Traditional methods for deriving wind vectors from sequential geostationary satellite imagery involve the tracking of coherent clouds and moisture features in single channels (spectral bands). While this data source has proven to be important to global wind analyses, the approach is limited in two major ways: 1) The heights assigned to the vectors are not precise, leading to problems in data assimilation, and 2) Vertical profiles of the wind at a given geo-location are not provided, adding further stress to objective data assimilation (difficulty with single-level observations). A new approach to deriving winds from sequential satellite observations is being advanced at CIMSS. The method utilizes the same basic automated tracking code developed at CIMSS, however the input to the algorithm is in the form of constant-level moisture analyses derived from hyperspectral sounding information. Since the altitude of the features being tracked are already determined by the soundings/analyses, the height assignment ambiguities associated with the traditional approaches are ameliorated. Furthermore, the hyperspectral infrared (IR) information provides detailed vertical profiles of moisture where there are no clouds. This allows analyses of moisture at multiple vertical levels, which can then be used in an attempt to retrieve vertical profiles of wind. To date, the new scheme has been trialed on simulated data from GIFTS, and on one case of real data from airborne observations provided by the NAST-I instrument. From these first attempts, the "proof of concept" is successfully illustrated, and will be shown in the presentation.

In this paper, we present a cognitive agent framework (CAF) based on swarm intelligence and self-organization principles., and demonstrate it through collaborative processing for target classification in sensor networks. The framework involves integrated designs to provide both cognitive behavior at the organization level to conquer complexity and reactive behavior at the individual agent level to retain simplicity. The design tackles various problems in the current information processing systems, including overly complex systems, maintenance difficulties;increasing vulnerability to attack, lack of capability to tolerate faults, and inability to identify and cope with low-frequency patterns. An important and distinguishing point of the presented work from classical AI research is that the acquired intelligence does not pertain to distinct individuals but to groups. It also deviates from multi-agent systems (MAS) due to sheer quantity of extremely simple agents we are able to accommodate, to the degree that some loss of coordination messages and behavior of faulty/compromised agents will not affect the collective decision made by the group.

This contribution describes the results of a collaboration the objective of which was to technically validate an assessment approach for automatic target recognition (ATR) components'. The approach is intended to become a standard for component specification and acceptance test during development and procurement and includes the provision of appropriate tools and data. The collaboration was coordinated by the German Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement (BWB). Partners besides the BWB and the group Assessment of Fraunhofer IITB were ATR development groups of EADS Military Aircraft, EADS Dornier and Fraunhofer IITB. The ATR development group of IITB contributed ATR results and developer's expertise to the collaboration while the industrial partners contributed ATR results and their expertise both from the developer's and the system integrator's point of view. The assessment group's responsibility was to provide task-relevant data and assessment tools, to carry out performance analyses and to document major milestones. The result of the collaboration is twofold: the validation of the assessment approach by all partners, and two approved benchmarks for specific military target detection tasks in IR and SAR images. The tasks are defined by parameters including sensor, viewing geometries, targets, background etc. The benchmarks contain IR and SAR sensor data, respectively. Truth data and assessment tools are available for performance measurement and analysis. The datasets are split into training data for ATR optimization and test data exclusively used for performance analyses during acceptance tests. Training data and assessment tools are available for ATR developers upon request. The work reported in this contribution was supported by the German Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement (BWB), EADS Dornier, and EADS Military Aircraft.

A low cost 16x16 un-cooled pyroelectric detector array, allied with advanced tracking and detection algorithms, has enabled the development of a universal detector with a wide range of applications in people monitoring and homeland security. Violation of access control systems, whether controlled by proximity card, biometrics, swipe card or similar, may occur by 'tailgating' or 'piggybacking' where an `approved' entrant with a valid entry card is accompanied by a closely spaced 'non-approved' entrant. The violation may be under duress, where the accompanying person is attempting to enter a secure facility by force or threat. Alternatively, the violation may be benign where staff members collude either through habit or lassitude, either with each other or with third parties, without considering the security consequences. Examples of the latter could include schools, hospitals or maternity homes. The 16x16 pyroelectric array is integrated into a detector or imaging system which incorporates data processing, target extraction and decision making algorithms. The algorithms apply interpolation to the array output, allowing a higher level of resolution than might otherwise be expected from such a low resolution array. The pyroelectric detection principle means that the detection will work in variable light conditions and even in complete darkness, if required. The algorithms can monitor the shape, form, temperature and number of persons in the scene and utilise this information to determine whether a violation has occurred or not. As people are seen as `hot blobs' and are not individually recognisable, civil liberties are not infringed in the detection process. The output from the detector is a simple alarm signal which may act as input to the access control system as an alert or to trigger CCTV image display and storage. The applications for a tailgate detector can be demonstrated across many medium security applications where there are no physical means to prevent this

