Logistics, in its most basic definition, is the efficient flow and storage of goods from their creation to their consumption. It is the part of the supply chain process that plans, implements and controls the flow of goods. Increasing production rate and product distribution velocity of warehousing facilities play a vital role in the overall supply chain process and optimizing their storage spaces capacities is one of the major challenges for logistics companies, which aim to lower cost by reducing product storage cost and damage and to improve the environmental performance of their service. Considering all the storage facilities as a single virtual space and pooling "optimally" capabilities between these storage spaces would be the right answer to solve these challenges. Through this paper, we are challenged to figure out new ways to make pooled warehouse's storage process more effective by providing an improved management of storage areas that aims to reach a maximum storage space utilization. This pooled logistics management that provides economic benefits through consolidation and accumulation operations, resembles closely to the pooled management of hosted computer servers in Cloud Computing (CC). based on this similarity, the proposed model intends to adapt resource allocation methods and models, developed in CC environments, and their reuse for optimizing storage space allocation in a Pooled Warehouse (PW) in order to maximize the number of accepted storage requests while keeping the best quality of stored products. After an analytical study, an agent based model and simulator for an intelligent management of PW are presented, and the first simulation results are discussed. A comparison of the different allocation strategies shows that the total number of storage requests rejections differ from one scenario to another.

agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) became an attractive and efficient way to model large-scale complex systems. The use of models always raises the question whether the model is correctly encoded (verification) and accurately represents the real system (validation). However, achieving a sufficiently credible agent-based simulation (ABS) model is still difficult due to weak verification, validation and testing (VV&T) techniques. Moreover, there is no comprehensive and integrated toolkit for VV&T of ABS models that demonstrates that inaccuracies exist and/or which reveals the existing errors in the model. based on this observation, we designed and developed RatKit: a toolkit for ABS models to conduct VV&T. RatKit facilitates the VV&T process of ABMS by providing an integrated environment that allows repeatable and automated execution of ABS tests. This paper presents RatKit in detail and demonstrates its effectiveness by showing its applicability on a simple well-known case study: predator - prey.

Crowd control has been one of the important responsibilities for law enforcement officers. Whether a crowd is formed for political reasons or sporting events, they can turn to be violent, disrupting public peace/order and damaging properties in a public place. Effective and efficient crowd control tactics can keep the safety of both the innocent public and the crowd who are involved with (violent) collective behaviours. In order to devise and test such tactics, a decision support system called SimCrowdControl has been developed using the technique of agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS). The system employs a realistic crowd model developed based on social science research studies. At the early stage of the SimCrowdControl system, simple crowd control tactics were tested against the crowd model by simulating the Vancouver Stanley Cup Riot which happened in 2011. The limitations of the current system and future plans are discussed.

A smart grid is the next generation power grid focused on providing increased reliability and efficiency in the wake of integration of volatile distributed energy resources. For the development of the smart grid, the modeling and simulation infrastructure is an important concern. This study presents an agent-based model for simulating different smart grid frequency control schemes, such as demand response. The model can be used for combined simulation of electrical, communication and control dynamics. The model structure is presented in detail, and the applicability of the model is evaluated with four distinct simulation case examples. The study confirms that an agent-based modeling and simulation approach is suitable for modeling frequency control in the smart grid. Additionally, the simulations indicate that demand response could be a viable alternative for providing primary control capabilities to the smart grid, even when faced with communication constraints. Purpose: Commercial aviation is feasible thanks to the complex socio-technical air transportation system, which involves interactions between human operators, technical systems, and procedures. In view of the expected growth in commercial aviation, significant changes in this socio-technical system are in development both in the USA and Europe. Such a complex socio-technical system may generate various types of emergent behavior, which may range from simple emergence, through weak emergence, up to strong emergence. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that agent-based modeling and simulation allows identifying changed and novel rare emergent behavior in this complex socio-technical system. Methods: An agent based model of a specific operation at an airport has been developed. The specific operation considered is the controlled crossing by a taxiing aircraft of a runway that is in use for controlled departures. The agent-based model includes all relevant human and technical agents, such as the aircraft, the pilots, the controllers and the decision support systems involved. This agent-based model is used to conduct rare event Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Results: The MC simulation results obtained confirm that agent based modeling and simulation of a socio-technical air transportation system allows to identify rare emergent behavior that was not identified through earlier, non-agent-based simulations, including human-in-the-loop simulations of the same operation. A typical example of such emergent behavior is the finding that alerting systems do not really reduce the safety risk. Conclusions: agent based MC simulations of commercial aviation operations has been demonstrated as a viable way to be evaluated regarding rare emergent behaviour. This rare emergent behaviour could not have been found through the more traditional simulation approaches.

Project schedules are essential elements in project planning. The common problem with them is that the initial project schedules are typically too rigid to reflect the surrounding uncertainties. For this reason we have developed an enhanced project schedule model whose design is simulation-based and incorporates a high degree of uncertainty that typically surrounds project developments. Enhanced project schedules (EPS) are dynamic and allow for pre-calculated beneficial interventions when uncertainties arise. This implies that they feature decision support too. The high degree of uncertainty is incorporated by providing, in addition to the initial project schedule, a set of remedial actions recommendations. Identifying the appropriate set of remedial actions that supports meeting project goals is challenging and carried out through simulation. To enhance the simulation processes that facilitate the design of the EPS and better reflect the uncertainty introduced by the human factor, we propose to use agent-based simulation, for which in this paper we provide the basic framework. The idea is to model tasks, teams and manager as agents with properties and interactions that would more realistically model their dynamic nature. We believe that this will add another dimension to how project schedules are viewed and analyzed. In addition, it will enable more realistic modeling of project schedules and allow for higher degree of dynamics in the generated enhanced project schedules. In this paper we formally define the framework for agent-based modeling and simulation of enhanced project schedules.

Due to the complex nature and numerous interacting factors that contributes to the increased vulnerability of supply chains, traditional methods have been found to be inadequate for Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM). agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS), an agent-oriented approach to model and simulate complex adaptive systems, represents a recent development in supply chain planning that has been regarded highly appropriate for studying risk management [1-4]. The objective of this paper is to provide a multi-perspective survey of the state-of-the-art agent based modeling and simulation approaches for SCRM.

This paper describes agent-based models of epidemics dynamics, willingly simplified with the goal not to predict the evolution of the epidemics, but to explain the underlying mechanisms in an interactive way. They allow to compare screening prioritization strategies, and vaccination priority strategies, on a virtual population. The models are implemented in Netlogo in two simulators, published online at to let people experiment. This paper reports on model design, implementation, and experimentations. We have compared screening strategies to assess the epidemics versus control it by quarantining infectious people;and we have compared vaccinating older people with more risk factors, versus younger people with more social contacts.

In the paper we present results of our research related to the application of the method of declarative description of knowledge possessed by people making decisions, characteristic for rule-based systems in ABMS. The purpose of this study is to examine whether, based on knowledge built on declarations of people, it is possible to create an adequate rule-based model of agents. It has been established that only about 60% of respondents take decisions in accordance with the previously declared preferences. Nevertheless, in our opinion, the rule-based approach to the agent behavior modeling can provide good results by introducing a random factor in decision-making rules.
