In this paper, a unified framework of image reconstruction from both fan-beam and cone-beam projections is formulated by using intermediate functions. The intermediate function has an imaginary part and a real part. The causality principle is used to prove that the imaginary and real part is mutually linked by a Hilbert transform. Using this link, it is shown that image can be reconstructed by using either the real part or the imaginary part of the intermediate function. Thus there exist two fundamental image reconstruction schemes in image reconstruction from divergent beam projections. One scheme only uses the imaginary part of the intermediate function, while the other scheme only uses the real part. Two schemes are dual to each other by a Hilbert transform in intermediate functions. Thus this dual nature is called H-duality. One of the paired dual formulas explicitly allows data truncation, while the other one does not. However, they are equivalent in the sense that both of them are mathematically exact image reconstruction formulas provided the measured data is sufficient for both formulas and is free from noise. Practically, a fan-beam image reconstruction formula is identified to solve the fan-beam data truncation problem.

Registering video imagery in real-time is a demanding process. Multispectral imagery adds complexity due to the variances between different bands. This paper demonstrates a process that registers airborne multispectral imagery at a rate of thirty frames per second. It can create both mosaics and multispectral sets from a camera that captures a cycle of spectral bands with each spectral band in a separate video frame. A series of phase correlation measurements provides subpixel accuracy. Roll, pitch and yaw variances are corrected with complex polynomial interpolation.

A thermal technique and system for measuring the depth of a crack in metal is described. The transient heat signature of a moving infrared laser source is analyzed using three intensity-based algorithms and the limitations of this approach are examined. Experimental results demonstrate capability to measure EDM-notches 0.06 inches deep and shallower, and the variability of the system agrees with the theoretical. The advantages and disadvantages of this technique over other non-destructive testing (NDT) methods are also outlined.

We have developed a method for clustering features into objects by taking those features which include intensity, orientations and colors from the most salient points in an image as determined by our biologically motivated saliency program. We can train a program to cluster these features by only supplying as training input the number of objects that should appear in an image. We do this by clustering from a technique that involves linking nodes in a minimum spanning tree by not only distance, but by a density metric as well. We can then form classes over objects or object segmentation in a novel validation set by training over a set of seven soft and hard parameters. We discus as well the uses of such a flexible method in landmark based navigation since a robot using such a method may have a better ability to generalize over the features and objects.

When wireless sensors are capable of variable transmit power and are battery powered, it is important to select the appropriate transmit power level for the node. Lowering the transmit power of the sensor nodes imposes a natural clustering on the network and has been shown to improve throughput of the network. However, a common transmit power level is not appropriate for inhomogeneous networks. A possible fitness-based approach, motivated by an evolutionary optimization technique, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is proposed and extended in a novel way to determine the appropriate transmit power of each sensor node. A distributed version of PSO is developed and explored using experimental fitness to achieve an approximation of least-cost connectivity.

This paper describes a study performed with the objective of investigating Concurrent Constraint Programming (CCP) as the main tool for the design and the implementation of a software path planner. The main features of the path planning are introduced along with some modeling and implementation issues. The CCP approach is motivated by the facility of translating complex models with domain specific features into efficient implementations. In order to use CCP, the path planning is formalized as a constraint satisfaction problem by defining variables, domains, and constraints. The proposed solution is as general as possible, and it is widely applicable in several contexts. A demo application has been implemented, and it is described in this paper. The application comes with a graphical interface that allow the user to define the mission constraints. The output of the application is a path plan, i.e. a list of waypoints that can also be displayed on a geographical map. The estimated path length, fuel consumption, and path risk are given as well.

Hierarchical levels of details (HLODs) have proven to be an efficient way to visualize complex environments and models even in an out-of-core system. Large objects are partitioned into a spatial hierarchy and on each node a level of detail is generated for efficient view-dependent rendering. To ensure correct matching between adjacent nodes in the hierarchy care has to be taken to prevent cracks along the cuts. This either leads to severe simplification constraints at the cuts and thus to a significantly higher number of triangles or the need for a costly runtime stitching of these nodes. In this paper we present an out-of-core visualization algorithm that overcomes this problem by filling the cracks generated by the simplification algorithm with appropriately shaded fat borders. Furthermore, several minor yet important improvements of previous approaches are made. This way we come up with a simple nevertheless efficient view-dependent rendering technique which allows for the natural incorporation of state-of-the-art culling, simplification, compression and prefetching techniques.

Conflict between groups of armed men is as old as recorded history. Effective reasoning and decision-making are fundamental to the successful execution of military operations. These activities are of paramount importance, given the high-stakes nature of conflict;most especially in this modern era of asymmetric threats, and unconventionally armed rogue states. Yet as high as the stakes are, there does not exist a sufficiently formal military theory of reasoning and decision-making that instantiates modern war-fighting doctrine. Large bodies of knowledge on reasoning and decision-making exist, but they are not integrated, and they (to the author's knowledge) have not been cast effectively into a military context. Herein, I describe a new theory of military rationality which fully captures the reasoning and decision-making processes of homo militius, military man. The goal of the third generation wargaming effort at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Information Directorate is to produce a high-fidelity simulation of conflict environments in order to facilitate a new brand of highly immersive training for our war-fighters and supporting personnel. This environment will be populated by a new breed of intelligent agents that we affectionately call ASC-ME's (Advanced Synthetic Characters for Military Environments). I shall briefly highlight the philosophical foundations for the construction of such entities, and the formal techniques by which they may be modelled and engineered.

Proton-proton collisions in the LHC accelerator will occur every 25ns. The muon trigger of the CMS experiment will have to analyse data from 200000 channels of RPC chambers every bunch crossing. Special compression algorithm has been developed to transmit the data from the chambers to the trigger electronics through optical fibers. The data flow has been simulated, and the data loss estimate is presented.

We proposed a new reconstruction algorithm for image reconstruction from helical cone-beam data only within the Tam-Danielsson window, thus allowing the potential reduction of radiation dose to patients. The new algorithm can be expressed as two terms. The first term dominates the contribution to the reconstructed image, and the second term provides only a small correction. In fact. such a correction is generally negligible as compared to that from the first term and introduces a detectable DC-type shift to the reconstructed images only in the situations where the ratio between the size of field of view and the helical radius approaches to 0.625, which is the limit to the validity of the first term. Based on the Grangeat formula. we have developed an algorithm to calculate the correction (i.e., the second) term from the data within the window.
