We present results for planar manipulation of a single drop of magnetic nano-particles (a ferrofluid) in a liquid by feedback control of an array of electromagnets. Control design is based on a first-principles physical model of the magnetic fields, the resulting magnetic forces, and opposing viscous drag on the ferrofluidic drop, and it exploits the nonlinear (quadratic) nature of the dependence of the magnetic force on the electromagnet actuations. An ability to control the droplet along arbitrary trajectories is verified both in simulations and in an experiment.

We present a provably-good distributed algorithm for generalized task assignment problem in the context of multirobot systems, where robots cooperate to complete a set of given tasks. In multi-robot generalized assignment problem (MR-GAP), each robot has its own resource constraint (e.g., energy constraint), and needs to consume a certain amount of resource to obtain a payoff for each task. The objective is to find a maximum payoff assignment of tasks to robots such that each task is assigned to at most one robot while respecting robots' resource constraints. MR-GAP is a NP-hard problem. It is an extension of multi-robot linear assignment problem since different robots can use different amount of resource for doing a task (due to the heterogeneity of robots and tasks). We first present an auction-based iterative algorithm for MR-GAP assuming the presence of a shared memory (or centralized auctioneer), where each robot uses a knapsack algorithm as a subroutine to iteratively maximize its own objective (using a modified payoff function based on an auxiliary variable, called price of a task). Our iterative algorithm can be viewed as (an approximation of) best response assignment update rule of each robot to the assignment of other robots at that iteration. We prove that our algorithm converges to an assignment (approximately) at equilibrium under the assignment update rule, with an approximation ratio of 1 + α (where α is the approximation ratio for the Knapsack problem). We also combine our algorithm with a message passing mechanism to remove the requirement of a shared memory and make our algorithm totally distributed assuming the robots' communication network is connected. Finally, we present simulation results to depict our algorithm's performance.

This paper presents spectral characterization for effecient image detection using hyperspectral processing techniques. We investigate the relationship between the number of used bands and the performance of the detection process in order to find the optimal number of band reductions. The band reduction significantly reduces computation and implementation complexity of the algorithms. Specifically, we define and characterize the contribution coefficient for each band. Based on the coefficients, we heuristically select the required minimum bands for the detection process. We have shown that the small number of bands is efficient for effective detection. The proposed algorithm is suitable for low- complexity and real- time applications.

Because of the piezoelectric micro-vibration isolation platform's and the actuators' perturbation, the 6-DOF micro-vibration isolation platform does not be considered as linear system, and which needs robust controllers control the piezoelectric micro-vibration isolation platform. Through the method of state feedback, based on Riccati inequality, designed a new algorithm of robust controller which contends compromise factors' affection to isolate the low frequency distribution, and those factors' affection are replaced by all kinds of platform model's parameters distribution. The simulation and experiment results show that the algorithm is better than the simple robust controller.

Passivity based-control technique incorporating genetic algorithm for design of a free piston Stirling engine

In this paper, a novel design philosophy of free piston Stirling engines based on passivity based-control technique incorporating genetic algorithm is presented. First, the design problem of an FPSE is expressed as a physical nonlinear servo control system with unknown parameters. Accordingly, the desired motions of power piston and displacer (i.e. design objectives) are regarded as the reference trajectories of the control loop. Then, the unknown design parameters of the nonlinear control system including cross sectional-area of the displacer rod, mass and spring stiffness of the power piston and displacer, phase difference, hot gas temperature, and control coefficients are found using a GA along with an error-based objective function. Next, the estimated values of unknown parameters are used to simulate the control system performance. Subsequently, the simulated control system response is compared to the desired trajectories. It is found that the simulated displacements and velocities for both pistons as well as the corresponding limit cycles are close to the desired references of the control system. Finally, simulated performance of the FPSE is verified through experimental results. The outcomes of this research clearly reveal the effectiveness of the proposed nonlinear control-based design technique of the free piston Stirling engine (SUTECH-SR-1).

The molecule evoluator.: An interactive evolutionary algorithm for the design of drug-like molecules

We developed a software tool to design drug-like molecules, the "Molecule Evoluator", which we introduce and describe here. An atom-based evolutionary approach was used allowing both several types of mutation and crossover to occur. The novelty, we claim, is the unprecedented interactive evolution, in which the user acts as a fitness function. This brings a human being's creativity, implicit knowledge, and imagination into the design process, next to the more standard chemical rules. Proof-of-concept was demonstrated in a number of ways, both computationally and in the lab. Thus, we synthesized a number of compounds designed with the aid of the Molecule Evoluator. One of these is described here, a new chemical entity with activity on alpha-adrenergic receptors.

Karst is the general term for a series of underground or surface forms produced by the erosion of soluble rocks by water. Karst landforms are the masterpieces of nature, with high aesthetic, scientific and natural heritage values. Karst caves are landscapes composed of carbonate rocks dissolved and eroded by groundwater into cavities and secondary carbonate deposits, such as stalagmites, stalactites, stone pillars and stone mantles. The article takes Guilin, China, the most typical and universal representative place of karst evolution in the world as the research object, and proposes a new design method of karst cave geomorphology based on cave landscape characteristics and computerized morphogenetic algorithm with the help of interdisciplinary thinking and tools. Different landscape causes and characteristics of caves are analyzed and the elements of their morphogenetic design are summarized. The grasshopper platform combined with different algorithmic plug-ins to determine the morphology is introduced and the generation of shapes with cave landscape characteristics is realize. A real case is analyzed and its potential role in interactive design is discuss.

algorithm design ability is the most fundamental and principal ability for students majoring in computer. algorithm design courses give stress over abstraction, practice and creativity of the knowledge. Therefore, the difficulty in teaching is also increased to certain extent. With aim at the features of algorithm design courses, the thesis proposes that the principle of overall arrangement, good foundation and making progresses gradually shall be observed in organizing the courses. Also, the methods for enhancing students' interests, cultivating the ability to analyze questions abstractly and solve actual problems during the implementation of courses are discussed in great detail. Finally, the guiding points in practical teaching are also summarized in the paper.

In the paper we deal with control of spatially invariant systems described by parabolic partial differential equations with one temporal and one spatial variables. We propose an algorithm for design of deadbeat controllers. The algorithm is based on polynomial methods. It consists in solving a linear equation with bi-variate polynomials. Numerical example and simulations are included.
