A neural network is presented for solving a general linear system using an approach that is similar to successive over relaxation (SOR). The network is trained to find the appropriate relaxation parameter. A derivation of the algorithm and its relation to the SOR algorithm is given. The performance of the standard SOR and Jacobi methods are compared with the neural network for two sample problems.

Referring to the different feedback information, the structure--changeable fuzzy controller presented in this paper select different control modes, such as PID, FLC, separately. It is known by studying the simulation results that the structure--changeable fuzzy controller, can eliminate the steady state error and result better robustness than classic PID controller.

It is shown that several RLS-type blind equalization algorithms, e.g., decision-directed schemes as well as 'orthogonalized' constant modulus algorithms, possess a common algorithmic structure and are therefore straightforwardly implemented on an earlier developed triangular array (filter structure) for recursive least squares estimation with inverse updating. While the computational complexity for such algorithms is O(N²), where N is the problem size, the throughput rate for the array implementation is O(1), i.e., independent of the problem size. Such a throughput rate cannot be achieved with standard (Gentleman-Kung- type) RLS/QR-updating arrays because of feedback loops in the computational schemes.

In this paper we propose a novel method for boundary detection of vector fields. The derivation is based on the assumption that the observed vector fields are realizations of a spatially quasi-stationary process and that the vector observations at each pixel site are generated by a parametric probability distribution function. The form of the function is known but its parameters are not. To detect and estimate the locations of the boundaries, we use Bayesian theory and adopt the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) criterion. It is shown that the criterion is a penalized maximum likelihood, which is composed of two terms. One is a data term that monotonically decreases as the number of hypothesized boundaries increases. The other term is a penalty that penalizes for the complexity of the model used to describe the data. The MAP solution is the one that minimizes the criterion. Simulation results are provided that show the performance of the proposed method. The results on synthesized magnetic resonance (MR) images demonstrate that this technique yields highly accurate estimates of the number of boundaries and their locations even for low contrast-to-noise ratios.

Valinomycin, nonactin and 1,1-dimethylsila-20-crown-7 are well known complexing agents for potassium and ammonium ions. Membrane optodes, based on these ion-selective carriers and appropriate chromoionophores, were produced and spectroscopically investigated in the range of 350-700 nm. The spectra of optodes obtained under flow injection analysis conditions were monitored in dependence on time. The calibration curves for potassium and ammonium ions were registered for each optode. The results clearly demonstrate that all tested optodes are both similarly sensitive to K⁺ and NH₄⁺. Thus, biological fluids can not be analyzed simply by the individual calibration curves when the solutions contain similar amounts of K⁺ and NH₄⁺.

A system is presented for compression of hyperspectral imagery. Specifically, DPCM is used for spectral decorrelation, while a 2-D discrete wavelet coding scheme is used for spatial decorrelation. Trellis coded quantization is used to encode the wavelet coefficients. Side information and rate allocation strategies are discussed. Entropy-constrained codebooks are designed using a modified version of the generalized Lloyd algorithm. This entropy constrained system achieves a compression ratio of greater than 70:1 with an average PSNR of the coded hyperspectral sequence approaching 41 dB.

In this paper we first briefly review neural networks and some previous results of their applications on manipulator trajectory control. Then we go into the main part of the paper, i.e., theoretical analysis of neuro-manipulator control systems. It consists of control structure designs, off-line/on-line learning algorithms, and system stability proof. Two control structures are presented, both having a stability guarantee. Simulation on a Puma 560 robot and an experiment on a Mentor robot are also presented to demonstrate how to use the theoretical results and to evaluate performance of the developed control structures.

This paper presents a general methodology for the development of fuzzy algorithms for learning vector quantization (FALVQ). These algorithms can be used to train feature maps to perform pattern clustering through an unsupervised learning process. The development of FALVQ algorithms is based on the minimization of a fuzzy objective function, formed as the weighted sum of the squared Euclidean distances between an input vector, which represents a feature vector, and the weight vectors of the map, which represent the prototypes. This formulation leads to the development of genuinely competitive algorithms, which allow all prototypes to compete for matching each input. The FALVQ 1, FALVQ 2, and FALVQ 3 families of algorithms are developed by selecting admissible generalized membership functions with different properties. The efficiency of the proposed algorithms is illustrated by their use in codebook design required for image compression based on vector quantization.

A new encoding scheme for motion and approximate scene segmentation in video sequences is described. The proposed segmentation partitions the scene into variable size rectangles that can be encoded efficiently in a data structure known as `a slicing floorplan tree' in VLSI design. The motion in each rectangle is represented by size parameters. We describe experiments comparing the compactness of this encoding to motion encoding in MPEG-1, and its quality to motion estimates obtained by standard computer vision techniques. These experiments establish two facts. (1) The proposed representation is flexible enough to describe motion as accurately as the output produced by the best motion algorithms developed by computer vision researchers. (2) The proposed representation is much more compact than the representation of motion in MPEG-1.

development of chemical detection algorithms for open-path FTIR is complicated due to the restricted release of the target compounds. The testing and verification of these algorithms are often impossible since the toxic target compounds can never be released outside the laboratory. A method of generating synthetic FTIR data by introduction of laboratory absorbance spectra into previously collected clean reference backgrounds facilitates this algorithm testing. A method of synthesizing `field grade' spectra has several additional advantages over actual open air releases. The cost of synthetic data is insignificant compared to the cost of data collected at actual open air releases. Unlike open air releases, the synthetic data's concentration pathlength (CL) and cloud temperature (Tc) are precisely known and easily modified. This capability makes it possible to evaluate the precise limit of detection for each of the algorithms being considered. This method works equally well for passive FTIR (using natural radiation as the source) or active FTIR (using a hot source). It is shown that synthetic spectra and real spectra of a target cloud at the same concentration pathlength and cloud temperature are in good agreement.
