The issue of mobility from disadvantaged areas to places of interest for work, health care, education, or entertainment poses specific challenges that cannot be approached under the same prism as that of well-resourced areas. In such areas, commuters are often captive of available transportation modes. However, very few studies have focused on identifying the key factors that influence the satisfaction of these commuters. In this paper, we introduce an agent based modeling and simulation approach, to identify and classify these factors. We show, for the case study of a township in South Africa, that speed and quality of the infrastructure are crucial factors, while waiting time and accessibility are to be improved;safety and travel time being to be watched. Then recommendations are provided to improve the service according to these factors.

The spread of COVID-19 between different agents in a hospital emergency department can be simulated by modeling the interactions between the agents and the environment. In this research, we use agent based modeling and simulation techniques to build a model of COVID-19 propagation based on an Emergency Department Simulator which has been tested and validated previously. The benefits of ABM include its ability to simulate complex systems, its flexibility, and its ability to model the interactions between different agents in the system. The obtained model will allow us to build a propagation simulator that enables us to build virtual environments with the aim of analyzing how the interactions between agents influence the rate of virus transmission. The model can be used to study the effectiveness of different interventions, such as social distancing, wearing masks, and vaccination, in reducing the spread of COVID-19.

An agent based modeling approach to evaluate crowd movement strategies and density at bathing areas during Kumbh Mela-2019

Kumbh-Mela of Prayagraj, India, a festival of faith and belief, is one of the many significant gathering events worldwide. Pilgrims arrive from different places to take a holy bath at the confluence point of 3-rivers the Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarasvati. The police department is assigned a major role of handling and managing the dense traffic of pilgrims in this event to avoid unwanted situations. The primary surveillance points are the intersecting junctions and bathing zones. In addition, the authorities make crowd movement plans with different route diversion schemes and sets bathing time intervals to maintain crowd density at the Kumbh Mela site. Significantly, we must test these crowd management plans for a realistic assessment of population count, density maintenance, and time management. In this paper, we have created a model utilizing a micro-modeling agent-based approach that incorporates the virtual environment of the site. We have used AnyLogic, a ABMS tool, to incorporate social forces and stochastic behavior among the synthetic agents. The model simulates different crowd movement plans according to real behavioral scenarios. In the simulation, we have considered the whole bathing procedure as a halt time in the area. We have utilized our model to evaluate the time consumed by the pilgrims to reach "Ghat". Also, to count the number of pilgrims that took a bath in 12 hours on different time intervals set for bathing. The significance of performing these evaluations is to assess the effect on density at the site during the whole arrival, bathing, and departure process.

Predetermined Rollbacks: An extension to Time Warp for spatially parallel agent-based simulation

Time management is an important factor that affects the speed of parallel and distributed simulations. Conservative time management mechanisms advance simulation time after synchronization of logical processes, whereas optimistic time management mechanisms loosen synchronization among processes to speed up simulation. Because of loosened synchronization, the optimistic approaches are vulnerable to causality faults that must be addressed by logical processes during run-time. Repairing a simulation, by means of a rollback mechanism, is one of the most time-consuming processes of optimistic approaches. In this paper, we propose a method that considers precautionary measures against possible future rollbacks for Time Warp mechanism due to Jefferson. Our proposed method, named Predetermined Rollbacks, uses a modified simulation engine that can detect and avoid unnecessary rollbacks. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the speedup of Time Warp in agent-based simulations, where agents communicate in a shared environment.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the benefits and the barriers of agent based decision support.(ABDS) systems in the supply chain context. Design/methodology/approach - Two ABDS systems have been developed and evaluated. The first system concerns a manufacturing supply chain while the second concerns a service supply chain. The systems are based on actual case companies. Findings - This research shows that the benefits of ABDS systems in the supply chain context include the possibility to increase versatility of system architecture, to improve supply chain visibility, to conduct experiments and what-if analyses, to improve the understanding of the real system, and the possibility to improve communication within and between organizations in the supply chain. The barriers of ABDS systems in the supply chain context include the difficulty to access data from partners in the supply chain, the difficulty to access data on a higher level of granularity, and the difficulty to retrieve data from other information systems. Research limitations/implications - The research is explorative in nature therefore empirical data from similar and other research settings should be gathered to reinforce the validity of the findings. Practical implications - This research provides knowledge and insights on how ABDS systems may be developed and used in the supply chain context and demonstrates its main benefits and barriers. Originality/value - This research expands the current research of benefits of ABDS systems to the supply chain domain and also addresses the barriers of ABDS systems to a larger extent than previous research. Comparisons to other simulation based decision support systems are also given.

In healthcare environments we can find several microorganisms causing nosocomial infection, and of which one of the most common and most dangerous is Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. Its presence can lead to serious complications to the patient. Our work uses agent based modeling and simulation techniques to build the model and the simulation of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus contact transmission in emergency departments. The simulator allows us to build virtual scenarios with the aim of understanding the phenomenon of MRSA transmission and the potential impact of the implementation of different measures in propagation rates.

agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) is an effective paradigm to model systems exhibiting complex interactions, also with the goal of studying the emergent behavior of these systems. While ABMS has been effectively used in many disciplines, many successful models are still run only sequentially. Relying on simple and easy-to-use languages such as NetLogo limits the possibility to benefit from more effective runtime paradigms, such as speculative Parallel Discrete Event simulation (PDES). In this paper, we discuss a semantically-rich API allowing to implement agent-based Models in a simple and effective way. We also describe the critical points which should be taken into account to implement this API in a speculative PDES environment, to scale up simulations on distributed massively-parallel clusters. We present an experimental assessment showing how our proposal allows to implement complicated interactions with a reduced complexity, while delivering a non-negligible performance increase.

The recent technological advances in computer science have enabled the definition of new modeling paradigms that differ from the classical ones in describing the system in terms of its components or entities. Among them, agent-based Models (ABMs) are gaining more and more popularity thanks to their ability to capture emergent phenomena resulting from the interactions of individual entities. However, ABMs lack a formal definition and precisely defined semantics. To overcome this issue we propose a new method exploiting Petri Nets as a graphical meta-formalism for modeling a system from which an ABM model with clear and well-defined semantics can be automatically derived and simulated. We aim to define a framework, based on a PN formalism, in which a system can be efficiently studied through both agent-based simulation and classical Stochastic one depending on the study goal.

Purchasing activities consume more than half of manufacturing and trading organizations sales capitals. Quality procurement is tied with efficient and highly accurate collection of data needed to purchasing the right material at the right quality from right suppliers. Supply chain management (SCM) consists of complex networks of distributed actors in which the problem of identifying the appropriate suppliers based on specific criteria is strategically important. However, implementation of an autonomous assessment that can incorporate dynamics and uncertainty of the whole supply chain during the assessment period is not addressed in most of the previous research activities. In this paper, a review of the use and development of agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) approach in the supplier selection problem domain is provided. The main focus of this paper is to extract and analyze significant issues related to modeling and simulating supplier selection networks using Multi agent System (MAS) approach. Related research domain is evaluated and synthesized considering six different perspectives. The review also sheds light on the weak points of current research in this area. Also, it illuminates a number of key issues which need to be considered in advancing an agent-based assessment model for future applications in supplier selection problem.

agent based modeling and simulation (ABMS) is considered an effective approach for conducting simulation studies in many fields. In order to develop high quality simulation models, methodological approaches are demanded. In such direction we are moving by proposing a heuristic for the formalization of agent based simulation problems. The proposed heuristic is based on some guidelines developed for identifying the main elements of the problem domain description by analysing verbs and their common taxonomy in grammar.
