Finite elements with support on two intervals span the space of piecewise polynomomials with degree 2 n - 1 and n - 1 continuous derivatives. Function values and n - 1 derivatives at each meshpoint determine these `Hermite finite elements'. The n basis functions satisfy a dilation equation with n by n matrix coefficients. Orthogonal to this scaling subspace is a wavelet subspace. It is spanned by the translates of n wavelets W_i(t), each supported on three intervals. The wavelets are orthogonal to all rescalings W_i(2^jt-k), but not to translates at the same level (j equals 0). These new multiwavelets achieve 2 n vanishing moments and high regularity with symmetry and short support.

The task of role-oriented dialog summarization aims at generating appropriate summaries for the different roles in a dialogue. Although existing approaches are able to handle the dialogue content of roles, the extent of the contribution of different roles in a topic has not been analyzed in depth. In this paper, we propose a new model, RoleAdapt, which aims to balance the contributions of each role. RoleAdapt determines the type of summaries that need to be generated by recognizing the Prompt, efficiently identifies the content that contributes more to the topic, and dynamically adjusts the token-level vector representation, which is followed by a decoder that generates the summaries for each role. This approach not only evaluates the contribution of each actor, but also ensures the integrity of the contextual content. We validate RoleAdapt on two publicly available benchmark datasets, CSDS and MC. Experimental results show that the model achieves significant progress on both datasets. Further analysis shows that balancing role contributions is crucial for generating correctly structured summaries. © 2024 SPIE.

With the availability of data from Landsat and other remote sensing satellites, the potential scope of the problems attacked becomes global. This in turn encourages and allows the use of widely disparate data types. However, this use has been hampered by the diversity of data formats, archival conditions and procedures, and the need for data registration. Ability to locate, obtain, and use the data has not been generally expeditious. Systems are being planned to test the ability to alleviate some of these problems.

The use of sun-illuminated Earth images has been explored to aid in meeting the stringent pointing requirements for deep space optical downlink telemetry. It has been shown that fully illuminated Earth images provide a symmetry that easily lends to the determination of the geocenter. Since more often that not, the Earth is only partially illuminated by the sun, additional work is required to meet the pointing requirements under all illumination conditions. This paper develops an algorithm for determining the geocenter of the Earth regardless of the illumination by the sun using sub-pixel scanning and a simple thresholding technique. To complete this approach the acquisition algorithm is paired with a tracking technique based on maximum likelihood estimation. Results have indicated that the algorithm works well to locate and track the position of the Earth and, thereby, a receiving station. Results of the experiments are presented and compared with other techniques.

Reconfigurable architectures are proving to be very effective in applications that involve the implementation of multiple compute-intensive algorithms, which share the same computing modules. With the advent of dynamically reconfigurable architectures, many temporal partitioning algorithms (TPA) have been proposed address the issue of area and time constraints. The main objective of TPA is to divide a large design into smaller sub-components so that they can be implemented over multiple reconfigurations. In this paper, we propose a new temporal partitioning process (TPP), which includes a modified TPA along with a port reallocation algorithm (PRA) to reduce the reconfiguration time to facilitate real-time implementation. The reduction in reconfiguration time is achieved by employing the knowledge of the function implemented in each logic block thereby effectively reusing the cells in the array in a selective manner. This avoids the need for complete reconfiguration and reduces the net reconfiguration time. The proposed approach has been tested on random graphs and on the MCNC benchmark circuits. Significant reduction in reconfiguration time has been achieved.

An extension of one of the fastest existing algorithms for the computation of the 2D discrete cosine transform is given. The algorithm can be implemented in-place requiring N2 less memory locations and 2N2 less data transfers for the computation of N×N DCT points compared to existing 2D FCT algorithms. Based on the proposed algorithm, a fast pruning algorithm is derived for computing the N0xN0 lowest frequency components of a length N×N discrete cosine transform, with both N and N0 being powers of 2. The computational complexity of the algorithm is compared with the row-column pruning method and experimental results on execution times are given.

