With the development of power system deregulation and smart metering technologies, price-based demand response (DR) becomes an alternative solution to improving power system reliability and efficiency by adjusting the load profile. In this paper, we simulate an electricity market with DR from different types of commercial buildings by using agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) techniques. We focus on the consumption behavior of commercial buildings with different levels of DR penetration in different market structures. The results indicate that there is a noticeable impact from commercial buildings with price-responsive demand on the electricity market, and this impact differs with different scales of DR participation under different levels of market competitions.

This work comes as a contribution to the efforts that are undergoing within engineering systems community to account for the increased complexity of today's manufacturing or service systems. These systems are becoming more and more complicated due to the increase in the number of elements, interconnections within the system, and necessary integration with other systems. Moreover, through the emphasis on self-organization and considering the multi-stakeholders context and objectives, these systems are crossing the line towards complexity. There is a need for developing a framework to be used in modeling, analysis, and integration of systems that operate in uncertain environments, in which characteristics such as adaptation, self-organization and evolution, or in other words behavior prediction, need to be addressed. The proposed complex enterprise systems framework combines knowledge coming from complex systems science and systems engineering domains, and uses computational intelligence and agent-based systems simulation methodologies. The approach requires computational experience in manipulating large amounts of data and building large-scale simulation models. A significant result to be made possible by this research is that systems may no longer have a fixed, life-cycle long, design based on identified requirements; systems will be engineered to evolve and adapt as needed during the operational phase, while respecting their operational environment constraints.

Current arrival operations in the terminal airspace, designed according to ICAO guidelines to comply with a target level of safety of 10-7 per approach, rely on spatial protection zones and complementing procedures (ICAO Doc. 4444). The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively demonstrate inherent safety margins, which form the basic prerequisite for increasing flight efficiency both economically and ecologically. By means of expert interview, task analyses and experiments on a procedure trainer, human-machine interaction latencies on the flight deck are analyzed as a performance shaping factor and thus a potential driver for collision risk. The effects are studied by means of a sensitivity analysis, performed by coupling our actual-navigation-performance-enhanced collision risk model and agent-based fast-time simulation. The results show that temporal safety margins exist for implementation latencies of advised speed and heading changes alike. For heading changes, the margin is well-defined at 10 seconds. For speed changes, the safety level decreases gradually with human-machine interaction latencies, to become critical between 15 and 20 seconds. Trajectory-based concepts with fewer, but more time-consuming interactions between pilot and airborne IT systems may benefit from these findings.

In this paper, we simulate an electricity market with PHEV penetration by using agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS). We model the PHEV users as agents which have unique decision making processes to plan their daily trips and determine their charging schedules. Moreover, we study the impact of different PHEV penetration levels on the power system. The electricity demand from PHEVs is supplied by the electricity market. based on the simulation model, we observe the PHEV owners' payment and investigate the relation to different market structures.

The core spirit for web 2.0 is collective wisdom (i.e., the contribution of users, and the creation of value through the interaction between users). Social bookmarking sites integrate all kind of contents on the Internet (especially those generated by users), and play the role of pivot between content production and consumption. This paper mainly investigates how the positive/negative feedbacks would impact the quality of the collective wisdom within the autonomous service environments (i.e., the social bookmarking sites). Our research findings show that the performance of social bookmarking sites has a tradeoff between collective filtering (i.e., results of positive feedbacks) and front page update frequency that should be carefully managed for ensuring the good quality in collective wisdom and service performance. Moreover, the negative feedback could also shape the collective wisdom and stabilize the system performance. The research findings are believed to provide some managerial guidelines for web 2.0 sites design and operations.

Today, many of the engineered systems are comprised of a large number of components that interact with each other and have the ability to exhibit emergent behavior thus enabling a system to adapt to changing environments. Using the example of the US power grid as a complex adaptive system, we demonstrate how components in a multi-layered power grid structure dynamically interact, evolve and adapt over time. In our model, electricity regulators strive to balance workload by dynamically adjusting service attributes in response to demand fluctuations. Additionally, they seek to change long-term consumption patterns by providing incentives and social education. Moreover, consumer agents focus on maximizing quantitative and qualitative utilities. By embedding a non-convex optimization model with the agent-based framework we study cooperativeness or competition in the consumers game environment. Our framework allows us to study the behavior of consumers under different control and incentive strategies. We expand model dynamics to include intrinsic environment and control factors. This study also examines circumstances in which agent-based and equilibrium models present similar outcomes or are unable to converge to same results. This method is used to study the robustness of the results, present equilibriums of interoperability equations, and study dynamics of traits.

The modeling of financial risk, whose shortcomings came to the fore during the financial crisis, generally understands risk from the history of prices and returns. However, the state space of risk is not fully revealed from the history of prices and returns. In this dissertation, certain cognitive biases were modeled, and the simulation results were quantitatively characterized to reveal risk not revealed from the history of prices and returns. This contribution adds to the extant literature on the modeling of financial risk by showing how to reveal parts of the state space of risk not revealed from other methods in use today.
