Gas pipeline will cause leakage accidents due to corrosion, aging, third-party damage and other reasons. Gas pipeline leakage will directly cause energy waste, environmental pollution and economic losses. So in the process of operation and management of gas pipeline, it is necessary to timely detect the occurrence of leakage accidents, determine the location of leakage, and judge the extent of leakage. Based on the theory of pipeline fluid dynamics, the transient flow model of direct gas pipeline is established, and the leakage detection scheme of direct gas pipeline is proposed. The common measurable operating parameters at both ends of the engineering pipeline are summarized into two types of boundaries, A and B, and the solution methods of the transient flow model are given respectively. Combined with the experimental data, the leakage detection of gas straight pipeline is analyzed by example. © 2023 IEEE.

Ultrahigh Sensing Performance: Coresponse and Differentiation of Ethyl Acetate and Its Byproducts in Fe-Ce-O Interfacial Sensor

Accurately detecting low concentrations of ethyl acetate (EA) holds promise for the early screening of rectal and gastric cancer. The primary challenges lie in achieving a high response at parts per billion level concentration and ensuring high selectivity. This study focuses on designing Fe-Ce-O bimetallic oxides with doping and heterogeneous interfaces, which exhibit outstanding redox properties and highly enhanced ability of the adsorption and activation of both O-2 and EA molecules. Benefiting from the violent reaction between EA and the adsorbed oxygen species, the sensor achieves an ultrahigh ethyl acetate sensing response of more than 500,000 at 200 ppm concentration, along with an ultrafast recovery rate (<5 s). In experiments, the response can reach 4.8 even at an extremely low concentration of 10 ppb. Special attention is given to the interfacial chemical reactions through in situ DRIFTS during the sensing process. We propose for the first time that the produced intermediate byproducts (acetaldehyde, ethyl alcohol, acetic acid, and formic acid) coresponse on this sensor, contributing to its ultrahigh sensing response. Furthermore, both EA and the byproducts are effectively classified using linear discriminant analysis with 95% accuracy. This work is expected to elucidate the interfacial sensing mechanisms, particularly the contributions of derived byproducts to the sensor's response, and to propose a novel idea for designing high-performance sensors.

The ability of Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate high-quality text and code has fuelled their rise in popularity. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate the potential of LLMs within the realm of optimization algorithms by integrating them into STNWeb. This is a web-based tool for the generation of Search Trajectory Networks (STNs), which are visualizations of optimization algorithm behavior. Although visualizations produced by STNWeb can be very informative for algorithm designers, they often require a certain level of prior knowledge to be interpreted. In an attempt to bridge this knowledge gap, we have incorporated LLMs, specifically GPT-4, into STNWeb to produce extensive written reports, complemented by automatically generated plots, thereby enhancing the user experience and reducing the barriers to the adoption of this tool by the research community. Moreover, our approach can be expanded to other tools from the optimization community, showcasing the versatility and potential of LLMs in this field.

An adaptive helper and equivalent objective evolution strategy for constrained optimization

The matrix adaptation evolution strategy is a simplified covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy with reduced computational cost. Using it as a search engine, several algorithms have been recently proposed for constrained optimization and have shown excellent performance. However, these algorithms require the simultaneous application of multiple techniques to handle constraints, and also require gradient information. This makes them inappropriate for handling non-differentiable functions. This paper proposes a new matrix adaption evolutionary strategy for constrained optimization using helper and equivalent objectives. The method optimizes two objectives but with no need for special handling of infeasible solutions and without gradient information. A new mechanism is designed to adaptively adjust the weights of the two objectives according to the convergence rate. The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using computational experiments on the IEEE CEC 2017 Constrained Optimization Competition benchmarks. Experimental results demonstrate that it outperforms current state-ofthe-art evolutionary algorithms. Furthermore, this paper provides sufficient conditions for the convergence of helper and equivalent objective evolutionary algorithms and proves that using helper objectives can reduce the likelihood of premature convergence.

A Low-Rank Approximation for MDPs via Moment Coupling

We introduce a framework to approximate Markov decision processes (MDPs) that stands on two pillars: (i) state aggregation, as the algorithmic infrastructure, and (ii) central-limit-theorem-type approximations, as the mathematical underpinning of optimality guarantees. The theory is grounded in recent work by Braverman et al. (2020) that relates the solution of the Bellman equation to that of a partial differential equation (PDE) where, in the spirit of the central limit theorem, the transition matrix is reduced to its local first and second moments. Solving the PDE is not required by our method. Instead, we construct a "sister" (controlled) Markov chain whose two local transition moments are approximately identical with those of the focal chain. Because of this moment matching, the original chain and its sister are coupled through the PDE, a coupling that facilitates optimality guarantees. Embedded into standard soft aggregation algorithms, moment matching provides a disciplined mechanism to tune the aggregation and disaggregation probabilities. Computational gains arise from the reduction of the effective state space from N to N12+e is as one might intuitively expect from approximations grounded in the central limit theorem.

