agent-based modeling (ABM) has become a major approach to promote computational thinking and complex systems thinking in K-12 education. However, agent-based programming (ABP), the computational foundation of ABM, is less defined and discussed in previous literature. Summarizing previous studies around ABP from computer science and education, we argued for the potential benefits of introducing ABP to youth. Rooted in the interest development theory, we presented the design of a scaffolded agent-based programming space, the Pocketworld Playground (POP), that aims to engage out-of-school online young learners through developing their interest in ABP. The POP was built in Turtle Universe (TU), the mobile incarnation of NetLogo. Using a mixed-methods approach to analyze log data and artifacts created by learners, we found that POP successfully engaged learners with ABP practices;helped develop situational and individual interest;and contributed to TU's emerging online community. Finally, we discussed design lessons that could benefit other online learning designers.

Computational thinking and scientific modeling are essential STEM education practices, and visual block-based programming interfaces offer new opportunities to make coding accessible in elementary school science. The EcoMOD research project blends computational modeling and ecosystem science learning through a 3D virtual forest ecosystem combined with a 2D visual block-based programming tool, for 3rd and 4th grade students (ages 8-10). During a 14-day curriculum, students explore an immersive virtual forest ecosystem, and program agent-based computational models of a beaver building a dam. As students run their program and watch their beaver agent go through the steps of building a dam, they observe the emergent outcomes as their programmed model impacts other elements of the ecosystem. The final curriculum was implemented with 7 teachers and approximately 150 students.A scaffolded coding interface provides domain-specific programming primitives, such as "move toward tree," "bite tree," and "pick up log." Conditional expressions include "if", "if/otherwise," and "repeat until," and can be nested. The interface provides a virtual 2D sandbox to test and edit programs, visual feedback during code execution, and debugging supports. Using design-based research methods, different sets of primitives and functionality were tested with students. Analysis of computational models constructed by students uses logfile data of programming activities over multiple class periods, as well as screen capture video of focus students. The poster will include design insights for the agent-based modeling language, including choices of primitives, conditionals, and scaffolding.

Distributed Online Algorithms for the agent Migration Problem in WSNs

The mobile agent paradigm has been adopted by several systems in the area of wireless sensor networks as it enables a flexible distribution and placement of application components on nodes, at runtime. Most agent placement and migration algorithms proposed in the literature, assume that the communication rates between agents remain stable for a sufficiently long time to amortize the migration costs. Then, the problem is that frequent changes in the application-level communication may lead to several non-beneficial agent migrations, which may actually increase the total network cost, instead of decreasing it. To tackle this problem, we propose two distributed algorithms that take migration decisions in an online fashion, trying to deal with fluctuations in agent communication. The first algorithm is more of theoretical value, as it assumes infinite storage to keep information about the message exchange history of agents, while the second algorithm is a refined version that works with finite storage and limited information. We describe these algorithms in detail, and provide proofs for their competitive ratio vs. an optimal oracle. In addition, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms for different parameter settings through a series of simulated experiments, also comparing their results with those achieved by an optimal static placement that is computed with full (a posteriori) knowledge of the execution scenarios. Our theoretical and experimental results are a strong indication for the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

A PDES/STEP-based model and system for concurrent integrated design and assembly planning

Product data exchange and interfacing between different CAD/CAM systems are of great importance to the development of concurrent integrated design environments and computer integrated manufacturing systems. This paper presents a STEP-based method and system for concurrent integrated design and assembly planning. An integrated object model for mechanical systems and assemblies is first defined by a hierarchy of structure, geometry and feature. The structure is represented as a component-connector or joint multi-level graph with both hierarchical functional and assembly relations. These hierarchical relation models are then used for uniformly describing their causal relations both for assembly level and feature based single part level. The generic product assembly model is organized according to STEP, using mostly the entities of integrated resources and partly self-defined entities, which are necessary for design and assembly planning. based on the generic product assembly model, STEP-based strategies and agent concepts are used for agent-based concurrent integration of design and assembly planning. A prototype system, consisting of a CAD system, a product modeling system, an assembly planning system, and an assembly evaluation system is developed, in which product data can be exchanged between these subsystems. Details about the implementation of the system are addressed. The integrated design and assembly planning system can support the introduction of a new product. The results of assembly planning are feedback to the stage of assembly design to improve on the design. A case study is carried out for assembly-oriented design of a gearbox, to illustrate the proposed approach and to validate the developed system. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Natural and anthropic disasters can affect every city and urban area. Urbanists, engineers and decision makers must work towards reducing risks to the population in case a disaster occurs. This paper proposes a new methodology based on algorithmically calculated risk scenarios and on human behavioral simulation models that aims to evaluate and eventually improve crisis management and pre-disaster planning at the urban level The approach is based on GAMA, an agent-oriented simulation tool which allows the formulation of integrated models utilizing multiple modeling paradigms, the exploration of parameter space, the calibration of several models, and the performance of virtual experiments through the integration of vector and raster geographic data. The objective of the proposed methodology is to devise a platform that can be used to: i) validate, using simulation, the qualities of the urban structures and characteristics of city components with respect to their capacity to respond to a catastrophic event, and ii) more importantly, to define new urban design strategies oriented toward safety with the final goal of improving the resilience of our cities. The article provides the preliminary findings from a case study on which the approach under development was applied.

