This paper describes tree real-time video edge tracking algorithms for use in tracking targets such as boosting-rockets and satellites. These algorithms are referred to as the Maximum intercept method. Single modified-Hough transform method, and the Double modified-Hough transform method. These algorithms assume knowledge of the angle associated with the edge that you wish to track. Two methods of obtaining the best edge angle from which to track are presented. These edge tracking algorithms and edge- angle determination methods evolved throughout the development of the Advanced Modular Tracker (AMT). The AMT is a real-time video tracker with sophisticated mode logic and is described in another paper. The AMT will be the primary tracker for the High Altitude Balloon Experiment (HABE) being performed by the USAF Phillips Laboratory for the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO).

Authors propose a method to identify the mass matrix of a large building structure by using a small active dynamic damper, or equivalently, an active tuned mass damper. We modify the acceleration feedback algorithm, which was once developed for improving the dynamic damper's performance, with a different objective. The advantage of the dynamic damper is its size: it is so small that there is a possibility that we could create an extra-small device for measuring the mass of a large structure. We review the physical meaning of the acceleration feedback, and then we use a single-degree-of-freedom model to explain how to operate the device to examine the weight of a primary structure. Then, we extend this method to a multi-degree-of-freedom model so that we can measure its effective modal mass with respect to the location where this device is placed. The identification of the mass matrix of a large structure can be completed as we shift the observing points and determine the associated effective mass. Several numerical studies are also carried out to certify the proposed method.

Obesity is a global health problem, particularly in the U. S. where one third of adults are obese. A reliable and accurate method of quantifying obesity is necessary. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) are two measures of obesity that reflect different associated health risks, but accurate measurements in humans or rodent models are difficult. In this paper we present an automatic, registration-based segmentation method for mouse adiposity studies using microCT images. We co-register the subject CT image and a mouse CT atlas. Our method is based on surface matching of the microCT image and an atlas. Surface-based elastic volume warping is used to match the internal anatomy. We acquired a whole body scan of a C57BL6/J mouse injected with contrast agent using microCT and created a whole body mouse atlas by manually delineate the boundaries of the mouse and major organs. For method verification we scanned a C57BL6/J mouse from the base of the skull to the distal tibia. We registered the obtained mouse CT image to our atlas. Preliminary results show that we can warp the atlas image to match the posture and shape of the subject CT image, which has significant differences from the atlas. We plan to use this software tool in longitudinal obesity studies using mouse models.

The potential applications for machine vision are increasing faster than the costs are decreasing. The ability to follow moving objects is a key to machine vision and is the foundation to tracking. The principles of inspection or machine control are essentially unchanged, but the temporal environment introduces increased memory and bandwidth requirements for host processors, and increased performance requirements for the feature extraction processors. Recent developments in hardware are allowing more robust tracking systems at increasingly affordable prices. We'll explore these topics are greater length in the text which follows.

An adaptive time-frequency classifier algorithm is detailed and tested on a data set of acoustic backscatter from a metallic manmade object and natural clutter with synthetic reverberation noise. The algorithm is improved over previous versions in that it operates directly on time signals rather than their wavelet transforms, and in that the features measure time-frequency energy and are insensitive to phase differences (due to signal variations). The time-frequency features are initialized by selecting wavelet transform coefficients with the highest Fisher ratios. Similarities and differences of this classification algorithm with matching pursuit, a representation algorithm, are discussed. This is done to show the need to treat classification differently than representation for realistic cases where class boundaries significantly overlap. The adaptive classifier is shown to have significantly higher detection rates than Fourier transform and wavelet transform methods, as compared by receiver operating characteristics.