Atmospheric Ozone

Even though observational data on atmospheric ozone has been steadily increasing during the last few decades, ozone in the upper stratosphere is still poorly resolved. A feasible method for retrieving this information is ground-based spectrophotometer observation of the Umkehr effect. At Sodankyla Observatory in northern Finland, Umkehr-observations have been performed for some years now. Here we present the first results from this work and show some of the potential of the technique.

An algorithm is developed in the companion paper [I], to update the existing Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) to represent the new data series that results when a new signal point is received. Updating the DFT in this way uses less computation than directly evaluating the DFT using the FFT algorithm. This reduces the computational order by a factor of log2 N. The algorithm is able to work in the presence of data window function, for use with rectangular window, the split triangular, Hanning, Hamming, and Blackman windows. In this paper, a hardware implementation of this algorithm, using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology, is outlined. Unlike traditional fully customized VLSI circuits, FPGAs represent a technical break through in the corresponding industry. The FPGA implements thousands of gates of logic in a single Integrated Circuit (IC) chip and it can be programmed by users at their site in a few seconds or less depending on the type of device used. The risk is low and the development time is short. The advantages have made FPGAs very popular for rapid prototyping of algorithms in the area of digital communication, digital signal processing, and image processing. Our paper addresses the related issues of implementation using hardware descriptive language in the development of the design and the subsequent downloading on the programmable hardware chip.

In many image sequence compression applications, Huffman coding is used to reduce statistical redundancy in quantized transform coefficients. The Huffman codeword table is often pre-defined to reduce coding delay and table transmission overhead. Local symbol statistics, however, may be much different from the global one manifested in the pre-defined table. In this paper, we propose a dynamic Huffman coding method which can adaptively modify the given codeword and symbol association according to the local statistics. Over a certain set of blocks, local symbol statistics is observed and used to re-associate the symbols to the codewords in such a way that shorter codewords are assigned to more frequency symbols. This modified code table is used to code the next set of blocks. A parameter is set up so that the relative degree of sensitivity of the local statistics to the global one can be controlled. By performing the same modification to the code table using the decoded symbols, it is possible to keep up with the code table changes in receiving side. The code table modification information need not be transmitted to the receiver. Therefore, there is no extra transmission overhead in employing this method.

Current in-situ assessments of water quality in lakes can be significantly improved by leveraging recent advances in remote sensing and algorithm development for a faster and more cost-effective approach. This study leveraged satellite- (Landsat 7/8 and Sentinel-2) and UAV-based remote sensing datasets to detect and monitor changes in key water quality parameters (Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and Secchi disk depth (SDD)) within the epilimnion of Lake Arlington (Texas) from 2002 to 2020. Remote sensing algorithms were developed to capture the spatial variability of the water quality parameters across the entire water body. Our results indicate: (1) Chl-a levels at the lake's inlet decreased significantly after 2015 (before: 32.1ug/L; after: 9.2ug/l); also turbidity (via SDD) across the lake decreased after 2015 (before: 1.04 m; after: 0.5 m); (2) Linear regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between the in-situ Chl-a concertation with Landsat bands (wet season R2 = 0.78, dry season R2 =0.73; p-value < 0.05); while the relationship between SDD levels was significant in the wet season and insignificant in the dry season (wet season R2 = 0.75 p-value < 0.05, dry season R2 =0.65; p-value > 0.05). Additionally, the linear regression showed a significant relationship between in-situ Chl-a concentration with Sentinel-2 bands (wet season R2 = 0.84, dry season R2 =0.89; p-value <0.05), while the relationship between SDD levels was significant (wet season R2 = 0.84 p-value < 0.05, dry season R2 =0.80; p-value < 0.05); (3) The optimum spectral band to detect Chl-a was found to be between 590-880nm for Landsat and 665-940 nm for Sentinel-2 while for turbidity it was between 450-670nm for Landsat and 560-705nm for Sentinel-2. Sentinel-2 sensors were overall better at detecting Chl-a and turbidity levels in the lake because of their higher spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution; (4) Water quality controlling factors in Lake Arlington include landcover change, precipit
