Feature selection plays a vital role in boosting the performance of a classifier. The aim of feature selection is to remove irrelevant features and choose only highly invidious ones thus improving the performance of classification. This paper compares the performance of nine popular feature ranking (FR) metrics on six benchmark datasets using Naive Bayes (NB) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers. Results of comparisons are shown both in tabular and graphical forms. The nine FR metrics include: Chi squared (CHI), Odds Ratio (OR), Information Gain (IG), Gini Index (GINI), Poisson Ratio (POIS), Normalized Difference Measure (NDM), Balanced Accuracy Measure (ACC2), Distinguishing Feature Selector (DFS), and Binormal Separation (BNS). We used six datasets for empirical evaluation: WAP, K1a, RE0, RE1, Spam and Enron where two datasets (RE0, K1a) are highly skewed. The performance of classifiers is evaluated based on popular micro and macro averaged F1 measures.

We study online cloud resource auctions where users can arrive anytime and bid for heterogeneous types of virtual machines (VMs) assembled and provisioned on the fly. The proposed auction mechanism RSMOA, to the authors' knowledge, represents the first truthful online mechanism that timely responds to incoming users' demands and makes dynamic resource provisioning and allocation decisions, while guaranteeing efficiency in both the provider's revenue and system social welfare. RSMOA consists of two components: (1) an online mechanism that computes resource allocation and users' payments based on a global, non-decreasing pricing curve, and guarantees truthfulness;(2) a judiciously designed pricing curve, which is derived from a threat-based strategy and guarantees a competitive ratio O(ln(p)) in both system social welfare and the provider's revenue, as compared to the celebrated offline Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) auction. Here p is the ratio between the upper and lower bounds of users' marginal valuation of a type of resource. The efficacy of RSMOA is validated through extensive theoretical analysis and trace-driven simulation studies.

Systems of "building block" algorithms can guarantee that self-organizing systems eventually converge to a predictable state [1], [2], but what of their dynamical behavior in environments with ongoing changes? To begin to address this challenge, we analyze a commonly used distributed distance estimation algorithm from a stability theory perspective, identifying key properties of monotonicity and dynamical behavior envelope. This allows standard stability theory analysis to be applied to predict the behavior of the algorithm in response to persistent perturbation, both in isolation and as part of a composite system, as demonstrated both analytically and in simulation.

High-Frequency Trading (HFT) systems require extremely low latency in response to market updates. This motivates the use of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to accelerate different system components such as the network stack, financial protocol parsing, order book handling and even custom trading algorithms. However, the long cycle of developing and verifying FPGA designs makes it challenging for HFT software developers to deploy such highly-dynamic systems, especially with their limited hardware design expertise. We present a complete highly-optimized infrastructure that implements low-latency system components in C++ using High-Level Synthesis (HLS). We also develop a framework that enables HFT algorithm developers to implement their trading algorithms in a high-level programming language and rapidly integrate it to the rest of the system. We implemented our HLS-based system on a Xilinx Kintex Ultrascale FPGA running at 156 MHz. Our on-board measurements show an end-to-end round-trip latency less than 870ns, which is comparable to that achieved by prior RTL-based implementations but requires reduced system development time and effort.

The objective of this work is to present a new iterative method to solve electromagnetic field problems using the method of moments formulation. The new method is conceptually simple and requires much fewer mathematical operations per iteration when compared to other available methods. Further, the method can easily handle multiple right hand side vectors much the same way as direct solution techniques. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the applicability and accuracy of the new method.

In this work, a genetic algorithm was used to design combinational logic circuits (CLCs), with the goal of minimizing the number of logic elements in the circuit. A new coding for circuits is proposed using a multiplexer (MUX) at the output of the circuit. This MUX divides the truth table into two distinct parts, with the evolution occurring in three sub-circuits connected to the control input and the two data inputs of the MUX. The methodology presented was tested with some benchmark circuits. The results were compared with those obtained using traditional design methods, as well as the results found in other articles, which used different heuristics to design CLCs.

Genetic algorithms (GAs) have been studied for more than three decades now. Their application in optimization problems is well understood and significant amount of research has gone into the development of efficient GA operators. Besides GAs, a number of other Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) and their performance-enhancing variations have been proposed. However, this upgraded performance is often achieved at the undesirable cost of introducing additional user-defined parameters. In an attempt to put forward a case for GA even when a plethora of other EAs are available, we present the results obtained by using a Real-Coded, Elite preserving GA on the Real World optimization problems of IEEE CEC - 2011. Based on our preliminary investigations, we would like to stress that the current work shall help bring forth the need to take a step back to re-assess the applicability of basic GAs to practical optimization before yet another Bio-inspired algorithm is introduced.

Internet is evolving. How the content is generated has changed and currently, users and readers of a site can create content. They can express themselves showing their feelings or opinions commenting diverse stories or other users' comments in social news websites. This fact has led to negative side effects: the appearance of troll users and their contents seeking deliberately controversy. In this paper we propose a new method to filter trolling comments using compression models. Normally, Vector Space Model representation use is quite common but these filters can be attacked. To this end, we validate our approach with data from 'Meneame', a popular Spanish social news site, training several compression models, showing that our method can maintain high accuracy rates whilst making such filters difficult to defeat.

Many telecom, customers have applications with time varying reliability requirements. However, current frameworks for a Service-Level Agreement (SLA) provide the same reliability during the entire holding time, rather than providing high reliability only when required. Recent papers establish an SLA framework to support time-differentiated resilience using Critical Windows (CWs). CWs are scheduled, regularly repeating time periods where additional resilience is required. CW-oriented provisioning has been studied for specific end-to-end cases. We expand the previous work by investigating the structural properties of CWs in various dynamic settings, and propose a CW-aware provisioning scheme applicable for practical mesh networks. Our provisioning scheme is also enhanced to incorporate the shared-path protection for higher resilience. Our study shows: 1) that CWs provide a substantial performance improvement in mesh networks;2) CW performance gain is insensitive to several network parameters;and 3) CWs can be implemented on top of generic SPP to provide even better performance.

In this paper we present our new design of NNCTPH, a scalable algorithm to build an approximate k-NN graph from large text datasets. The algorithm uses a modified version of Context Triggered Piecewise Hashing to bin the input data into buckets, and uses NN-Descent, a versatile graph-building algorithm, inside each bucket. We use datasets consisting of the subject of spam emails to experimentally test the influence of the different parameters of the algorithm on the number of computed similarities, on processing time, and on the quality of the final graph. We also compare the algorithm with a sequential and a MapReduce implementation of NN-Descent. For our datasets, the algorithm proved to be up to ten times faster than NN-Descent, for the same quality of produced graph. Moreover, the speedup increased with the size of the dataset, making NNCTPH a sensible choice for very large text datasets.