An algorithm called the constrained signal detector (CSD) was recently introduced for the purpose of target detection in hyperspectral images. The CSD assumes that hyperspectral pixels can be modeled as linear mixtures of material signatures and stochastic noise. In theory, the CSD is superior to the popular orthogonal subspace projection (OSP) technique. The CSD requires knowledge of the spectra of the background materials in a hyperspectral image. But in practice the background material spectra are often unknown due to uncertainties in illumination, atmospheric conditions, and the composition of the scene being imaged. In this paper, estimation techniques are used to create an adaptive version of the CSD. This adaptive algorithm uses training data to develop a description of the image background and adaptively implement the CSD. The adaptive CSD only requires knowledge of the target spectrum. It is shown through simulations that the adaptive CSD performs nearly as well as the CSD operating with complete knowledge of the background material spectra. The adaptive CSD is also tested using real hyperspectral image data and its performance is compared to OSP.

We have been monitoring the eye fixations of radiologists in order to identify why errors occur in the detection of pulmonary nodules. From these studies we have concluded that most errors are due not to overlooking, but to failure to report nodules that have been fixated by the eyes, often for prolonged gaze durations. Observers visually attend to the nodule, perhaps even apply decision criteria, but falsely decide that it is not the target of search. Because omission errors are associated with clusters of eye fixations having prolonged gaze durations, visual dwell can be used to predict the locations of potentially-missed nodules. A computer-assisted perception (CAP) algorithm has been developed to localize potential lung nodules based on measuring the durations of clusters of eye fixations during search for nodules. In an experiment to test the effectiveness of CAP, observers' eye-position was recorded during initial image reading. This was followed by CAP which consisted of playing back the highlighted locations of prolonged dwells indicating sites of potentially-missed nodules. The observers evaluated each CAP site for nodules and revised their initial decisions. For comparison, the same observers read the images a second time, after a two- month interval, without CAP in a counterbalanced design. The CAP condition resulted in a 16 percent increase in detection performance (AFROC) compared to the non-CAP condition.

An adaptive filtering algorithm is developed for the class of stack filters, which is a class of nonlinear filters obeying a weak superposition property. The adaptation algorithm can be interpreted as a learning algorithm for a group of decision-making units, the decisions of which are subject to a set of constraints called the stacking constraints. Under a rather weak statistical assumption on the training inputs, the decision strategy adopted by the group, which evolves according to the proposed learning algorithm, can be shown to converge asymptotically to an optimal strategy in the sense that it corresponds to an optimal stack filter under the mean absolute error criterion. This adaptive algorithm requires only increment, decrement and comparison operations and only local interconnections between the learning units. Implementation of the algorithm in hardware is therefore very feasible.

Image registration techniques spatially register clinical images of patients performed either at different times with the same modality (intra-modality) or with different modality (inter-modality), to facilitate assessment of change and to take full advantage of the frequently complementary information provided by the imaging modalities. Inter-subject registration permits comparison to normal data bases and averaging of data fi-om several subjects to improve statistical significance. Image registration is well established in the brain since the skull limits deformation of the brain between studies and the use of rigid body transformation can usually be justified for intra-subject registrations. A large range of image registration algorithms, ranging from completely manual to fully automatic, have been developed. These can be classified into external methods, which typically use fiducial markers, intrinsic techniques, which rely on the information contained in the patient image data and non-image based methods, which use information external to the data being registered. The technique of choice depends on the specific requirements of the application and it is unlikely that a single "best" technique can meet sometimes conflicting requirements (e.g. accuracy, speed, ease of use etc). While considerable progress has been made in image registration outside the brain, considerable challenges still remain. In this paper, we present the basic principles of image registration and practical issues arising from our experience with routine clinical use of image registration over several years.

The use of artificial neural networks and Bayesian decision theory is proposed to provide a diagnostic tool which is capable not simply of making a correct decision but of allowing expert knowledge to be incorporated leading to the least risky decision. A neural network is used to estimate a posteriori (class) probabilities conditioned on the input data and the expert knowledge is introduced in the form of subjectively assigned weightings on erroneous decisions. An example of a decision aid for the early diagnosis of heart attacks is presented.
