Modeling NASA swarm-based systems: using agent-oriented software engineering and formal methods

The need to collect new data and perform new science is causing the complexity of NASA missions to continually increase. This complexity needs to be controlled via new technological advancements and balanced with a reduction in mission and operation costs. Planned and hypothesized missions involve self-management, biological-inspiration based on swarms, and autonomous operation as a means of achieving these goals. We consider a tailored software engineering approach to developing such systems based on agent-oriented software engineering and formal methods. We report on advances in modeling, implementing, and testing NASA swarm-based concept missions.

agent-based computing is a promising approach for developing applications in complex domains. However, despite the great deal of research in the area, a number of challenges still need to be faced (i) to make agent-based computing a widely accepted paradigm in software engineering practice, and (ii) to turn agent-oriented software abstractions into practical tools for facing the complexity of modern application areas. In this paper, after a short introduction to the key concepts of agent-based computing ( as they pertain to software engineering), we characterise the emerging key issues in multiagent systems (MASs) engineering. In particular, we show that such issues can be analysed in terms of three different "scales of observation'', i.e., in analogy with the scales of observation of physical phenomena, in terms of micro, macro, and meso scales. Based on this characterisation, we discuss, for each scale of observation, what are the peculiar engineering issues arising, the key research challenges to be solved, and the most promising research directions to be explored in the future.

The key role of environment as a first-class abstraction in the engineering of MAS (multi-agent systems) is today generally acknowledged in the MAS community. However, the support for the notion of environment in today AOSE (agent-oriented software engineering) methodologies is still either absent, weak, or incomplete at best. In this paper we first review, classify, and compare existing AOSE methodologies according to their support for the notion of MAS environment. Then we suggest a general approach for extending existing AOSE methodologies toward full environment support.

Multi-agent systems (MAS) architectures are gaining popularity over traditional ones for building open, distributed, and evolving software required by today's corporate IT applications such as e-business systems, Web services, or enterprise knowledge bases. Since the fundamental concepts of multi-agent systems are social and intentional rather than object, functional, or implementation-oriented, the design of MAS architectures can be eased by using social patterns. They are detailed agent-oriented design idioms to describe MAS architectures composed of autonomous agents that interact and coordinate to achieve their intentions, like actors in human organizations. This article presents social patterns and focuses on a framework aimed to gain insight into these patterns. The framework can be integrated into agent-oriented software engineering methodologies used to build MAS. We consider the Broker social pattern to illustrate the framework. An overview of the mapping from system architectural design (through organizational architectural styles), to system detailed design (through social patterns), is presented with a data integration case study. The automation of creating design patterns is also discussed.

The agent-oriented software engineering research community is advocating the agent-based approach for the design of distributed systems. But currently, there is a substantial gap between the massive number of publications reporting advantages of agents, and the relatively small number of successful large applications. We present an agent-based cluster server application together with the analysis of advantages and disadvantages of the agent-based version compared to the non agent-based version of functionally similar cluster server application. Obtained experience is analyzed from the viewpoints of designers, developers and users. Observations confirm several previously published advantages of the agent-based approach and implementation; yet reveal some less familiar disadvantages as well. Overall, we argue that agent-based approach provide reasonable benefits already at this stage, while we lack further agent-based research.

Many of the issues addressed with multi-agent approaches, such as distributed coordination and self-organization, are now becoming part of industrial and business systems. However, Multiagent Systems (MASs) are still not widely adopted in industry owing to the lack of a connection between MAS and software engineering. Since 2000, there is an effort to bridge this gap and to produce software engineering techniques for agent-based systems that guide the processes of design, development and maintenance. In Brazil, agent-oriented software engineering (AOSE) was first investigated by the research group in the software engineering Laboratory (LES) at PUC-Rio, which after one decade of study in this area has built an AOSE community. This paper presents the history of AOSE at LES by discussing the sub-areas of MAS software engineering research and development that have been focus of the LES research group. We give examples of relevant results and present a subset of the extensive literature the group has produced during the last decade. We also report how we faced the challenges that emerged from our research by organizing and developing a research community at the intersection of software engineering, programming and MASs with a concern for scalability of solutions. To integrate model transformation technology in agent-oriented software engineering is helpful to improve the quality and efficiency of agent-based software development, and therefore to make AOSE to be widely adopted by researchers and practitioners in software engineering community. This paper integrates model transformation technology into an agent-oriented methodology ODAM that is based on organization metaphor and proposed for complex adaptive systems. The model transformation consists of two steps: from platform-independent models to platform-specific models, from platform-specific models to code. The transformation algorithms in each phase are designed. A software tool that implements the algorithms has been developed as a part of agent-oriented supporting environment.

The state-of-the-art of agent-oriented software engineering (AOSE) is insufficiently reflected in the state-of-practice in developing complex distributed systems. This paper discusses software engineering (SE) areas that have not been widely addressed in the context of AOSE, leading to a lack of mechanisms that support the development of Multi-agent Systems (MASs) based on traditional SE principles, such as modularity, reusability and maintainability. This discussion is based on an exploratory study of the development of a family of buyer agents following the belief-desire-intention model and using a software Product Line architecture. Based on the discussion presented in this paper, we hope to encourage the AOSE community to address particular SE issues on the development of MAS that have not yet been (widely) considered.

Problem-solving methods (PSM) are abstract structures that describe specific reasoning processes employed to solve a set of similar problems. We envisage that off-the-shelf PSMs can assist in the development of agent-oriented solutions, not only as reusable and extensible components that software engineers employ for designing agent architecture solutions, but just as importantly as a set of runtime capabilities that agents themselves dynamically employ in order to solve problems. This chapter describes PSMs for agent-oriented software engineering (AOSE) that address interaction-dependent problem-solving such as negotiation or cooperation. An extension to an AOSE methodology MOBMAS is proposed whereby PSMs are integrated in the software development phases of MAS Organization Design, Internal Design, and Interaction Design. In this way, knowledge engineering drives the development of agent-oriented systems.

Numerous agent-oriented methodologies that offer a rich pool of resources to support developers of agent-based systems have been proposed. However, the use of existing methodologies in industrial settings is still limited due to the large volume of methodologies, diversity of covered scopes, ambiguity in concepts, and lack of maturity. This makes it difficult for agent technology practitioners to choose the appropriate methodology that best fits their given development context. To eliminate such agent-based development bottleneck, it is important to introduce suitable methods for evaluating, comparing, and classifying agent-oriented methodologies in order to leverage their usage among practitioners. Having systems to evaluate methodologies can effectively help developers better understand existing methodologies, realize their benefits, outline their pros and cons. and assist practitioners with selecting the best-fit methodology for a specific agent-based project. In response, this paper proposes a novel criteria-based evaluation that is influenced by software engineering practices to assess and compare agent-oriented methodologies. The proposed evaluation is derived from the software engineering body of knowledge (SWEBOK) and provides a simplified method to assess the coverage degree of an agent-oriented methodology with respect to major software knowledge areas such as the requirements and testing phases. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed evaluation by applying it to three agent-oriented methodologies (PASSI, MaSE, and Prometheus) in the software engineering requirements and testing phases.
