AUTOMATIC design OF A DEEP-DRAWN CIRCUMSCRIBING PREFORM

The authors describe a procedure for the automatic design of a preform based on circumscription algorithms. The procedure is defined in general terms and applied to preforms realized by axisymmetric deep-drawing processes. The automatic design procedure is supervised by a 'generate, test, and rectify' tactic. The 'generate' stage hypothesizes a deep-drawn preform that either contains the finished workpiece or is 'close' to doing so. If the workpiece is not fully contained by the initial preform, the latter is 'rectified'. Rectification applies small changes to the radii of bending and to the wall thickness of the hypothesized preform cup. Either rectification continues recursively or a new hypothesis is generate. The cup is defined by its medial and a nominal uniform wall thickness. The design is accepted when a circumscribing cup is produced. The supervisory search mechanism is a combination of A*, hill-climbing, and depth-first.< >

One of the most critical challenges for high-performance computing (HPC) scientific visualization is execution on massively threaded processors. Of the many fundamental changes we are seeing in HPC systems, one of the most profound is a reliance on new processor types optimized for execution bandwidth over latency hiding. Our current production scientific visualization software is not designed for these new types of architectures. To address this issue, the VTK-m framework serves as a container for algorithms, provides flexible data representation, and simplifies the design of visualization algorithms on new and future computer architecture. AUTOMATIC RECOGNITION OF KEYWORDS IN UNCONSTRAINED SPEECH USING HIDDEN MARKOV-MODELS

The modifications made to a connected word speech recognition algorithm based on hidden Markov models (HMMs) which allow it to recognize words from a predefined vocabulary list spoken in an unconstrained fashion are described. The novelty of this approach is that statistical models of both the actual vocabulary word and the extraneous speech and background are created. An HMM-based connected word recognition system is then used to find the best sequence of background, extraneous speech, and vocabulary word models for matching the actual input. Word recognition accuracy of 99.3% on purely isolated speech (i.e., only vocabulary items and background noise were present), and 95.1% when the vocabulary word was embedded in unconstrained extraneous speech, were obtained for the five word vocabulary using the proposed recognition algorithm.< >

PROCESS OPTIMIZATION USING A FUZZY-LOGIC RESPONSE-SURFACE METHOD

A new response surface method using fuzzy logic models (FL-RSM) has been proposed. The algorithm starts with a fuzzy logic model (FLM) constructed on the experimental data obtained with design of experiments (DOE). The gradient search method is used with a specified step size, and a confirming experiment is conducted at each step. The search continues until no further improvement in the objective function is observed in that gradient direction. The FLM is trained with the new experimental data combined with the old DOE data, and a new gradient is evaluated. The process is repeated until the working point is close to the optimum, as indicated by a marginal improvement in the objective function. Then the algorithm switches to the optimum search mode. It calculates the optimum based on the model, and a confirming experiment is conducted at the suggested optimum settings. The procedure is repeated until the exit criterion is satisfied. The optimization procedure has been applied to a vertical chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process with various no se levels. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed FL-RSM. It is similar to the existing regression-model-based RSM approaches. The main difference is that it uses one self-adjusted FLM to replace the combination of linear and nonlinear regression models. As a result, FL-RSM can be more user friendly and efficient in many applications.

A knowledge-based, hierarchical, unsupervised classification scheme for high-resolution multispectral satellite (HRMS) images is described. This scheme, which finds its conceptual bases in the work of Nagao and Matsuyama for structural analysis of aerial photographs, introduces a new filtering algorithm which is able to preserve fine linear structures of the image. An example of the application of this classification scheme to a Landsat Thematic Mapper multispectral image is presented.

DECISION TREE design FROM A COMMUNICATION-THEORY STANDPOINT

A communication theory approach to decision tree design based on a top-town mutual information algorithm is presented. It is shown that this algorithm is equivalent to a form of Shannon-Fano prefix coding, and several fundamental bounds relating decision-tree parameters are derived. The bounds are used in conjunction with a rate-distortion interpretation of tree design to explain several phenomena previously observed in practical decision-tree design. A termination rule for the algorithm called the delta-entropy rule is proposed that improves its robustness in the presence of noise. Simulation results are presented, showing that the tree classifiers derived by the algorithm compare favourably to the single nearest neighbour classifier

An alarm system is a fundamental application of IWSNs. Most of the existing literature focuses on reliability and quality of service of alarm systems. In addition, timeliness is another big concern for alarm systems considering the serious consequences of various emergencies. However, with the explosion of energy consumption, energy efficiency is becoming more and more important for IWSNs. Improving energy efficiency effectively without reducing other performance of alarm systems is a severe challenge. In this article, we design a novel green framework of alarm systems for the industrial field based on the IWSN. The proposed framework is composed of two parts, the IWSN and the security sector, which are connected through wireless links. The main responsibility of the IWSN is to monitor and track emergency and deliver the collected data to the security sector;the main responsibility of the security sector is to store and analyze the received data stream, and send requests to the IWSN. In IWSN, sleeping schedules and routing algorithms are designed carefully to improve the energy efficiency, reliability, and timeliness of alarm systems. Tracking emergencies and reducing redundant nodes are also necessary. The security sector stores and analyzes a data stream, and then evaluates an emergency situation. At last, the estimated emergency situation is used to trigger some corresponding actions to tackle the emergency.

In this paper, window design and fast algorithm for the overlapping block transform (OBT) of size NxL are presented, The presented algorithm for the OBT reduces the calculation complexity to an NxN transform with a fast algorithm and a simple preprocessing including windowing, A signal-independent window optimization strategy is introduced for image coding application, Results for a first-order Markov model and an image coding experiment show, that the coding gains of the optimized OBT's increase and blocking effects decrease with increasing window length L. A comparison with DCT-coding shows that the OBT, whch has a slightly increased realization complexity, provides higher coding gain and a significant blocking effect reduction.

SINGLE CHIP IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LEVINSON algorithm

The design, implementation, and testing procedure are presented for a single chip implementation of the Levinson algorithm. This algorithm provides an iterative procedure for the solution of certain systems of linear equations and is used in many basic problems in communications and signal processing. This chip consists of a 1200-bit RAM memory, a divider based on the nonrestoring division algorithm, a recorder-based multiplier suitable for pipelined operations, and a controller that consists of two PLAs and six address registers. Modifications of the algorithm permit the parallel use of both the multiplier and the divider. The design is done in 4-/spl mu/m NMOS technology, and 12-bit-long operants in two's complement are used. By using a 5-MHz two-phase clock, the chip can compute 20 iterations of the algorithm in approximately 675 /spl mu/s. Application to lattice filtering in linear data channel equilization is considered. Off-line testing of the chip can be done effectively with minimum additional hardware through separate data and control buses.

This paper presents a new algorithm for the optimal long-range generation planning for hydro-thermal system. The algorithm is based upon the analytical production costing model developed under the assumption of Gaussian probabilistic distribution of random load fluctuations and plant outages. The optimization problem consists of the master problem to determine the annual investment, and the hydro subproblem to determine the optimal hydro operation. The master problem is formulated as a Hamiltonian minimization problem, and the hydro subproblem is solved using the concept of peak-shaving operation on the original load curve.
