This paper describes the Bayesian image reconstruction algorithm with entropy prior with space variant hyperparameter. The spatial variation of the hyperparameter allows different degrees of resolution in areas of high and low signal/noise ratio, thus avoiding the large residuals present in algorithms that use a constant balancing parameter. The space variant hyperparameter determines the relative weight between the prior information and the likelihood defining the degree of smoothness of the solution. To compute the variable hyperparameter we used a segmentation technique based on artificial neural networks of the Self- Organizing Map type. Using this technique we segmented the image in 25 regions and computed a different value of the hyperparameter for each one. We applied the method to the Hubble Space Telescope Cameras and to ground based CCD data.

In this study, the bidirectional character of the ocean reflectance has been taken into account in the processing of coastal zone color scanner (CZCS) imagery, taken as an example. This effect is represented by a factor Q, which relates a given upwelling radiance to the upwelling irradiance. In this study, the Q factor has been calculated for many cases, using Monte Carlo simulations and a lookup table for Q has been produced for the wavelengths corresponding to the CZCS channels. The Q((lambda) ) values computed for a chlorophyll concentration of 0.3 mg/m³, are used for a first iteration in the pixel-by-pixel processing method developed for CZCS data. The chlorophyll concentration obtained at the issue of this first loop is used to adjust the Q factor and the chlorophyll concentration is again computed. These iterative calculations are repeated until the convergence in the chlorophyll values is reached. The final results generally show higher values in chlorophyll than those obtained with Q equals 4.5, by 20 - 80%. These tests show that convergence is rapidly obtained and that two iterations suffice to obtain stable values of chlorophyll concentration.

Worldwide there are many different scripts and languages in common use. Finding text lines and character and word boundaries, where present, are necessary primitive operations for most document processing applications. We have developed a method of handling text lines from several different languages that is robust in the presence of common printing and scanning artifacts. A technique is described by which information about the characteristics of a text line can be determined from a list of the connected pixel components that comprise the image. This technique applies across many languages and scripts that are laid out horizontally. For text comprising Roman type, the location and dimensions of each text line are augmented with positions of the baseline and x-height. Where appropriate, coordinates of space-delimited words and individual character cells are determined. This technique incorporates a computationally inexpensive method for straightening curved lines and segmenting kerned characters and a novel method based on font weight and stress for locating the boundaries of individual characters, even if their images touch.

Bi-directional reflectance from earth terrain surfaces, particularly vegetation has placed increasing emphasis on the measurement of angular reflectance. Many remote-sensing scientists today are focusing on measurements and/or modeling of the angular reflectance properties of earth surface materials. The angular studies emphasis is occurring for several reasons. Of the four primary aspects of land surface reflectance (i.e., spectral, spatial, temporal, angular), this is the least intensively studied and, therefore, the least understood. The angular reflectance properties of Earth targets and, in particular, the bi-directional reflectance of land surface cover types, must be studied to develop algorithms to provide more accurate estimates of spectral hemispherical reflectance and albedo, which is a crucial input to Global Climate Models. The maximum potential of current satellites (e.g., SPOT, AVHRR) that acquire off-nadir viewing data cannot be realized without a good understanding of the angular reflectance properties of the Earth's surfaces. Future EOS satellite instruments (e.g., MISR) have been included expressly to take advantage of, or, to help overcome, the Earth's surface and atmosphere angular reflectance dependencies. The PARABOLA II field scanning radiometer will aid in ground calibration.

Automatic object recognition is a difficult and as yet unsolved problem. There exist, however, a number of benign circumstances in which a great deal is known about all aspects of the problem--enough, in principle, to predict exactly the appearance of the image when given a small amount of information about a few objects present and their locations. In those case, it is rather straightforward to reverse the process and infer from the image the identity and locations of the objects.

The wavelet transform has recently become popular as a tool for multiresolution image decomposition. Simultaneous localization of spatial and spectral information makes the wavelet transform an excellent candidate for the decorrelation stage of an image compression algorithm. This paper describes a simple but effective method of grayscale image compression that uses the wavelet transform. Nonuniform quantizers are applied to the detail subimages of the transform. Detail subimages are then grouped by decomposition level and entropy coded. The lowest resolution image, which results from the all low-pass path through the decomposition, is uniformly quantized and coded directly. Reductions in output bit rate to those of interest to the NITF low bitrate evaluation are achieved through simple scaling of the quantizers and inclusion of run-length coding.

The paper describes how, given a ridge-and-valley image of a fingerprint, a flow map can be extracted. The first step is a unique grayscale algorithm based on 3D mathematical morphology to extract the ridge lines under a wide range of conditions. The paper then compares the results of finding the ridge flow using micropatterns, extended templates (on binary and grayscale images), and several well-known, traditional techniques. The question of spatial resolution is also addressed.

One of the Department of Energy's (DOE) ongoing tasks is the storage and inspection of a large number of waste barrels containing a variety of hazardous substances. Martin Marietta is currently contracted to develop a robotic system -- the Intelligent Mobile Sensor System (IMSS) -- for the automatic monitoring and inspection of these barrels. The IMSS is a mobile robot with multiple sensors: video cameras, illuminators, laser ranging and barcode reader. We assisted Martin Marietta in this task, specifically in the development of image processing algorithms that recognize and classify the barrel labels. Our subsystem uses video images to detect and locate the barcode, so that the barcode reader can be pointed at the barcode.

As a condition for further generalization of the migration to zero-offset in variable velocity media, I develop the theory for 2D migration to zero offset (MZO) in constant velocity media, starting from prestack migration in midpoint-offset coordinates. In arrive at an integral formulation for the MZO operator, analytically derived from the double square root (DSR) prestack migration equation. The integral formulation for the MZO is similar in form to the DSR equation, suggesting a generalization to variable velocity media using a phase-shift algorithm.