In this chapter, we report two studies in which 3rd- and 4th-grade students used a distributed computing infrastructure (ViMAP-Tangible) in order to collaboratively invent "mathematical machines" for generating geometric shapes. ViMAP-Tangible combines the ViMAP visual programming language with a distributed computing infrastructure, in which students collaboratively control the behavior of a virtual agent using both mechanical devices and virtual algorithms. The curricular activities integrate engineering practices such as user-centered design;agent-based computer programming;mathematical reasoning about multiplication, rates, and geometry;and physical science concepts central to learning Newtonian mechanics. In Study 1, we investigate the key affordances of such a distributed computing environment for learning Integrated STEM, and identify the relationships between the various elements of students' physical constructions and computational models, and their STEM learning outcomes. Study 2 is a deeper investigation of the effect of iterative user testing on the refinement of children's designs and their STEM learning.

In this paper we propose a very user-friendly method for programming multi-agent systems. We use the well known visual programming library Blockly from Google. With this library the behaviour of agents can by programmed intuitively even by those not skilled in programming. We demonstrate this idea using an agent-based simulator named eVolutus, designed and implemented for conducting large scale ecological and evolutionary experiments.

Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) have long been aproposed solution towards effective automated manufacturing withimproved cost, time, efficiency and resource flexibilities. The twomajor factors towards the development of an efficient FMS aremachine flexibility (i.e. the systems latitude towards changedproduct type and order of operations), and routing flexibility(i.e. the ability to use different machines or group of machines toperform similar operations on a manufacturing part). These twofactors can be addressed by selecting an optimized schedule ofmanufactured products. In this research, the problem of selectingan optimized schedule and process plan is addressed through machineactivity based dynamic process plan generation using priority-basedprocess planning network and simulation of the selected processplans to make an assessment of their performance. A market orienteddistributed agent based prototype architecture of FMS has beendeveloped using the Java agent Development Environment (JADE), aJava based middleware for multi- agent systems, capable ofexecuting manufacturing tasks disintegrated into modular sub-tasksthrough intelligent agents. This agent-based model communicateswith the simulation module through object oriented data *** is conducted on the various process plans generated outof the process planning network for multiple parts produced by theprocess planning network agent through java interface. Thesimulation model of the FMS has been implemented in AnyLogic. Theprocess simulation agent executes simulation using process plandata to record statistics of performance and measure effectivenessof the process plans. The performance of this system is comparedwith results obtained from discrete event simulation of processplans generated through feature based heuristics on a monolithicFMS. Solving Twisty Puzzles Using Parallel Q-learning

There has been a recent trend of teaching agents to solve puzzles and play games using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) which was brought by the success of AlphaGo. While this method has given some truly groundbreaking results and it is very computationally intensive. This paper evaluates the feasibility of solving Combinatorial Optimization Problems such as Twisty Puzzles using Parallel Q-Learning (PQL). We propose a method using Constant Share-Reinforcement Learning (CS-RL) as a more resource optimized approach and measure the impact of sub-goals built using human knowledge. We attempt to solve three puzzles, the 2x2x2 Pocket Rubik's Cube, the Skewb and the Pyraminx with and without sub-goals based on popular solving methods used by humans and compare their results. Our agents are able to solve these puzzles with a 100% success rate by just a few hours of training, much better than previous DRL based agents that require large computational time. Further, the proposed approach is compared with Deep Learning based solution for 2x2x2 Rubik's Cube and observed higher success rate.

Computational agents based on the BDI framework typically rely on abstract plans and plan refinement to reach a degree of autonomy in dynamic environments: agents are provided with the ability to selecthow-to achieve their goals by choosing from a set of options. In this work we focus on a related, yet under-studied feature:abstract goals. These constructs refer to the ability of agents to adopt goals that are not fully grounded at the moment of invocation, refining them only when and where needed: the ability to selectwhat-to (concretely) achieve at run-time. We present a preference-based approach to goal refinement, defining preferences based on extendedCeteris Paribus Networks (CP-Nets) for an agentSpeak(L)-like agent programming language, and mapping the established CP-Nets logic and algorithms to guide the goal refinement step. As a technical contribution, we present an implementation of this method that solely uses a Prolog-like inference engine of the agent's belief-base to reason about preferences, thus minimally affecting the decision-making mechanisms hard-coded in the agent framework.
