In recent years, unconventional emergencies occur frequently, which results in severe harm to our national economy and people's life. The ensuing public panic also caused growing public concern. We take Songhua River water pollution as a case to analyze panic diffusion from an information communication aspect. In this paper we classify information based on its risk characteristic and propose several hypotheses. We further construct an agent-basedsimulation model of public panic diffusion in a social network environment. Public behavior and panic diffusion is simulated and analyzed according to the information announced by the government. Results show great effectiveness that the model can simulate the impact of government actions and give verification of the hypothesis. This model is also helpful for government to predict public panic condition in other similar cases and provide a theoretical basis for government's emergency management.

A systems methodology for generating ordinal preferences from a value system is presented in this paper. The methodology employs value-focused thinking, the analytic hierarchy process, and a variety of methods, such as criteria-satisficing, optimizing, prioritization and weighting, to capture different value judgments. The methodology is operationalized for integration with the graph model for conflict resolution, which facilitates modeling and analysis of strategic conflicts. In applying the proposed methodology, preferences take into account evolving contextual variables in order to simulate participants' responses in a dynamic environment. The effects of different value systems on preferences and resulting conflict dynamics are demonstrated for a theoretical common-pool resources dilemma.

Content delivery networks (CDNs) are currently the most exploited worldwide solution for reliable, scalable and cost-effective delivery of content over the Internet. The development and deployment of new services and components in CDNs should be carried out carefully as they involve huge investments from the CDN providers' perspective. It is therefore necessary to prototype, monitor, and predict the behavior of new CDN services/components in a controlled simulated environment, before and after their final release. As agent-oriented methods, particularly agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS), have demonstrated high effectiveness for the analysis and design of modern complex distributed systems in a wide range of different application domains, this paper proposes an effective approach based on the agent-oriented ELDAMeth methodology for the design and analysis of CDNs. Specifically, an agent-based extensible CDN framework provides high-level programming abstractions and tools that fully support the simulation of different CDN architectures and mechanisms and allow for automatic evaluation of three main CDN performance indices: average user perceived latency, cache hit ratio and utility. The framework currently makes it available agent models for conventional, cooperative and clustered CDN architectures that have been simulated according to a reference simulation scenario. Results clearly show that clustered architectures have the potential to outperform conventional and cooperative architectures on which real CDNs are currently based and that the proposed agent-based framework is effective in modeling and analyzing CDNs. modeling realistic altruism for nonplayer characters (NPCs) is an interesting problem with substantive potential benefits to game creators and players, in the form of more believable game characters and immersive games. An experiment was conducted to investigate how humans would interpret altruistic behavior in artificial agents in a predator/ prey environment. This paper describes an experiment focused on whether human observers would attribute emotional characteristics and motivations to altruistic game agents.

An agent-based model is used to simulate a developing region population, disease burden, health care infrastructure and estimate the impact of resource investment decisions on population health and health care costs. In this approach, the primary agents are individual health care facilities, capturing population characteristics, facility catchment population, and facility diagnostic capacity and strategies. Health facility investment decisions are represented by new hospital placement and capacity in selected jurisdictions. Impact on outcomes is simulated over a time horizon of up to 20 years. Data visualization is applied and used to compare multiple scenarios to help inform public health planning, investment and policy decision-making.

This paper studies the impact of 'herd behavior' consumers in the market on demand of the products. In the duopoly market, two suppliers locate at two end of the line separately, providing an undifferentiated product. The potential consumers are dispersed along the line randomly. Beside those 'rational' consumers who have willing to buy from one of the two suppliers according to transportation cost from their positions to the two suppliers, other 'herd behavior' consumers may ignore the transportation cost, and change their mind to follow the most popular choice. To represent herd behavior of heterogeneous consumers, multi-agentbasedmodeling and simulation is introduced to model and testify the operations of the market. Our numerical results show that 'herd behavior' consumers have a great influence on demand of two suppliers. Moreover, demand can be obviously increased once the first coming consumers are influenced by the supplier through sales efforts.

In the last decade, agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) has been applied to a variety of domains, demonstrating the potential of this technique to advance science, engineering, and policy analysis. However, realizing the full potential of ABMS to find breakthrough research results requires far greater computing capability than is available through current ABMS tools. The Repast for High Performance Computing (Repast HPC) project addresses this need by developing a useful and useable next-generation ABMS system explicitly focusing on larger-scale distributed computing platforms. Repast HPC is intended to smooth the path from small-scale simulations to large-scale distributed simulations through the use of a Logo-like system. This article's contribution is its detailed presentation of the implementation of Repast HPC as a useful and usable framework, a complete ABMS platform developed explicitly for larger-scale distributed computing systems that leverages modern C++ techniques and the ReLogo language.

Festivals in city parks attended by individuals and families are a universal feature of urban life. These venues often have the common attributes of vendors and other obstacles that restrict pedestrian movement through certain areas, as well as fixed number of exits. In this study, the authors build an agent-based model (ABM) that incorporates group cohesion forces into this type of pedestrian egress scenario. The scenario considered was an evacuation of 500 people through a single exit. This allowed an investigation into the use of two different simulated pedestrian's heading updating rules.

The outage of Critical Infrastructures (CI) can have devastating impacts on our society, economic welfare and political stability. One risk that is often encountered in critical infrastructure sectors is its high dependence on ICT components and the complex interdependencies between shared services. Recent cyber attacks (such as Stuxnet, Flame, Gauss) outline the high vulnerability of ICT components which build the foundation of today's Critical Infrastructures. The complexity and fast-changing threat environment pose an enormous challenge for estimating and forecasting the impacts of cyber attacks on such systems. In order to address this challenge, modeling and simulation techniques are used. Especially, agent-based modeling and simulation provides a powerful technique to represent dynamic behavior of various actors. In this paper, we introduce a concept to model and simulate Distributed Denial of Service attacks (DDoS) on critical infrastructures. For representing the interactions and the underlying decisions of the individual agents, we decided to combine agent-based modeling and simulation with game-theoretic elements (such as Anticipation Games). In course of the paper we provide a short motivational example to outline how our approach can be applied in a real world scenario. Furthermore, the architecture of our research prototype is given.