In the framework of computer-aided diagnosis, pulmonary airway investigation based on multi-detector computerized tomography (MDCT) requires the development of specific tools for data interaction and analysis. The 3D segmentation of the bronchial tree provides radiologists with appropriate examination modalities such as CT bronchography, for a global analysis, or virtual endoscopy, for a local endoluminal diagnosis. Focusing on the latter modality, this paper proposes a set of advanced navigation and investigation tools based on the automatic extraction of the central axis (CA) of the 3D segmented airways. In the case of complex branching structures, Such as the bronchial tree, the automatic CA computation is a challenging problem raising several difficulties related to geometry and topology preservation. In this respect, an original approach is presented, combining 3D distance map information and geodesic front propagation in order to accurately detect branching points and to preserve the original 3D topology of the airways, irrespective to both caliber variability with the bronchial order and to bronchial wall irregularities. The CA information is represented as a multi-valued and hierarchic tree structure, making possible automatic trajectory Computation between two given points, bronchial caliber estimation in the plane orthogonal to the bronchus axis at a given location, branch indexation, and so on. These applications are Illustrated on clinical data including both normal and pathological airway morphologies.

Transform coding plays a central role in image and video coding technologies. Various transforms. whether fixed or adaptive, have been utilized for video compression. However, these transforms are inherently suboptimal in a coding-efficiency sense, given that their design does not explicitly take into account the entire transform coding model. Thus, commonly used transforms such as the DCT have desirable properties, but were designed without the full consideration of the other transform coding elements including quantization and entropy coding. Although these transforms have good performance in a rate-distortion sense, as demonstrated by today's image and video coding standards, we show that superior transforms can be designed based on the complete transform coding model. We present a new class of transforms called coding-adaptive transforms, that are derived under an optimality criterion which incorporates the elements of transform coding and is formulated for coding efficiency. Additionally characteristics of the new transforms such as adaptivity, generalization, and robustness are discussed.

Stokes vector component versus elementary factor performance in a target detection algorithm

Polarization based detection is often accomplished by using two separate components, reflectivity/emissivity and polarization, as detection algorithm inputs. These are Stokes vector components and are derived from elementary factors that represent energy collected with different polarizers. The elementary factors are added to produce the reflectivity/emissivity component and subtracted to produce the polarization component. Using the reflectivity/emissivity and polarization clearly addresses the advantage of using polarization as an added discriminant. However. depending on the detection algorithm, it may be better to use the elementary factors as input into a detection algorithm. A constant false alarm rate detection algorithm derived from a maximum likelihood is used as a foundation for judging target detection with these two different inputs. The results are presented for detecting man-made objects on natural backgrounds. The data cover two incident light sources: natural light, which is unpolarized and a linearly polarized laser. Detection using the elementary factors is shown to be consistent with detection using the Stokes vector components and is shown to decrease the false alarm rate.

The problem of multisensor-multitarget tracking is mainly dependent on the data association. In this paper, the fuzzy logic-based single target tracker is extended to the multitarget case. Multitarget scenario incorporating four targets both maneuvering and non-maneuvering in the same surveillance volume is analyzed. The proposed multitarget tracker, also called the Multitarget Tracking - Fuzzy Data Association "MTT-FDA" tracker, employs fuzzy variables capable of resolving the problem of multiple crossing targets. These variables are the rate of change of the target states over a sliding window. It has been observed through simulations that a window size of five time scans is sufficient to yield acceptable results. Moreover, the proposed tracker was exercised against the realistic multitarget data set. The results reveal that the proposed fuzzy tracker yields superior performance compared to other existing tracking schemes.

We formulated a new dynamic range compression (DRC) processing algorithm that can be applied to chest CT images. This new DRC processing algorithm was based on an existing DRC processing algorithm. The new DRC processing algorithm, which we named "Generalized DRC processing," is categorized as shift variant image processing and can explicitly utilize the results of anatomical region recognition. In addition, the application of the method is not restricted to the DRC. The method can enhance high frequency signals only in the lung due to its shift variant characteristics. Therefore, higher image quality than conventional USM is obtained. When using the Generalized DRC processing for chest CT images, the representation of soft tissues will be improved by roughly recognizing the lung region without affecting the density and contrast of the lung region. Unlike the conventional double gamma method, our method significantly reduces artifacts. In recent years, the reading volume of chest CT images is greatly increasing. In view of this we propose this method, which reduces the number of windowing on a viewer. We believe that this will improve the total reading efficiency, and especially, will allow more efficient lung cancer CT screening.

Lessons learned from the implementation, operation, and science processing from a number of successful NASA LaRC remote sensing experiments will be presented. Despite good flight heritage, well-known designs, and known data retrieval algorithms these experiments remain challenging. The authors will summarize common lessons learned from different project phases and discuss these lessons in the context of planned and future missions with emphasis on improving Level 1 data quality.
