We use agent-based modeling and simulation to fuse data from multiple sources to estimate the state of some system properties. This implies that the real system of interest is modeled and simulated using agent principles. Using Monte-Carlo simulation, we estimate the values of some decision-relevant numerical properties. We use the estimated properties, such as utilization of resources and service levels, as a decision support for a Maintenance Service Provider. Our initial results indicate that this kind of fusion of information sources can improve the understanding of the problem domain (e.g. to what degree some critical properties influence service operations) and also generate a basis for decision-making.

This paper introduces the agent-based Crisis Operations simulation Framework, with its component elements, for studying pedestrian crowd behavior and potential use of police resources for crowd management and safety in the context of an urban crisis situation. agent-based models of both the cognitive, affective pedestrian agents with personality features and the cognitive police agents are presented. An illustrative simulation investigating police coordination to facilitate pedestrian traffic flow in the presence of a small fire event is presented. The detailed pedestrian agent models have been developed using tools of the Crisis Operations framework, as has the geometry of the city area.

In this paper, an agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) approach is used to model the German wholesale electricity market. The spot market prices in the European Energy Exchange (EEX) are studied as the wholesale market prices. Each participant in the market is modeled as an individual rationality-bounded agent whose objective Is to maximize its own profit. By simulating the market clearing process, the interaction among agents is captured. The market clearing price formed by agents' production cost bidding is regarded as the reference marginal cost. The gap between the marginal cost and the real market price is measured as an indicator or possible market power exertion. Various bidding strategies such as physical withholding and economic withholding can be simulated to represent strategic bidding behaviors of the market participants. The preliminary simulation results show that some generation companies (GenCos) are in the position of exerting market power by strategic bidding.

In recent years urban health care has gained more and more concerns. The urban Health Care System (HCS) includes Community Health System (CHS) and Medical Delivery System (MDS). The cooperation between these two systems could make the service more convenient and cost-effective, since cooperation improves effective utilization of recourses. The urban HCS is a complex system and extensively involves human behaviors, so it is not easy, if possible, to model it mathematically, and real experiment is either unpractical or too expensive. We therefore study the patient preference between CHS and MDS, and use agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) as a tool to build an artificial HCS and evaluate the cooperation policy that shares the beds and doctors between CHS and MDS. We find that the access time can be reduced by sharing doctors, and over use of beds can be reduced by sharing beds. The result provides some insights to urban health management. Keywords-health care system;cooperation policy, agent-based modeling and simulation

We present a modeling laboratory, Virtual Laboratory for the simulation and Analysis of Social Group Evolution (ViSAGE), that views the organization of human communities and the experience of individuals in a community as contingent upon on the dynamic properties, or micro-laws, of social groups. The laboratory facilitates the theorization and validation of these properties through an iterative research processes that involves (1) forward simulation experiments, which are used to formalize dynamic group properties, (2) reverse engineering from real data on how the parameters are distributed among individual actors in the community, and (3) grounded research, such as participant observation, that follows specific activities of real actors in a community and determines if, or how well, the micro-laws describe the way choices are made in real world, local settings. In this article we report on the design of ViSAGE. We first give some background to the model. Next we detail each component. We then describe a set of simulation experiments that we used to further design and clarify ViSAGE as a tool for studying emergent properties/phenomena in social networks.

Scheduling decisions in hospitals are often taken in a decentralized way. This means that different specialized hospital units decide autonomously on patient admissions or operating room schedules. In this paper we present an agent-based model for the selection of an optimal mix for patient admissions. Admitting the right mix of patients is important in order to optimize the resource usage and patient throughput. Our model is based on an extensive case analysis, involving data analysis and interviews, conducted in a case study at a large hospital in the Netherlands. We focus on the coordination of different surgical patient types with probabilistic treatment processes involving multiple hospital units. We also consider the unplanned arrival of other patients requiring (partly) the same hospital resources. simulation experiments show the applicability of our agent-based decision support tool. The simulation tool allows for the assessment of resource network usage as a function of different policies for decision making. Furthermore, the tool incorporates a first optimization module for the resource allocation of postoperative care beds.

The traditional supply chain concept is no longer a viable solution for the challenges of global economy. The supply of goods and services is needed faster, with high flexibility in terms of product-types and quantities delivered, and with reliable protection in terms of the flow of materials and data. Real-time control across the organizations in the supply chain, enabled by reliable communication channels, is essential for efficiently responding to the above challenges. Driven by customer demand, forming networks for real-time response, and borrowing characteristics from complex adaptive systems theory, such as self-organization, emergence, and adaptability, the today's supply chains are better portrayed as complex engineered demand network systems. agent-based modeling and simulation approach provides the framework for addressing the demand network objectives through a bottom-up modeling of constituents and inter-agent communication and coordination. All organizations that supply, manufacture, distribute or sell products are equipped with Radio frequency identification capabilities to provide real-time information across the network. All product identification information exchange as well as communication and system-level control is envisioned to be made possible through the use of the future Cyberinfrastructure, an idea that emerged in the last years, of a tightly integrated, planet-wide grid of computing, information, networking and sensor resources.

In this paper, we investigate the adoption of agent-based modeling and simulation to study the interdependencies in critical infrastructures. We propose an approach to model critical infrastructures through agents as well as some guidelines to simulate such complex systems. We adopt UML as modeling language, thus proposing a new way to represent the interdependencies that occur in a complex system composed by different critical infrastructures. Through an example that regards an information system for civic emergency management, we describe our modeling methodology, discuss about the measurements and results that can be gained from the simulation of the complex system, and present the most relevant issues regarding the simulator design and implementation.

We apply agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) to investigate a set of problems in a retail context. Specifically, we are working to understand the relationship between human resource management practices and retail productivity. Despite the fact we are working within a relatively novel and complex domain, it is clear that intelligent agents do offer potential for developing organizational capabilities in the future. Our multi-disciplinary research team has worked with a UK department store to collect data and capture perceptions about operations from actors within departments. based on this case study work, we have built a simulator that we present in this paper. We then use the simulator to gather empirical evidence regarding two specific management practices: empowerment and employee development.