Investigation of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy potential in cotton fiber micronaire measurement and distribution

Cotton micronaire is an essential fiber quality attribute that characterizes both fiber maturity and fineness components. Micronaire and other attributes are measured on fiber lint routinely in laboratories under controlled environmental conditions following a well-established high-volume instrument protocol. In this study, the attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, characterizing fundamental group vibrations in fiber cellulose from 4000 to 400 cm-1, and using an attenuated total reflection device, was explored for fiber micronaire assessment, especially for seed cotton locule fibers that were mingled with nonlint materials, and varied in fiber maturity within a naturally variable sample. Partial least squares multivariate regression models and the algorithmic infrared maturity approach were developed and then applied to predict micronaire values of validation samples and independent seed cotton samples for comparison. Unlike partial least squares models that showed worse in the coefficient of determination, bias, and percentage of samples within the 95% agreement range for independent samples than for validation samples, the algorithmic infrared maturity approach indicated a similarity in the coefficient of determination, bias, and percentage of samples within the 95% agreement range between the validation samples and independent samples. In particular, the algorithmic infrared maturity approach avoided the need to re-calibrate the model with new samples. Therefore, the development of a robust and effective Fourier transform infrared technique combined with the infrared maturity approach for rapid laboratory micronaire assessment and distribution demonstrated a great potential for its extension to the early micronaire testing in remote/breeding locations, and also to regular cotton fibers, processed cotton yarns and fabrics.

Investigation of fiber maturity and crystallinity information in Upland seed cottons by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

Cotton fiber maturity has been determined by cross-sectional image analysis (IA), advanced fiber information system (AFIS), and Cottonscope methods on cotton lint. These methods have reported the results as average maturity and maturity distribution in a sample, through measuring the fibers in the ways of either individual fiber cross-section or longitude of several sub-samples. Previous studies have shown good agreement in maturity for well-prepared samples among these methods, although AFIS is observed to be less sensitive. As a different approach, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy was proposed to measure fiber maturity (M-IR) at bundle fiber level. Extending fiber maturity measurement into seed cotton, the FT-IR method might be an option considering such factors as essential cotton seed and visible trash removal, measuring system availability and speed, and also sub-sampling representation in a naturally variable sample. A comparison of fiber M-IR average in seed cottons with AFIS maturity ratio (M-AFIS) in ginned cotton fibers exhibited a general trend of increasing M-AFIS with M-IR. On the basis of M-IR value, 3-M-IR (low-, mid-, and high-) fiber classification analysis implied the distinctions within seed cottons having close M-IR average, and among the same cultivar grown at different conditions. Additionally, cultivars with a similar maturity distribution varied in fiber crystallinity (CIIR) distribution, and vice versa.

Decalf: A Directed, Effectful Cost-Aware Logical Framework

We present decalf, a directed, effectful cost-aware logical framework for studying quantitative aspects of functional programs with effects. Like calf, the language is based on a formal phase distinction between the extension and the intension of a program, its pure behavior as distinct from its cost measured by an effectful step-counting primitive. The type theory ensures that the behavior is unaffected by the cost accounting. Unlike calf, the present language takes account of effects, such as probabilistic choice and mutable state. This extension requires a reformulation of calf's approach to cost accounting: rather than rely on a "separable" notion of cost, here a cost bound is simply another program. To make this formal, we equip every type with an intrinsic preorder, relaxing the precise cost accounting intrinsic to a program to a looser but nevertheless informative estimate. For example, the cost bound of a probabilistic program is itself a probabilistic program that specifies the distribution of costs. This approach serves as a streamlined alternative to the standard method of isolating a cost recurrence and readily extends to higher-order, effectful programs. The development proceeds by first introducing the decalf type system, which is based on an intrinsic ordering among terms that restricts in the extensional phase to extensional equality, but in the intensional phase reflects an approximation of the cost of a program of interest. This formulation is then applied to a number of illustrative examples, including pure and effectful sorting algorithms, simple probabilistic programs, and higher-order functions. Finally, we justify decalf via a model in the topos of augmented simplicial sets.

The Todini formulation is effectively a type of Q-H equation formulation and it has an extremely efficient approach to the inversion of the Jacobian matrix by partitioning the governing equations in a smart way. The advantage of the Todini formulation is that the Jacobian matrices are symmetric. The aim of this paper is to study the hydraulic calculation principle and analyze the relationship between physical parameters and hydraulic calculation for each step. The comprehensive resistance factor(r) is affected by the loss coefficient along the tracks(lambda), and the loss coefficient along the tracks(lambda) is affected by the Reynolds number(Re), the Reynolds number(Re) is affected by the kinematic viscosity(v), and the kinematic viscosity(v) is affected by the temperature(T). The coupling of hydraulic characteristics and thermal properties of the fluid can be got by modifying the physical parameters, and this article provided evidences for the further study.

Search Trajectory Networks (STNs) serve as a tool for visualizing algorithm behavior within the realm of optimization problems. Despite their user-friendly nature, challenges arise in obtaining interpretable plots, for example, in the case of optimization problems with large solutions or many dimensions. To address this, we have introduced a new search space partitioning strategy utilizing hierarchical agglomerative clustering. This enhanced strategy, now available in STNWeb, the web version of STNs, produces plots that are easier to interpret than those produced by existing search space partitioning strategies. This facilitates an improved understanding of algorithm performance in complex scenarios.
