Detecting targets from infrared (IR) images in the absence of a priori information is a very difficult task. In this paper, we present an unsupervised detection algorithm based on Gabor functions for detecting targets from a single IR image frame. The only explicit assumption made is that the targets can be considered a rectangle. The algorithm consists of three steps. First, it locates potential targets based on a rectangle matching pattern by using low resolution Gabor functions which resist noise and background clutter effects. Then it removes false targets and eliminates redundant target points based on a similarity measure. These two steps mimic human vision processing but are different from Zeevi's Foveating Vision System. Finally, it uses both low and high resolution Gabor functions to verify target existence. This algorithm has been successfully tested on several IR images that contain multiple examples of military vehicles and aircraft with different size and brightness in various background scenes and orientations.

A new algorithm is presented to extract the chain-code representation of the boundary of a binary image. The quadtree representation of this image acts as the input to the algorithm. This algorithm is more efficient than the previously reported algorithm. The algorithm can trace the boundary according to either eight-connected or four-connected neighborhood definitions without any modification. The boundary is traced in the clock-wise direction with respect to the object. The algorithm is based on the following two observations; (1) Visiting a sequence of four-connected white nodes that lie along the object boundary yields an eight-connected boundary while (2) visiting a sequence of four-connected black nodes that lie along the object boundary yields a four-connected boundary. In other words, tracing the object boundary from outside the object using four-connected neighborhood definition extracts an eight-connected boundary, and tracing the object boundary from within the object using four-connected neighborhood definition extracts a four-connected boundary.

In this paper attention is paid to the problem of remote-sensing image authentication by relying on a digital watermarking approach. Both transmission and storage is usually cumbersome for remote-sensing imagery and compression is unavoidable to make it feasible. In the case of multi-spectral images, used for classification purposes, too large valuemetric changes can cause miss-classification errors, so near-lossless compression is used to grant a given peak compression error. Similarly it is likely that also watermarking based authentication should grant such a maximum peak error and the requirements to be satisfied are: to allow valuemetric authentication, to control the peak water-mark embedding error, to tolerate near-lossless compression. To achieve these requirements, a methodology has been designed by integrating into the standard JPEG-LS compression algorithm, by means of a stripe approach, a known authentication technique derived from Fridrich. This procedure points out two advantages: firstly, the produced bit-stream is perfectly compliant with the JPEG-LS standard, secondly, when the image has been decoded, it is always authenticated because information has been embedded in the reconstructed values. Near-lossless coding does not harm authentication procedure and robustness a2ainst different attacks is preserved. JPEG-LS coding/decoding has not got worse from the point of view of computational time.

Recent developments in passive millimeter-wave imaging technology are remarkable. Images of objects obtained through clouds and fog are almost indistinguishable from similar scenes taken under clear conditions. Of particular interest is the ability to image metal targets beneath camouflage, tents, polymers, wooden shelters, and certain levels of ceramic materials. A brief description of this emerging technology will be followed by several convincing examples of images to support the claims made above. Once image formation is complete, the technique of identifying objects in the image using neural networks is similar to the schemes utilized in previous Wright Laboratory Armament directorate implementations of Automatic Target Identification work for electro-optical and infrared images.

Hyperspectral image compression can be performed by either 3-D compression or spectral/spatial compression. It has been demonstrated that due to high spectral resolution hyperspectral image compression can be more effective if compression is carried out spectrally and spatially in two separate stages. One commonly used spectral/spatial compression implements principal components analysis (PCA) or wavelet for spectral compression followed by a 2D/3D compression technique for spatial compression. This paper presents another type of spectral/spatial compression technique, which uses Hyvarinen and Oja's Fast independent component analysis (FastICA) to perform spectral compression, while JPEG2000 is used for 2-D/3-D spatial compression. In order to determine how many independent components are required, a newly developed concept, virtual dimensionality (VD) is used. Since the VD is determined by the false alarm probability rather than the commonly used signal-to-noise ratio or mean squared error (MSE), our proposed FastICA-based spectral/spatial compression is more effective than PCA-based or wavelet-based spectral/spatial compression in data exploitation.

An optically implementable algorithm, which separates a long data stream into several shorter sequences based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT), is described in this paper. Using this algorithm, the convolution/correlation of long data streams are performed by small scale vector-matrix multiplications, which can be realized using the state-of-the-art optical algebraic processing technologies. Computer simulation results of this algorithm are presented. A suitable optical processing architecture is also proposed.

A Survey of On-Device Machine Learning: An algorithms and Learning Theory Perspective

The predominant paradigm for using machine learning models on a device is to train a model in the cloud and perform inference using the trained model on the device. However, with increasing numbers of smart devices and improved hardware, there is interest in performing model training on the device. Given this surge in interest, a comprehensive survey of the field from a device-agnostic perspective sets the stage for both understanding the state of the art and for identifying open challenges and future avenues of research. However, on-device learning is an expansive field with connections to a large number of related topics in AI and machine learning (including online learning, model adaptation, one/few-shot learning, etc.). Hence, covering such a large number of topics in a single survey is impractical. This survey finds a middle ground by reformulating the problem of on-device learning as resource constrained learning where the resources are compute and memory. This reformulation allows tools, techniques, and algorithms from a wide variety of research areas to be compared equitably. In addition to summarizing the state of the art, the survey also identifies a number of challenges and next steps for both the algorithmic and theoretical aspects of on-device learning.

Identification of outliers or noise in a real data set is often quite difficult. A recently developed adaptive fuzzy leader clustering (AFLC) algorithm has been modified to separate the outliers from real data sets while finding the clusters within the data sets. The capability of this modified AFLC algorithm to identify the outliers in a number of real data sets indicates the potential strength of this algorithm in correct classification of noise real data.

A technique is developed for fusing asynchronous data from two dissimilar sensors, where one sensor provides data at a high rate relative to the other. The idea is to obtain a least-squares estimate of the high data rate sensor data at the time when the other sensor observation is taken. A previously developed synchronous data fusion algorithm is then used to fuse the time aligned data for updating the target state estimates. The case of fusing data from an optical sensor that provides periodic data at a high rate and a radar that provides quasi-periodic data at a low data rate is considered. The performance of a track filter utilizing this data fusion approach is shown via simulation to provide results that are similar to those obtained by the standard sequential data processing approach that requires significantly more computations.

This paper discusses a practical solution for supporting the deployment of data flow graphs onto the Loral/Rolm Computer Systems, Inc. vector processing multi-processor architecture. It outlines the support software (both workstation hosted and target system hosted) that is required to design, debug, and maximize deployed data flow graph performance on the multiprocessor architecture. The deployment process guarantees real-time deadlines, minimizes run time scheduling overhead, and minimizes designer partitioning input. It is known that determining effective run time data flow graph node schedules for multi-processor architectures is an NP-complete class of problem not well suited to real-time systems. Loral/Rolm Computer Systems, Inc.'s vector processing toolset recognizes this problem and this paper discusses a prescheduling and pre-assignment approach for partitioning data flow graphs to available hardware resources. In particular the toolset components (which are based upon an enhanced data flow graph language) of workstation pre-assignment, prescheduling, run time gross allocation and local compute element dispatching are discussed in detail.
