Currently, agent-based computing is an active research area, and great efforts have been made towards the agent-oriented programming both from a theoretical and practical view. However, most of them assume that there is no uncertainty in agents＇ mental state and their environment. In other words, under this assumption agent developers are just allowed to specify how his agent acts when the agent is 100% sure about what is true/false. In this paper, this unrealistic assumption is removed and a new agent-oriented probabilistic logic programming language is proposed, which can deal with uncertain information about the world. The programming language is based on a combination of features of probabilistic logic programming and imperative programming.

Event loops are a main control architecture to implement actors. In this paper we first analyse the impact that this choice has on the design of actor-based concurrent programs. Then, we discuss control loops as the main architecture adopted to implement agents, and we frame them as an extension of event loops effective to improve the programming of autonomous components that need to integrate both reactive and proactive behaviors, in a modular way. The number of programming languages is large and steadily increasing. However, little structured information and empirical evidence is available to help software engineers assess the suitability of a language for a particular development project or software architecture. We argue that these shortages are partly due to a lack of high-level, objective programming language feature assessment criteria: existing advice to practitioners is often based on ill-defined notions of 'paradigms' [3, p. xiii] and 'orientation', while researchers lack a shared common basis for generalisation and synthesis of empirical results. This paper presents a feature model constructed from the programmer's perspective, which can be used to precisely compare general-purpose programming languages in the actor-oriented, agent-oriented, functional, object-oriented, and procedural categories. The feature model is derived from the existing literature on general concepts of programming, and validated with concrete mappings of well-known languages in each of these categories. The model is intended to act as a tool for both practitioners and researchers, to facilitate both further high-level comparative studies of programming languages, and detailed investigations of feature usage and efficacy in specific development contexts. The AGEREI workshop(1) has been organized with the ACM SPLASH conference since 2011. The workshop has brought together researchers in programming systems, languages, and applications based on actors, active/concurrent objects, agents, and more broadly, high-level programming paradigms which facilitate decentralized control. The goal of the workshop is to promote use of such paradigms to address the problem of developing software for complex, real-world applications. The AGERE workshop is a follow on to workshops on Object-based Concurrent programming which were organized twenty years earlier in conjunction with OOPSLA [1-3]. In the last two decades, concurrency and distribution have become part of everyday programming. In this context, the objective of AGEREI is to foster the development and adoption of high-level programming paradigms embracing concurrency at the core of the developed abstractions and constructs. This special issue collects extended and enhanced versions of selected papers from AGERE! 2011 and 2012 which underwent additional review cycles. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The structure and workflows of an organization can be modelled by business agents following a set of roles. The agents act according to the established rules, and can interact in order to achieve the organizational objectives. Business processes described by means of role-activity diagrams can be formalized and implemented as multiagent systems. In this paper we compare two implementations of business agents, in Jason and F#, and discuss the features of these programming languages with respect to the problem under analysis. We address business processes both from the perspective of individual agents and rules, and from the perspective of a generic knowledge-based business agent architecture.

In this paper we propose a model for designing Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) agents under the principles of modularity. We aim to encapsulate agent functionalities expressed as BDI abstractions into independent, reusable and easier to maintain units of code, which agents can dynamically load. The general idea of our approach is to exploit the notion of namespace to organize components such as beliefs, plans and goals. This approach allowed us to address the name-collision problem, providing interface and information hiding features for modules. Although the proposal is suitable for agent-oriented programming languages in general, we present concrete examples in Jason.

An intriguing and relatively new metaphor in the programming community is that of an intelligent agent. The idea is to view programs as intelligent agents acting on our behalf. By using the metaphor of intelligent agents the programmer views programs as entities which have a mental state consisting of beliefs and goals. The computational behaviour of an agent is explained in terms of the decisions the agent makes on the basis of its mental state. It is assumed that this way of looking at programs may enhance the design and development of complex computational systems. To support this new style of programming, we propose the agent programming language 3APL. 3APL has a clear and formally defined semantics. The operational semantics of the language is defined by means of transition systems. 3APL is a combination of imperative and logic programming. From imperative programming the language inherits the full range of regular programming constructs, including recursive procedures, and a notion of state-based computation. States of agents, however, are belief or knowledge bases, which are different from the usual variable assignments of imperative programming. From logic programming, the language inherits the proof as computation model as a basic means of computation for querying the belief base of an agent. These features are well-understood and provide a solid basis for a structured agent programming language. Moreover, on top of that 3APL agents use so-called practical reasoning rules which extend the familiar recursive rules of imperative programming in several ways. Practical reasoning rules can be used to monitor and revise the goals of an agent, and provide an agent with reflective capabilities. Applying the metaphor of intelligent agents means taking a design stance. From this perspective, a program is taken as an entity with a mental state, which acts pro-actively and reactively, and has reflective capabilities. agent programming languages like agentSpeak(L) - and Jason, as its modern extension/implementation - have features that make them interesting for software development and general-purpose programming, besides AI problems. A main one is the level of abstraction, that eases the design and development of concurrent, reactive, distributed applications. At the same time, being not developed for general-purpose programming and software development in mind, they typically miss elements that are important for that purpose. These weaknesses can negatively impact on their adoption beyond the agent-oriented programming community. Accordingly, in this paper we discuss some features extending the basic model provided by agentSpeak(L)/Jason, with the purpose of improving its adoption for programming and software development. Such extensions are shown in practice using a Jason extension called Jona.

This article presents experiences of teachers from Lulea University of Technology when enhancing the teaching approach and depth of an undergraduate course on network programming and distributed applications. During the trial run of the course in the fall of 2013 agent-oriented programming and cloud technologies were married to provide students an exciting practical scenario and capability to test the performance of truly large scale distributed systems under extremely high traffic loads.

Internet-of-Things (IoT) is one of the most important new paradigms and technological advances in the realm of the soon-to-be-present-in-every-household (and nearly every business), Internet-powered cyber-physical systems of this decade and likely years to come. We are interested in the distributed intelligence, agent-based programming and multi-agent systems aspects of what it will take to enable the reliable, secure, inter-operable and human-friendly Next-Generation IoT, and in particular, Internet-of-agents (IoA) as the IoT's software and computational intelligence foundation. Several key software design and computational intelligence aspects of IoT/IoA are discussed in this paper. We first address suitable programming abstractions for the software agents that would provide IoT's inter-operability, enabling different users, devices and platforms to effectively communicate and coordinate with each other. We then review some desiderata for the Next-Generation (NG) IoT middleware design. To address cyber-security for IoT holistically, we outline some elements of computational intelligence that would enable the self-healing and self-recovery capabilities of the NG IoT. We argue that the design of NG cyber-defense, self-healing and self-recovering mechanisms could greatly benefit from exploring paradigms from biology - in particular, from the immune systems of living organisms. If such highly adaptable self-healing capabilities were built into the NG IoT, future cyber-attacks would cause much less disruption to the infrastructure and the end-users than what was the case with some recent cyber-attacks on the present-day IoT.
