We describe an application of color-based pattern matching, where a real-time vision system needs to detect and exactly localize textile patterns woven into carpet flooring material. These patterns are distributed on a large web in a periodic fashion. The task to be solved is recognition of these patterns by matching them with stored prototypes, computing the exact location and use this information to guide a cutting machine to produce perfect replica of desired tiles. The pattern matching part is challenging because of the presence of distortion, scaling, and rotation of the 2D patterns, and rather high demands on the localization accuracy. Also, the task needs to be solved under real-time constraints. We describe the building blocks used in our system. These are color-based segmentation of the patterns to achieve 2D representation in a graph-like manner, followed by graph-based matching. This block solved the graph-isomorphism problem in real-time tolerating distortions, additions, deletions, rotation, translation, and scale variations between the trained and tested versions of the patterns. We demonstrate the concept showing example images and matching results.

The design of sensing and control systems for two-dimensional industrial processes such as paper making, plastic film extrusion and metal rolling, has drawn extensively upon concepts from two-dimensional signal processing and image processing. The performance of two-dimensional control systems is discussed in terms of spatial and dynamic bandwidths and is illustrated by examples from the control of cross-directional variations on a plastic film extrusion line. By relating these bandwidths to the specification of the required quality of the finished film and typical disturbances that enter the process, specifications are developed for the design of the actuators, the sensing system and the control algorithm. It is shown that the current generation of control systems is not suitable for controlling variations over small areas of sheet, but a system which regulates over much smaller areas could be developed using recent developments in sensors and two-dimensional control algorithms. Authors propose a method to identify the mass matrix of a large building structure by using a small active dynamic damper, or equivalently, an active tuned mass damper. We modify the acceleration feedback algorithm, which was once developed for improving the dynamic damper's performance, with a different objective. The advantage of the dynamic damper is its size: it is so small that there is a possibility that we could create an extra-small device for measuring the mass of a large structure. We review the physical meaning of the acceleration feedback, and then we use a single-degree-of-freedom model to explain how to operate the device to examine the weight of a primary structure. Then, we extend this method to a multi-degree-of-freedom model so that we can measure its effective modal mass with respect to the location where this device is placed. The identification of the mass matrix of a large structure can be completed as we shift the observing points and determine the associated effective mass. Several numerical studies are also carried out to certify the proposed method.

Many multiscale methods have been developped during the last fifteen years, such the bi-orthogonal wavelet transform, the a trous algorithm, the ridgelet transform or the curvelet transform. Each of them is optimal to detect one kind of features. We present the Combined Transforms Method which allows us to combine several transformations in order to benefit of the advantages of each of them.

In many application areas of imaging sciences, object information captured in multi-dimensional images needs to be extracted, visualized, manipulated, and analyzed. These four groups of operations have been (and are being) intensively investigated, developed, and applied in a variety of applications. In this paper, after giving a brief overview of the four groups of operations, we put forth two main arguments: (1) Computers are digital, and most image acquisition and communication efforts at present are toward digital approaches. In the same vein, there are considerable advantages to taking an inherently digital approach to the above four groups of operations rather than using concepts based on continuous approximations. (2) Considering the fact that images are inherently fuzzy. to handle uncertainties and heterogeneity of object properties realistically, approaches based on fuzzy sets should be taken to the above four groups of operations. We give two examples in support of these arguments.

This paper considers the problem of wave propagation in a nonlinear elastic medium with a quadratic stress-strain relationship. The paper is limited to one-dimensional wave propagation. Under these conditions, the initial value problem is formulated into a hyperbolic system of conservation laws. The Riemann problem due to an initial step function excitation is considered first. Analytical solutions to the Riemann problem are obtained by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. In addition, a computer program is developed based on the high-resolution central scheme of Kurganov and Tadmor. The accuracy of this numerical procedure is verified by comparing the numerical results with the exact solutions. The second part of the paper considers several different types of initial excitations in order to determine special characteristics of the wave propagation due to material nonlinearity.

Sensors and computational capability have not reached the point to enable small robots to navigate autonomously in unconstrained outdoor environments at tactically useful speeds. This problem is greatly reduced, however, if a soldier can lead the robot through terrain that he knows it can traverse. An application of this concept is a small "pack-mule" robot that follows a foot soldier over outdoor terrain. The soldier would be responsible to avoid situations beyond the robot's limitations when encountered. Having learned the route, the robot could autonomously retrace the path carrying supplies and munitions. This would greatly reduce the soldier's workload under normal conditions. This paper presents a description of a developmental robot sensor system using low-cost commercial 3D vision and inertial sensors to address this application. The robot moves at fast walking speed and requires only short-range perception to accomplish its task. 3D-feature information is recorded on a composite route map that the robot uses to negotiate its local environment and retrace the path taught by the soldier leader.

Phase shifting mask technology will be necessary to produce integrated circuits at the 130 nm node using KrF wavelength steppers. in order to successfully accomplish this goal, it is necessary to detect and repair phase shifting defects that may occur in the manufacture of these reticles. An inspection algorithm has been developed to improve the phase shift defect detection rate of an UV reticle inspection system and is based upon the simultaneous use of the transmitted and reflected light signals. This paper describes the phase defect sensitivity improvement over transmitted light only pattern inspection results and simultaneous transmitted and reflected light based contamination inspection results.

We present a generic approach that identifies and differentiates among signals for wide range of problems. Originally our algorithm was developed to detect the presence of a specific vehicle belonging to a certain class via the analysis of the acoustic signals emitted while it is moving. A crucial factor in having a successful detection (no false alarm) is to construct signatures built from characteristic features that enable to discriminate between the class of interest and the residual information such as background. We construct the signatures of certain classes by the distribution of the energies among blocks which consist of wavelet packet coefficients. We developed an efficient procedure for adaptive selection of the characteristic blocks. We modified the CART algorithm in order to utilize it to be a decision unit in our scheme. However, this technology, which has many algorithmic variations, can be used to solve a wide range of classification and detection problems which are based on acoustic processing and, more generally, for classification and detection of signals which have near-periodic structure. We present results of successful application of the properly modified algorithm to detection of early symptoms of arterial hypertension in children via real-time analysis of pulse signals.

Adaptive spline interpolation (which is equivalent to the use of a type of radial basis function neural network) is investigated for digital image interpolation (i.e., for resolution enhancement). Test image results indicate that adaptive spline interpolation of a low-resolution image is superior to non-adaptive interpolation if the adjustable parameters are chosen to yield the best match to a known object in a corresponding high-resolution image.
