This paper deals with the problem of estimating multiple motions at points where these motions are overlaid. We present a new approach that is based on block-matching and can deal with both transparent motions and occlusions. We derive a block-matching constraint for an arbitrary number of moving layers. We use this constraint to design a hierarchical algorithm that can distinguish between the occurrence of single, transparent, and occluded motions and can thus select the appropriate local motion model. The algorithm adapts to the amount of noise in the image sequence by use of a statistical confidence test. The algorithm is further extended to deal with very noisy images by using a regularization based on Markov Random Fields. Performance is demonstrated on image sequences synthesized from natural textures with high levels of additive dynamic noise.

Disassembly, as the process of systematic removal of desirable constituent parts from an assembly, is of growing importance due to the increasing environmental and economic pressures. Designing and improving disassembly process towards a more economic manner is worthwhile investigating. This paper extends our previous work on human factors in disassembly. More specifically, a Fuzzy Petri Net (FPN) is proposed to mathematically model uncertainties in the disassembly process due to the variations in operator skill level and product condition. An adaptive fuzzy system is further developed for the decision-making in disassembly process planning (DPP), where a learning mechanism is engaged to monitor the quality of various parameter estimates and exploit the past "knowledge" regarding uncertainties. This idea is exemplified through the disassembly of a discarded product with three components.

Current uncertainties in the role of aerosols and clouds in the Earth's climate system limit our abilities to model the climate system and predict climate change. These limitations are due primarily to difficulties of adequately measuring aerosols and clouds on a global scale. The A-train satellites (Aqua, CALIPSO, CloudSat, PARASOL, and Aura) will provide an unprecedented opportunity to address these uncertainties. The various active and passive sensors of the A-train will use a variety of measurement techniques to provide comprehensive observations of the multi-dimensional properties of clouds and aerosols. However, to fully achieve the potential of this ensemble requires a robust data analysis framework to optimally and efficiently map these individual measurements into a comprehensive set of cloud and aerosol physical properties. In this work we introduce the Multi-Instrument Data Analysis and Synthesis (MIDAS) project, whose goal is to develop a suite of physically sound and computationally efficient algorithms that will combine active and passive remote sensing data in order to produce improved assessments of aerosol and cloud radiative and microphysical properties. These algorithms include (a) the development of an intelligent feature detection algorithm that combines inputs from both active and passive sensors, and (b) identifying recognizable multi-instrument signatures related to aerosol and cloud type derived from clusters of image pixels and the associated vertical profile information. Classification of these signatures will lead to the automated identification of aerosol and cloud types. Testing of these new algorithms is done using currently existing and readily available active and passive measurements from the Cloud Physics Lidar and the MODIS Airborne Simulator, which simulate, respectively, the CALIPSO and MODIS A-train instruments.

An important breakthrough in helical cone-beam reconstruction is the development of Katsevich's algorithms. which appear to have numerous advantages over the algorithms developed previously. The original algorithm proposed by Katsevich has a simple form and requires only once the computation of the data filtering. It, however, invokes a derivative of the data function with respect to the rotation angle along the helical trajectory and thus makes the algorithm numerically susceptible to the sample aliasing along the helical trajectory. A modified version of the algorithm later developed by Katsevich that avoids the explicit computation of the derivative of the data function along the helical trajectory. However, this modified algorithm contains more terms than does the original algorithm and involves two different filtering of the data function. Therefore, this modified algorithm is computationally more complex and demanding than does the original Katsevich''s algorithm. In this work, based upon the original Katsevich's algorithm, we present a new algorithm that not only avoids explicit computation of the derivative of the data function along the helical trajectory but also requires only one filtering of the data function. Therefore, in general, our algorithm is quantitatively more accurate than the original Katsevich's algorithm and is computationally more efficient than the modified Katsevich's algorithm.

In this paper, we develop a new algorithm that enables the reconstruction of a region of interest (ROI) in X-ray Computed Tomography (CT), in case only a local region of the object is to be imaged. The method uses a Gaussian window function in order to reduce the X-ray attenuation from the region outside the ROI. The method uses almost completely local data and reduces the amount of exposure significantly. Many algorithms can be easily combined with our algorithm in order to improve the reconstruction quality. The main goal of this work is to reduce the bias in order to allow quantitative analysis of the CT-images.

Focus of attention is often attributed to biological vision system where the entire field of view is first monitored and then the attention is,focused to the object of interest. We propose using a similar approach for object recognition in a color image sequence. The intention is to locate an object based on a prior motive, concentrate on the detected object so that the imaging device can be guided toward it. We use the abilities of the intelligent image analysis framework developed in our laboratory to generate an algorithm dynamically to detect the particular type of object based on the user's object description. The proposed method uses color clustering along with segmentation. The segmented image with labeled regions is used to calculate the shape descriptor parameters. These and the color information are matched with the input description. Gaze is then controlled by, issuing camera movement commands as appropriate. We present some preliminary results that demonstrate the success of this approach.

An implemented system to evaluate the deformations that a CD under thermal loads undergoes is described, and the developed software of evaluation is discussed. interferograms obtained for each deformation state are showed and the graphs of deformation like relief maps, with the height of the deformations codified in color code, too.

Registration of individual images remains a significant problem in the generation of accurate images collected using coherent imaging systems. An investigation of the performance of eight distinct image registration algorithms was conducted using data collected from a coherent optical imaging system developed by the Air Force Research Laboratories, Sensors Division, ARFL/SNJT. A total of 400 images of three distinct scenes were collected by SRJT and made available to the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) for this study. Scenery was collected at 3 and 10 kilometers of wheeled vehicles supporting resolution and uniform target boards. The algorithms under study were developed by scientists and engineers at AFRL, and had varying levels of performance in terms of image miss-registration and execution time. These eight algorithms were implemented on a general-purpose computer running the MATLAB simulation environment. The algorithms compared included: block-match, cross-correlation, cross-search, directional-search, gradient-based, hierarchical-block, three-step, and vector-block methods. It was found that the cross-correlation, gradient-based and vector-block search techniques typically had the lowest error metric. The vector-block and cross-correlation methods proved to have the fastest execution times, while not suffering significant error degradation when estimating the registration shift of the test images.

Untethered, underwater sensors, deployed for event detection and tracking and operating in an autonomous mode will be required to self-assemble into a configuration, which optimizes their coverage, effectively minimizing the probability that an event in the target area goes undetected. This organized, cooperative, and autonomous, spreading-out of the sensors is complicated due to sensors localized communication. A given sensor will not in general have position and velocity information for all sensors, but only for those in its communication area. A possible approach to this problem, motivated by an evolutionary optimization technique, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is proposed and extended in a novel way. A distributed version of PSO is developed. A distributed version of PSO is explored using experimental fitness to address the coverage problem in a two dimensional area.

This paper considers the problem of forming a preset surface of a segmented mirror of a telescope. An iteration algorithm based on analysis of the interference pattern of the radiation reflected from the mirror is used for phasing the mirror segments. At every iteration, the current interferogram is compared with the reference one obtained for the surface of a preset shape. The value of the control goal function, whose minimum is determined in the algorithm, decreases with the decreasing discrepancy between the interferograms. This technique provides for formation of a plane-reflecting surface of the mirror, if the relative displacement of segments does not exceed the half wavelength. It is shown that to extend the range of acceptable displacements, it is necessary to introduce additional sources of radiation of specially chosen wavelengths. In such a case, the dynamic range of the algorithm can be extended up to 30 mum.
