We introduce an adaptive mixing (AM) algorithm for estimating the relative ratios of chemicals in a mixture spectrum. This procedure is particularly well suited to mixtures with a large dynamic range of mixture weights. It has the advantage of being able to be used in conjunction with a band-pass (difference-of-Gaussian or DOG) filter, and a correction of baseline off-set and tilting of the spectrum [1]. Output of these filtering techniques is a cleaner signal retaining most of the relevant Raman spectral signature while minimizing artifacts due primarily to Rayleigh, dust, and atmospheric aerosols. We will describe the results of applying the algorithm to mixture spectra with both real and simulated additive noise.

Recent developments in image coding tend to promote schemes consisting of a great variety of coding algorithms applied to different parts of the image to code. This results in an improved rate-distortion behavior of the global system. The selection of the optimal coding method for a given region of an image is still a computationally intensive task, as most of the current schemes need to compute the result for all algorithms and to choose the most suited one. This paper investigates a method to predict the coding performance. This prediction is based on extracted features of the input image. The computation of those features, as well as the prediction itself, is computationally much less expensive than the exhaustive selection. The prediction system is based on neural networks. Selected image features and a set of representation of those features build the input of the network. The low computation cost also enables a dynamic distribution of the fixed bitrate over the different parts of the image, and therefore an algorithm capable to allocate bits to reach a constant quality over the whole image.

The data types of graphics, images, audio and video or collectively multimedia are becoming standard components of most computer interfaces and applications. Medical imaging in particular will be able to exploit these capabilities in concert with the database engines or 'information furnaces' that will exist as part of the information superhighway. The ability to connect experts with patients electronically enables care delivery from remote diagnostics to remote surgery. Traditional visual computing tasks such as MRI, volume rendering, computer vision or image processing may also be available to more clinics and researchers as they become 'electronically local.' Video is the component of multimedia that provides the greatest sense of presence or visual realism yet has been the most difficult to offer digitally due to its high transmission, storage and computation requirements. Advanced 3D graphics have also been a scarce or at least expensive resource. This paper addresses some of the recent innovations in media processing and client/server technology that will facilitate PCs, workstations or even set-top/TV boxes to process both video and graphics in real-time.

Instead of thinking in terms of intelligent materials, this paper pursues the definition of conditions of behavior which result intelligent in view of a coupling with an active control device (hybrid control). In particular, situations which show a chaotic behavior of the dynamic response to external excitations are promising in terms of control efficiency. The regions of chaotic behavior are identified by evaluation of the corresponding Lyapunov exponents.

The HK-Filter previously developed by the authors is a statistical filter devoted to the speckle removal and structural features enhancement on SAR images. As this filter is based on a pattern analysis applied to the shape observed in a given neighborhood and according to a gray-level range, it can be used to extract structural features. We present a cryptographic scheme for encrypting 2-D gray scale images by using a large family of fractals. This scheme is based on a transposition of the image elements implemented by a generator of 2-D hierarchical scanning patterns producing a large subset of the (n(2))! possible orders defined on a 2-D image of n x n elements. Each pattern defines a distinct order of pixels and can be described by an expression, which is considered as the key of the transposition. This transposition cipher can easily be combined with various substitution ciphers, producing efficient product ciphers operating on pictorial data. Two such ciphers are constructed and their effects on real gray value images are shown. Encryption and decryption algorithms are derived from a parallel algorithm implementing the creation of the family of scanning patterns.
