Sampling has long been a prominent tool in statistics and analytics, first and foremost when very large amounts of data are involved. In the realm of very large file systems (and hierarchical data stores in general), however, sampling has mostly been ignored and for several good reasons. Mainly, running sampling in such an environment introduces technical challenges that make the entire sampling process non-beneficial. In this work we demonstrate that there are cases for which sampling is very worthwhile in very large file systems. We address this topic in two aspect: (a) the technical side where we design and implement solutions to efficient weighted sampling that is also distributed, one-pass and addresses multiple efficiency aspects;and (b) the usability aspect in which we demonstrate several use-cases in which weighted sampling over large file systems is extremely beneficial. In particular, we show use-cases regarding estimation of compression ratios, testing and auditing and offline collection of statistics on very large data stores.

Balsa provides an open-source design flow where asynchronous circuits are created from high-level specifications, but the syntaxdriven translation often results in performance overhead. To improve this, we exploit the fact that bundled-data circuits can be divided into data and control path. Hence, tailored optimisation techniques can be applied to both paths separately. For control path optimisation, STG-based resynthesis has been used (applying logic minimisation). To continue the investigation, we additionally apply synchronous standard tools to optimise the data path. However, this removes the matched delays needed for a properly working bundled-data circuit. Therefore, we also present two algorithms to automatically insert proper matched delays. Our experiments show a performance improvement of up to 44% and energy consumption improvement of up to 60% compared to the original Balsa implementation.

Compressed sensing (CS) is a technique that enables signal reconstruction at sub-Nyquist rate and has been widely used for fast reconstruction of multi-view video sequences (MVS) in the surveillance application. In this paper, we propose compressed-sensing recovery of MVS exploiting the model of structural group sparse representation (SGSR) along with a targeted database. SGSR groups similar patches together coupled with learning the adaptive basis from the similar groups, which gets sparser representation and thereby performs better in CS recovery. A targeted database can be easily obtained from the MVS due to their abundant prior information and the database can help us obtain more accurate similar patches, which further improve the performance with SGSR. Considering images as compressible signals rather than sparse signals, we design a filtering to retain the details of images. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing reconstruction algorithms.

In recent years, several new methods for missing data estimation have been developed. Real world datasets possess the properties of big data being volume, velocity and variety. With an increase in volume which includes sample size and dimensionality, existing imputation methods have become less effective and accurate. Much attention has been given to narrow Artificial Intelligence frameworks courtesy of their efficiency in low dimensional settings. However, with an increase in dimensionality, these methods yield unrepresentative imputations with an impact on decision making processes. Therefore in this paper, we present a new framework for missing data imputation in high dimensional datasets. A Deep Learning technique is used in conjunction with a swarm intelligence algorithm. The performance of the proposed technique was experimentally tested and compared against other existing methods on an off-line dataset. The results obtained have shown promising potential with slightly longer execution times, which are a worthy trade-off when accuracy is of importance.

Current advancement and innovation in the use of magnetic fields for various applications has motivated the investigation of inverse methodologies to design magnetic systems that produce unique or complex field patterns. Variable Field Generation was previously introduced as a possible solution to inverse magnetostatic problems. By defining an inverse magnetic problem using this algorithm, the magnetic design necessary to produce a desired field pattern can be found more robustly than with using other methods. This paper briefly examines the current expansions and advancement of the program since its conception. The universality of the Variable Field Generation was evaluated, resulting in a couple of new observations, which are described in this paper. Finally, the possible application of the Variable Field Generation algorithm for the invention of a dynamic magnetic field generator and the design of currently proposed magnetic systems are discussed.

A theory and low computational cost linear algorithm is presented for estimating algebraic surfaces of second degree for representing an object in 3D, based on fitting in the dual space (space of tangent planes) computed from images taken by a calibrated camera in a number of positions. The approach and algorithm are designed to handle implicit quadric surfaces, which are regular or singular in a uniform way without distinguishing the two cases. A significance of these quadric surface estimation results is, as illustrated in the paper, the estimation of complex 3D free form shapes in a computationally simple way in terms of quadric patches. The paper explains how singular quadrics cause instabilities in the 3D surface-fitting and representation, and presents regularization, based on this understanding, to produce accurate stable surface representations.

Based on the analysis of the premature convergence causing in genetic algorithm, and enlightened by the biology migratory phenomenon and Inversion Operator, a cyclic shift genetic algorithm (CSGA) was presented and discussed with different strategy. CSGA can effectively suppress the premature phenomenon of standard genetic algorithm (SGA), decrease the dependence of SGA to the character of initial population, and enhance the convergent speed and rate. The superiority of propose algorithm was validated by simulation and the successful application to the optimal design of electromagnetic devices.

This paper presents a new feature selection technique based on rough sets and bat algorithm (BA). BA is attractive for feature selection in that bats will discover best feature combinations as they fly within the feature subset space. Compared with GAs, BA does not need complex operators such as crossover and mutation, it requires only primitive and simple mathematical operators, and is computationally inexpensive in terms of both memory and runtime. A fitness function based on rough-sets is designed as a target for the optimization. The used fitness function incorporates both the classification accuracy and number of selected features and hence balances the classification performance and reduction size. This paper make use of four initialisation strategies for starting the optimization and studies its effect on bat performance. The used initialization reflects forward and backward feature selection and combination of both. Experimentation is carried out using VCI data sets which compares the proposed algorithm with a GA-based and PSO approaches for feature reduction based on rough-set algorithms. The results on different data sets shows that bat algorithm is efficient for rough set-based feature selection. The used rough-set based fitness function ensures better classification result keeping also minor feature size.

This paper presents state of the art methods for training compact universal CNN cells (or neurons) to represent arbitrary local Boolean functions. The design tools are analyzed and optimized such that they are capable to provide fast solutions for cells with more than 4 inputs. In particular, it is proved statistically that any arbitrary Boolean function with n=5 inputs (corresponding to a von Neumann CNN neighborhood) admits multi-nested cell realizations thus confirming a conjecture that was previously proven only for n<5. Several hints are also provided regarding the choice and the influence of various parameters of the design algorithms on the quality of the solution and the speed of finding it.

This paper presents an algorithm for the synchronization of blind agents evolving on a connected Lie group. We employ the method of extremum seeking control for nonlinear dynamical systems defined on connected Riemannian manifolds to achieve the synchronization among the agents. This approach is independent of the underlying graph of the system and each agent updates its position on the connected Lie group by only receiving the synchronization cost function.
