Recent developments in image fusion give the user community many options for ways of presenting the imagery to an end-user. Individuals at the US Army RDECOM CERDEC Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate have developed an electronic system that allows users to quickly and efficiently determine optimal image fusion algorithms and color parameters based upon collected imagery and videos from environments that are typical to observers in a military environment. After performing multiple multi-band data collections in a variety of military-like scenarios, different waveband, fusion algorithm, image post-processing, and color choices are presented to observers as an output of the fusion system. The observer preferences can give guidelines as to how specific scenarios should affect the presentation of fused imagery.

Low-orbit satellite ambiguity fixing is the import factor affecting GPS network difference reliability. In this paper, the satellite will be selected as reference satellite by elevation angle of satellite and barycenter of triangle to construct weight matrix. Quickly resolving double difference wide ambiguity based on wide-lane combination, fixing ambiguity of L1/L2 by LAMBDA algorithm, estimating troposphere error in non-ionosphere combination by HOPFIELD model, improving 0.3cycle float ambiguity accuracy of low elevation angle satellite, applying this method to develop network differential systems by our own intellectual property rights. The actual tests show that: accessing to the system the actual mobile station position plane accuracy is better than 5cm.

Several color-imaging algorithms such as color gamut mapping to a target device and resizing of color images have traditionally involved pixel-wise operations. That is, each color value is processed independent of its neighbors in the image. In recent years, applications such as spatial gamut mapping have demonstrated the virtues of incorporating spatial context into color processing tasks. In this paper, we investigate the use of locally based measures of image complexity such as the entropy to enhance the performance of two color imaging algorithms viz. spatial gamut mapping and content-aware resizing of color images. When applied to spatial gamut mapping (SGM), the use of these spatially based local complexity measures helps adaptively determine gamut mapping parameters as a function of image content -hence eliminating certain artifacts commonly encountered in SGM algorithms. Likewise, developing measures of complexity of color-content in a pixel neighborhood can help significantly enhance performance of content-aware resizing algorithms for color images. While the paper successfully employs intuitively based measures of image complexity, it also aims to bring to light potentially greater rewards that may be reaped should more formal measures of local complexity of color content be developed.

We describe the real-time CUDA implementation of an error concealment algorithm for high definition video at 720p. The concealment method is based on decoder motion search on high resolution frame, using a thumbnail as a guide, and is therefore comparable in complexity as encoder motion search. We discuss the different requirements for decoder motion search compared to encoder search, and present a fast motion search algorithm suitable for parallel implementation in GPU. The design of the real-time CUDA implementation and its performance analysis are also presented.

Ubiquitous motion sensors in shoes and clothing are becoming more prevalent. This new data stream opens a large opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of human movement. This paper describes the development and validation of an algorithm to calculate reactive strength index (RSI) from an accelerometer mounted at the ankle. Compared to the gold standard force-plate, the accelerometer and algorithm RSI had r = 0.98 , mean difference=0.001 m/sec and a confidence interval ranging from 0.12 to −0.11 m/sec. Difficulty in accurately identifying take-off using the accelerometer was the main source of measurement error.

The slowing pace of performance improvement in the commonly available processors is a cause of concern amongst many computational scientists. This combined with the ever increasing need for computational power has caused us to turn to alternative architectures in search of performance gains. Two main candidates were the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) and the Cell Broadband Engine (CELL BE) architecture. This paper focuses on the latter, outlining the architecture and basic programming paradigms, and also contains performance comparison of algorithms currently developed by our team.

This paper presents an overview of recent work by the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) in algorithm development for parameter estimation, detection, and classification of localized aerosols in the atmosphere using information provided by multiple-wavelength range-resolved lidar. The motivation for this work is the need to detect, locate, and identify potentially toxic atmospheric aerosols at safe standoff ranges using time-series data collected at a discrete set of CO2 laser wavelengths. The paper describes examples this processing derived from an extensive set of data collected by ECBC during JBSDS field-testing at Dugway Proving Ground.

Fatigue damage sensing and measurement in aluminum alloys is critical to estimating the residual useful lifetime of a range of aircraft structural components. In this work, we present electrical impedance and ultrasonic measurements in aluminum alloy 2024 that has been fatigued under high cycle conditions. While ultrasonic measurements can indicate fatigue-induced damage through changes in stiffness, the primary indicator is ultrasonic attenuation. We have used laser ultrasonic methods to investigate changes in ultrasonic attenuation since simultaneous measurement of longitudinal and shear properties provides opportunities to develop classification algorithms that can estimate the degree of damage. Electrical impedance measurements are sensitive to changes in the conductivity and permittivity of materials - both are affected by the microstructural damage processes related to fatigue. By employing spectral analysis of impedance over a range of frequencies, resonance peaks can be identified that directly reflect the damage state in the material. In order to compare the impedance and ultrasonic measurements for samples subjected to tension testing, we use processing and classification tools that are matched to the time-varying spectral nature of the measurements. Specifically, we process the measurements to extract time-frequency features and estimate stochastic variation properties to be used in robust classification algorithms. Results are presented for fatigue damage identification in aluminum lug joint specimens.

In many cases one can faced with situation of unknown and unstable statistical models of signals and interferences. It is known that markovian processes give good chance for simulation of random processes with non-Gaussian distribution. In this paper the basic approaches to synthesis of signal detection algorithms are considered under the conditions of parametrical aprioristic uncertainty of both signal and interference situations.

Automatic target detection and recognition (ATD/ATR) can be considered one of the most sought after goals in image exploitation. There are no shortage of "good" algorithms in ATD/ATR on paper, yet the problem remains that an algorithm cannot be applied directly to different scenario and expect a similar success rate. One can attribute the difficulties in ATD/ATR to the ambiguity of the definition of "target", and the specific choice of image data and parameters in the design of the algorithms. We propose a general purpose approach to the problem in that we do not specify what a target is, except that it will be chosen by a user from a number of detected anomalies at the end of the classification cycle. At this time, a user can specify a number of attributes to be associated with a candidate target. There is a learning phase where the algorithm and the discriminating parameters are tuned based on the characteristics of the image data and the classification methods. There are a number of attributes associated with a target, both in spectral and spatial values, which can be set by a user. The number of bands used for input can be varied;however it is limited to three to seven bands at this point. Target recognition is achieved when a target candidate has a passing figure of merit, which again is defined by the user. It is hoped that this approach can provide a framework of ATD/ATR with greatest flexibility in algorithm re-use.
