In this paper the design of a high-throughput imaging spectrometer for use in astronomical applications is proposed and investigated. The method of spectral separation used in this new design does not rely on dispersion through a grating or path length difference in an interferometer. Instead, the chromatic aberration found in a common lens is used to process the input scene through many different spectral point-spread functions, which produce a collection of broadband images. The spectral separation is achieved through a spectral/spatial recovery algorithm. Because there is no grating to block the light or no beam-splitter to reflect it back out of the telescope, a system built on this principle of spectral separation can achieve a throughput in excess of 90%. The spectral diversity in the point-spread functions is achieved by changing the distance between the lenses and detector in the imaging system. The result of these changes is a different chromatic aberration for each wavelength. From a set of measurements taken with different chromatic aberrations, a spectral/spatial recovery algorithm is developed that is capable of extracting spectral information from a set of broadband images that have been processed through different realizations of chromatic aberration. A point design for this spectral separation concept is presented and tested through simulation. The algorithm is tested using simulated scene data from the point design of a small-extended object and a point source.

A fundamental task in video analysis is to organize and index multimedia data in a meaningful manner so as to facilitate user access for tasks such as browsing and retrieval. This paper addresses the problem of automatic index generation of movie databases based on audiovisual information. In particular, given a movie we first extract key movie events including two-speaker dialog scenes, multiple-speaker dialog scenes and hybrid scenes by using the proposed window-based sweep algorithm and the K-means clustering algorithm. Following event detection, the identity of each individual speaker in a dialog scene is recognized based on a statistical maximum likelihood approach. The identification relies on the likelihood ratio calculation between the incoming speech data and Gaussian mixture models of the speakers and the background. It is evident that the event and the speaker identity information will serve as a crucial part of the movie index table. Preliminary experimental results show that, by integrating multiple media information, we can obtain robust and meaningful event detection and speaker identification results.

The Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is an effective way to analyze nonstationary signals and to localize and characterize singularities. Fast algorithms have already been developed to compute the CWT at integer time points and dyadic or integer scales. We propose here a new method that is based on a B-spline expansion of both the signal and the analysis wavelet and that allows the CWT computation at arbitrary scales. Its complexity is O(N), where N represents the size of the input signal;in other words, the cost is independent of the scale factor. Moreover;the algorithm lends itself well to a parallel implementation.

A practical method for creating a high dimensional index structure that adapts to the data distribution and scales well with the database size, is presented. Typical media descriptors, such as texture features, are high dimensional and are not uniformly distributed in the feature space. The performance of many existing methods degrade if the data is not uniformly distributed. The proposed method offers an efficient solution to this problem. First, the data's marginal distribution along each dimension is characterized using a Gaussian mixture model. The parameters of this model are estimated using the well known Expectation-Maximization (EM) method. These model parameters can also be estimated sequentially for on-line updating. Using the marginal distribution information, each of the data dimensions can be partitioned such that each bin contains approximately an equal number of objects. Experimental results on a real image texture data set are presented. Comparisons with existing techniques, such as the well known VA-File, demonstrate a significant overall improvement.

Hardware and software advancement in computer technology enable the development of faster and better application of laser inspection technology in the field of pipe surface corrosion inspection as well as weld profile inspection. Several software programs for inspecting surface defects on pipelines have been developed by EWI within the past few years. The most recent development, utilizing an algorithm that accommodates for normal pipeline deviations such as bulges, bends and dents, was developed and incorporated into a mechanical pipeline-scanning device. This automated laser-based corrosion mapping system was designed for inspection of corroded surfaces of in-service pipelines. The new system has been used successfully for external measurement of exposed pipelines. The system is based on the use of laser spot range finders on a circumferential slide carried by a magnetically attached crawler. The crawler has the ability to auto steer to maintain its circumferential position on the pipe, and the circumferential slide allows a 100-degree segment of the pipe to be scanned. The portable system is able to map corrosion profiles in the presence of surface deviations such as ripples, bulges, and welds. A graphical user interface (GUI) allows easy data display, analysis and archiving. Results generated with the system are used in corrosion assessment procedures such as RSTRENG((3)) to evaluate the condition of the pipeline and suggest the appropriate remedial action, if required.

We demonstrate the use of phase-shifting interferometry in OCT to determine the optical phase and fringe visibility within the coherence envelope. Phase-shifting algorithms provide both the optical phase and visibility from a series of intensity measurements corresponding to controlled phase shifts. In addition to providing phase information which supplements the visibility or envelope data which is traditionally obtained in OCT, this technique will provide an independent, highly sensitive measurement of the coherence envelope which may be used for a precise determination of the source power spectrum.

In robust tumor recognition engine implementation, it is important to superimpose different types of MR images to verify the adequacy of treatment. Usually, the tumors in time-staggered MR images may vary in shape, format, orientation, angle, translation, scale and by a variety of other distortions. It is already known that various image registration techniques such as Affine transform suffers from lack of speed. Thus, the ability to extract distortion-invariant image features is highly desirable for improved speed and efficiency. We propose to explore distortion-invariant metadata extraction and subsequent classification of tumor in brain MR images.

The key element in the design of fast algorithms in numerical analysis and signal processing is the selection of an efficient approximation for the functions and operators involved. In this talk we will consider approximations using wavelet and multiwavelet bases as well as a new type of approximation for bandlimited functions using exponentials obtained via Generalized Gaussian quadratures. Analytically, the latter approximation corresponds to using the basis of the Prolate Spheroidal Wave functions. We will briefly comment on the future development of approximation techniques and the corresponding fast algorithms.

In this paper a generalized look-ahead logic algorithm for number conversion from signed-digit to its complement representation is developed. By property encoding the signed digits, all the operations are performed by binary logic, and unified logical expressions can be obtained for conversion from modified-signed-digit (MSD) to 2's complement, trinary signed-digit (TSD) to 3's complement, and quarternary signed-digit (QSD) to 4's complement. For optical implementation, a parallel logical array module using electron-trapping device is employed, which is suitable for realizing complex logic functions in the form of sum-of-product. The proposed algorithm and architecture are compatible with a general-purpose optoelectronic computing system.

The newly developed Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert Spectral Analysis method will be reviewed. The EMD is an adaptive decomposition with which any complicated data set can be decomposed into a finite and often small number of Intrinsic Mode Functions. Example of application on the chirp signal form the bat is given to illustrate the potential of the new method.
