Nonlinear clustering has attracted an increasing amount of attention recently. In this paper, we propose a new nonlinear clustering method based on Cluster Shrinking and Border Detection (CSBD). Unlike most existing clustering method, the CSBD method focuses on every data point rather then the cluster centers. A novel idea, namely Cluster Shrinking, is designed to transform the original nonlinear datasets into several hyperspheres, which makes clustering work much easier. Besides, we also introduce a simple but effective Border Detection method based on histogram analysis to automatically determine the threshold parameter in Cluster Shrinking phase. Extensive experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of CSBD in both synthetic and real-world datasets.

Community structure is one of the most important properties for understanding the topology and function of a complex network. Recently, the rank reduction technique, non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), has been successfully used to uncover communities in complex networks. In the machine learning literature, the algorithm Alternating Constraint Least Squares (ACLS) is developed to perform NMF with sparsity constraint for clustering data and showed good performance, but it is not used in detecting communities in networks. In this study, we first test the ACLS algorithm on several synthetic and real networks to show its performance on community detection. Then we extend ACLS to orthogonal nonnegative matrix factorization, propose ALSOC, in which orthogonality constraint is added into NMF to discovery communities. The experimental results show that NMF with orthogonality constraint is able to improve the performance of community detection, meanwhile it has ability to maintain the sparsity of matrix factors.

The amount of data produced on a daily basis is growing at an exponential rate. One method of filtering through this data is the use of similarity joins, or methods that are used to identify similar data. Such algorithms are used for a variety of applications ranging from plagiarism detection to marketing. These methods are typically time-consuming and computationally expensive. This paper proposes an efficient three-stage MapReduce algorithm named Adept Similarity Join (ASJ) for multisets. The main novelty in ASJ is to integrate suffix filtering with positional filtering when performing similarity joins, in addition to incorporating prefix and size filtering. The proposed algorithm is compared to the state-of-the-art Strategic and Suave processing for performing similarity joins using MapReduce (SSS) algorithm, which it outperforms by lowering the number of redundant comparisons. Experimental results on a Twitter dataset demonstrate that the proposed ASJ algorithm provides about a 25% to 40% decrease in execution time and 100x reduction in memory usage compared to SSS.

Stable output level increases the accuracy of further signal processing algorithms. So, gain control algorithms are important pre-processing steps. On the other hand, implementation of gain control algorithms vary depending on environment and performance parameters. In this case, the algorithms are required re-implementation. Reimplementation is a time consuming process especially for embedded signal processing platforms like FPGA. Implementation of signal processing algorithms as IP Cores are recommended to resolve re-design requirement. IP core is a logical block that is designed for FPGAs. By means of transportable structure, it can be applied to all systems easily. This paper presents implementation of gain control algorithms as IP Core. Introduced IP Core makes it easy to implement AGC and TVG in any configuration. Also, it accelerates design time.

This paper utilizes a spatial domain Watermarking algorithm applicable on grayscale images. Spatial domain technique is utilized taking advantage of it low computational complexity. The initial stage of approach is accomplished by building the algorithm on MATLAB R2014a© platform and then shifting the base to ISE design Suite 14.7© platform. The VLSI implementation of the spatial domain Watermarking algorithm is targeted on device xc5vlx50t-1ff1136 of Virtex-5 family. The robustness of the Watermarking algorithm is verified by attacking the Watermarked image with various types of noise, compression, transformation and geometrical attacks. The application of Multiple Watermarking technique also renders the effectiveness and robustness of the watermarking algorithm.

The ability to acquire the profile of surfaces is essential for various applications in manufacturing. Most profilometry techniques can be divided in two categories, contact and non-contact. Non-contact methods mostly rely on interferometry, structured illumination and focus variation. The cost of a commercial profilometer can be prohibitive for small businesses wishing to accurately control their manufacturing processes. Here, we show how a basic light microscope can be modified at a low cost in order to obtain surface profiles. We will describe the add-ons to the microscope, the custom software developed and the image analysis algorithm that retrieved the surface profile from an image stack.

We propose and analyse an efficient energy-aware application mapping algorithm for dynamic multicore systems. Computer systems integrate more and more processor cores in a single chip due to the limitation of frequency. Not only desktop and server processors, but also mobile processors are equipped with eight or even ten cores. Modern applications have increased focus on parallel computation due to the multicore trend. Mapping applications to the processor without optimization can lead to performance loss and system efficiency degradation. The energy efficiency of multicore systems is especially important for battery-driven devices. We investigate the energy consumption of data transmission in multicore chips. The consumption is divided into router energy and link energy. We discuss the total energy required for transferring data across nodes in a multicore processor. Based on the energy model and application model, we propose an energy-aware mapping algorithm which maps applications in two different *** evaluate the proposed algorithm with other algorithms by using synthetic and real applications. The synthetic workloads proved that the proposed algorithm can be executed dynamically with a negligible time overhead, while the energy consumption reduced significantly. Results from four applications show that the power consumption of the proposed algorithm has reduced by 20.2% and 13.4% compared with the first fit and incremental algorithms respectively.

Plant leaves are very important for their respiration and photosynthesis. The two processes are significant factors for their growth. Measuring leave dimension is very important in studying and analyzing the photosynthesis of plants. Leaf dimension assessment with image evaluation is the most widely technique used for presenting. This paper proposed the algorithm of image segmentation to classify image elements and calculate leaf surface with a threshold segmentation technique by using the constant threshold in gray color model and calculating the degree of green color in the HSV models. Segmentation technique is used to separate good surface out of defective surface of leaf image. Moreover, this paper also proposed leaf area estimation with linear regression analysis with the pixel value on the leaf surface. Further to sixty experiments, they showed the accuracy to separate elements of good surface and defective surface are 98.72% and 96.47% respectively.

With the increasing construction of high-voltage substation, the distance between resident area and substation is getting closer. Noise of substations has been an unavoidable problem which can be controlled better by analyzing it. Otherwise, the operational conditions of equipment in substation can be predicted by comparing the measured noise signals with the signals during normal operation. Corona noise emitted by high voltage transmission line, environmental quasi-stationary noise and noumenon noise generated by electric appliances are three main types of the noise signals in the substation which can't be measured independently by traditional methods. An Underdetermined Blind Source Separation (UBSS) algorithm based on the Sparse Component analysis (SCA) was proposed to separate the mixed 220kV substation noise in this paper which can be applied to overcome the shortage of Independent Component analysis (ICA). The feasibility of the algorithm was verified in the simulation and the experiment before using it to separate the substation noise. An approach to feature extraction based on the wavelet modulus maxima was employed to analyze the separated noise. All the results show that SCA can separat mixed substation noise efficiently.

The Icelandic power system is characterized by two areas that oscillate against each other during stressed system operation, and may lead to an islanding of system. Conventional stabilizing methods are being used to their full capacity, thus new options are being explored to prevent system break-ups. There is potential in exploiting large industrial loads to enhance system stability. In this paper a hardware prototype of a synchrophasor-based active load controller for oscillation damping is presented. The performance of the controller is analysed using Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop (RT-HIL) approach.
