This paper deals with mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment. The proposed algorithm is inspired from artificial potential field (APF) and rotational force method. In the proposed algorithm, the robot's velocity vector is simply determined by relative position vector of robot with respect to target and obstacles. This algorithm is applicable to both stationary and dynamic environments with one or more obstacles and guarantees that the robot can safely track the moving target even in the conditions of local minima or goal not reachable with obstacle nearby. In order to make the simulation more practical, it is applied to wheeled mobile robot. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper presents an algorithm for the synchronization of blind agents evolving on a connected Lie group. We employ the method of extremum seeking control for nonlinear dynamical systems defined on connected Riemannian manifolds to achieve the synchronization among the agents. This approach is independent of the underlying graph of the system and each agent updates its position on the connected Lie group by only receiving the synchronization cost function.

In this paper existing map matching algorithms are combined and modified such, that the resulting algorithm is suitable for the implementation on the graphics processing unit (GPU). The map matching algorithm implemented on GPU consists of a geometrical and topological processing step, which provides high accuracy with high efficiency at the same time. An important building block of the implementation is the parallelization of the R*-tree search. An efficient implementation is achieved by high data parallelism and minimal divergence between execution blocks. The presented map matching algorithm performs better than available open source implementations.

Based on the analysis of the premature convergence causing in genetic algorithm, and enlightened by the biology migratory phenomenon and Inversion Operator, a cyclic shift genetic algorithm (CSGA) was presented and discussed with different strategy. CSGA can effectively suppress the premature phenomenon of standard genetic algorithm (SGA), decrease the dependence of SGA to the character of initial population, and enhance the convergent speed and rate. The superiority of propose algorithm was validated by simulation and the successful application to the optimal design of electromagnetic devices.

Network functions virtualization (NFV) is increasingly adopted by telecommunications (telecos) service providers for cost savings and flexible management. However, deploying virtual network functions (VNFs) in geo-distributed central offices (COs) is not straightforward. Unlike most existing centralized schemes in clouds, VNFs of a service chain usually need to be deployed in multiple COs due to limited resource capacity and uneven setup cost at various locations. To ensure the Quality of Service of service chains, a key problem for service providers is to determine where a VNF should go, in order to achieve cost-efficiency and load balancing of both computing and bandwidth resources, across all selected COs. To this end, we present a framework of CO Selection (CS) and VNF Assignment (VA) for distributed deployment of NFV. Specifically, we first select a set of COs that minimizes the communication cost among the selected COs. Then, we employ a shadow-routing based approach, which minimizes the maximum of appropriately defined CO utilizations, to jointly solve the VNF-CO and VNF-server assignment problem. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of CS algorithm, and asymptotic optimality, scalability and high adaptivity of the VNF assignment approach.

This paper gives a mixed Virtual Reference Feedback Tuning (VRFT) - Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) design and tuning method. The performance objectives of VRFT and IFT are discussed comparatively. The parameterization of IFT is employed in the calculation of a convenient unbiased estimate of the Hessian specific to IFT. The VRFT-IFT design and tuning method is applied and assessed in the speed and position control of a laboratory equipment.

The aim of this paper is to propose a machine learning approach for predicting the performance of each configuration of optimization algorithms. Our approach consists of advocating making the decision of finding the most suitable configuration on a per-instance analysis based on a supervised machine learning model. That is, it consists of building a support vector machine (SVM) model to predict the performance of each configuration on each instance and then to select the adapted setting depending on the instance. Furthermore, feature selection has been used as a pre-processing step to select the relevant features in order to enhance the predictive capacity of SVM. The experiment consists of predicting algorithm performance metrics for two well known optimization problems using SVM in its continuous and binary form depending on the metric of each problem.

Sampling has long been a prominent tool in statistics and analytics, first and foremost when very large amounts of data are involved. In the realm of very large file systems (and hierarchical data stores in general), however, sampling has mostly been ignored and for several good reasons. Mainly, running sampling in such an environment introduces technical challenges that make the entire sampling process non-beneficial. In this work we demonstrate that there are cases for which sampling is very worthwhile in very large file systems. We address this topic in two aspect: (a) the technical side where we design and implement solutions to efficient weighted sampling that is also distributed, one-pass and addresses multiple efficiency aspects;and (b) the usability aspect in which we demonstrate several use-cases in which weighted sampling over large file systems is extremely beneficial. In particular, we show use-cases regarding estimation of compression ratios, testing and auditing and offline collection of statistics on very large data stores.

Current advancement and innovation in the use of magnetic fields for various applications has motivated the investigation of inverse methodologies to design magnetic systems that produce unique or complex field patterns. Variable Field Generation was previously introduced as a possible solution to inverse magnetostatic problems. By defining an inverse magnetic problem using this algorithm, the magnetic design necessary to produce a desired field pattern can be found more robustly than with using other methods. This paper briefly examines the current expansions and advancement of the program since its conception. The universality of the Variable Field Generation was evaluated, resulting in a couple of new observations, which are described in this paper. Finally, the possible application of the Variable Field Generation algorithm for the invention of a dynamic magnetic field generator and the design of currently proposed magnetic systems are discussed.

A theory and low computational cost linear algorithm is presented for estimating algebraic surfaces of second degree for representing an object in 3D, based on fitting in the dual space (space of tangent planes) computed from images taken by a calibrated camera in a number of positions. The approach and algorithm are designed to handle implicit quadric surfaces, which are regular or singular in a uniform way without distinguishing the two cases. A significance of these quadric surface estimation results is, as illustrated in the paper, the estimation of complex 3D free form shapes in a computationally simple way in terms of quadric patches. The paper explains how singular quadrics cause instabilities in the 3D surface-fitting and representation, and presents regularization, based on this understanding, to produce accurate stable surface representations.
