for feedback cancellation in hearing aids is measured in terms of misalignment and added stable gain (ASG) for both white noise and speech segment as input.

The normalized LMS (NLMS) algorithm has been successfully used in many system identification problems. However, the NLMS algorithm is known to exhibit low convergence speed especially when the input data covariance matrix is ill-conditioned. In this paper, we consider a sub-optimal implementation of the affine projection (AP) algorithm based on a prewithening mechanism, which renders the convergence characteristics less sensitive to the coloring of the input signal spectrum than is the case for the NLMS algorithm. Comparisons with the AP algorithm are given to validate our approach. Implementation details are discussed in the context of hands-free telephony where echo cancelling and speech coding algorithms are integrated on the same DSP board.

This work considers adaptive subchannel equalization in Exponentially-Modulated Filter Bank (EMFB) transmultiplexers (TMUX) when the channel is highly frequency selective. Using higher order sub-equalizers, improves the performance in this condition but convergence rate of adaptive algorithms decreases by increasing their order. Recently, Fine-Coarse (FC) algorithm was proposed for improving the convergence rate but evaluating the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance in realistic channels was addressed to future works. On the other hand, when the channel is highly frequency selective as it cannot be assumed flat over subcarrier bandwidth, the sub-equalizer input will be corrupted by colored spectrum. Therefore the use of affine projection algorithm (APA) that has robust performance even for highly colored excitation signals is proposed in this paper for such situations. The spectral property of sub-equalizer inputs will be studied. FC and APA algorithms are used as subchannel equalizers and compared with Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) algorithm in a frequency selective fading channel. Simulation results show that APA has better performance.

Train public address (PA) system is an important component of Passenger Information System. Acoustic feedback is a well-known problem in public address systems. It will cause howling under certain conditions, which can severely degrade sound quality and limit the maximum allowable amplification of the PA systems. The general adaptive feedback cancellation (AFC) algorithms lead to a biased estimation because of the correlation between source and feedback signals. In order to solve the problem and achieve both fast convergence and low steady-state misalignment, a novel variable step-size improved proportionate affine projection algorithm (IPAPA) based on mixed error cost function with prediction error method (PEM) and howling suppression is proposed in this paper. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
