The primary purpose of this paper is to present the theories leading to the development of a semiactive adaptive controller for nonlinear systems. The adaptive algorithm developed in this paper is applied to one class of nonlinear vibration systems, namely semiactive base-excited vibration isolation systems. The algorithm includes the on-line system identification and the adaptation of the control signal. Finally, the stability of the semiactive adaptive system is presented.

We propose a modified LMS algorithm for adaptive feedforward control with actuator limits. Unlike the leaky LMS method, which limits the controller effort by introducing an auxiliary cost, in the proposed algorithm we maintain the cost as the performance measurement. We derive the true stochastic gradient of the cost for systems with saturation with respect to the filter coefficients and obtain an adaptation rule very close to that of the filtered-x algorithm, but in the proposed algorithm, the reference filter is a time-varying modification of the secondary channel. In simulations of an active vibration isolation system with actuator limits, the proposed algorithm attains better performance than that attained by the leaky LMS algorithm.

The US Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) is the leader in development of military systems for chemical and biological defense, in collaboration with all Services, other Government laboratories, academia, and industry. Chemical and biological optical sensing principles, unique capabilities, state-of-the-art sensors, and emerging technologies will be discussed. In order to acquire highly quantified data, study the effects of variables such as particle size distribution on backscatter coefficients, perform iterative aerosol algorithm development, and characterize breadboards, a novel "windowless" Vortex Chamber utilizing air curtains was developed and built at ECBC. The chamber has been successfully shown to contain a cloud of known size, concentration, and particle size distribution for 10-15 minutes. Near-term plans are focused on characterization of breadboards for standoff bio discrimination and deducing absolute backscatter coefficients from Vortex Chamber data.

Multimedia communication and streaming media services will become mainstream network infrastructure applications in the coming decade. However, there are many challenges that must be overcome. These challenges include the Internet's limited ability to handle real-time, low-latency media streams, the need for media security, and an uncertainty of the killer app. The nature of these challenges lends itself to enabling technology innovations in the media delivery and media processing space. Specifically, we envision an overlay infrastructure that supports networked media services that couple media delivery with in-network media processing. The media overlay should be programmable to allow rapid deployment of new applications and services and manageable so as to support the evolving requirements of the resulting usage models. Furthermore, the media overlay should allow for the delivery of protected media content for applications that have security requirements. A properly architected infrastructure can enable real-time multimedia communication and streaming media services in light of the inherent challenges.

Air Force Research Labs, Sensors Directorate has constructed and tested a coherent imaging system. The Laservision coherent imaging system resolution goals arc compatible with long range target identification based on the image characteristics of the target. The system received reflected coherent light from the laser using an optical telescope, which fed a CCD detector to collect the scene intensity. Registration of individual images remains a significant problem in the generation of accurate images collected using coherent imaging systems. An investigation of the performance of an image registration algorithm was conducted using dates collected from a, coherent optical imaging. The algorithm under study was implemented on a general-purpose computer running the MATLAB simulation environment. This paper documents the performance of the proposed technique compared to that of the cross-correlation algorithm.

Robust and accurate segmentation methods are important for the computerized evaluation of medical images. For treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, joint damage assessment in radiographs of hands is frequently used for monitoring disease progression. Current clinical scoring methods are based on visual measurements that are time-consuming and subject to intra and inter-reader variance. A solution may be found in the development of partially automated assessment procedures. This requires reliable segmentation algorithms. Our work demonstrates a se-mentation method based on multiple connected active appearance models (AAM) with multiple search steps using different quality levels. The quality level can be regulated by setting the image resolution and the number of landmarks in the AAMs. We performed experiments using two models of different quality levels for shape and texture information. Both models included AAMs for the carpal region, the metacarpals, and all phalanges. By starting an iterative search with the faster, low-quality model, we were able to determine the initial parameters of the second, high-quality model. After the second search, the results showed successful segmentation for 22 of 30 test images. For these images, 70% of the landmarks were found within 1.3 mm difference from manual placement by an expert. The multi-level search approach resulted in a reduction of 50% in calculation time compared to a search using a single model. Results are expected to improve when the model is refined by increasing the number of training examples and the resolution of the models.

FPGA technology enjoys both the high performance of a dedicated hardware solution and the flexibility of software that is offered by its inherent reprogrammability feature. Image Processing is one application area that can benefit greatly from FPGAs performance and flexibility. This paper presents the design and implementation of a high-level reconfigurable image coprocessor on FPGAs using the Handel-C hardware language. The latter allows non hardware specialists to program FPGAs at a high level using a C-like syntax, albeit with hardware architectures in mind. It hence allows for rapid development of FPGA applications. This is illustrated in this paper in the case of an image coprocessor whose instruction set is based on the operators of Image Algebra. Central to this instruction set are the five core neighbourhood operations of Image Algebra: Convolution, Additive Maximum, Additive Minimum, Multiplicative Maximum and Multiplicative Minimum. These are parameterised in terms of the neighbourhood operation's window coefficients, window size and image size. Handel-C language was used to design the Image Coprocessor with a fully tested prototype on Celoxica Virtex-E based RC1000-PP PCI board. The paper presents an overview of the approach used to generate FPGA architectures dynamically for the Image Coprocessor using Handel-C, as well as a sample of implementation results.

This paper presents a new design of piezoelectric friction damper, which consists of tube piezoceramic stack actuators, load cells, preload bolts, brass sheets, spring washers and slotted bolted connection. A semi-active control strategy for variable friction dampers based on an improved suboptimal Bang-Bang control algorithm presented in this paper is also developed. By using genetic algorithm, the amplitudes of the control and preloading friction forces in the control system are obtained for enhancing the seismic performance of the controlled structures. The proposed approach is applied to a three-story building with a variable friction damper installed in the first story. The numerical results indicate that more reduction of the peak accelerations under seismic excitations and a better adaptability can be achieved than those of the unmodified controller.

Achieving the goal of collaboration and synchronization of efforts across the total systems life cycle will require the Army to integrate and harmonize acquisition, training, testing and analytical modeling and simulation (M&S) capabilities in an unprecedented manner. A prerequisite to achieving the desired level of synchronization is the requirement to complete a technology needs assessment that identifies, characterizes, assesses, and prioritizes M&S Science and Technology (S&T) needs that are traceable to recognized Army needs. The Battle Command, Simulation and Experimentation (BCSE) Directorate in the Army's Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7 has taken the initiative to complete a series of technology assessments and is creating a corresponding series of focus area centric Army M&S S&T Investment Plans to guide investments and to impact institutional processes external to the G-3/5/7. This paper describes the Army M&S S&T Investment Plan creation process for the Battle Command focus area.

In fan-beam computed tomography (CT), one may be interested in image reconstruction in a region of interest (ROI) from truncated data acquired over an angular range less than half-scan data. We developed recently a backprojection filtration (BPF) algorithm to reconstruct an ROI image from reduced scan data containing data truncations. In a reduced scan., the truncated data may still contain redundancy. In this work, we describe a new algorithm that can exploit data redundancy in truncated data for potentially suppressing the aliasing and noise artifacts in reconstructed images. We have performed numerical studies to demonstrate the BPF algorithm.
