This paper describes a method and a tool that allows a teacher to interactively explain and construct basic algorithms to novice programmers by direct manipulations of variables, indexes and arrays. The method consists in gradually creating a program with the assistance of a tool that captures the teachers actions on the fly. The system offers possibilities for recording a sequence of actions and replaying them. Moreover it is able to take care of conditional statements, as well as loops and macro operations. The tool generates the corresponding program code. As a result, a complete algorithm can be designed and executed without writing a single line of code.

Understanding and debugging of data structures and algorithms (DSA) is one of the most common tasks in computer science. DSA tests have also become a standard threshold that software developers have to cross to "get the job". One major challenge in comprehending and debugging DSA implementations lies in establishing and maintaining mental models of the quintessentially complex and twisted networks of events that make up their dynamic runtime behavior. Despite the high level of difficulty of this crucial task, general purpose tools to help users understand or reason about DSA implementations still have very limited capabilities. In this work we present Dbux-PDG, a dynamic Program Dependency Graph extension for the Dbux omniscient debugger. It captures data and control flow, as well as data dependencies of a program's execution for visualization and user interaction. To deal with the immense complexity of non-trivial programs, it offers multiple layers of summarization, that allow the user to explore either the graph as a whole or in parts, one step at a time, as they see fit. We present our findings from applying Dbux-PDG to 94 diverse algorithms and explore its utility in several case studies. All visual results are made available in an online gallery. This paper presents an innovative approach to algorithm visualization in the domain of education for individuals with hearing and speech impairments. Recognizing the limited accessibility to algorithm visualization tools for the deaf and dumb community, our project aims to bridge this gap by developing an inclusive and interactive algorithm visualizer. Current educational resources lack practical tools to facilitate the understanding of complex algorithms for this specific user group. The significance of our work lies in its potential to empower deaf and dumb learners with valuable educational resources, enhancing their comprehension of algorithms and computer science concepts. Our work leverages *** and *** tech stacks to create a user-friendly and accessible web application. By utilizing these cutting-edge technologies, we ensure a dynamic, interactive, and responsive user interface tailored to the specific needs of our target audience. Our project stands out by using interactive animations and sidenotes to engage and educate our end users and the target group, setting it apart from existing solutions. This paper portrays the positive feedback received and the tangible enhancements in algorithm comprehension, serving as compelling evidence of the effectiveness of our approach, and affirming its success. In a nutshell, our work contributes to a more equitable educational environment and offers a promising course of action for further research and development in this field. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper we introduce CoBo, a collaborative system supporting cryptographic protocol learning, which offers an interface for the cooperative creation of concept keyboards. Concept keyboards are input interfaces created by the user during runtime with the goal of meeting the user's need for interaction. Experiments with an early version of CoBo have shown that, although students recognize the power of collaborative learning, they found a collaborative simulation of cryptographic algorithms should be associated with an additional step in the learning process: the collaborative design of the concept keyboards that will be used to perform the collaborative simulation of cryptographic protocols.

Effective visuals are essential for solving computational issues and comprehending complicated algorithms. Through the use of a web-based Sorting algorithm Visualizer and associated components, this study presents a fresh approach to algorithm visualization. We look at different approaches to sorting, approaches to solving problems, and computing difficulties. With the help of a visual depiction, users may better understand the inner workings of sorting algorithms like bubble sort, selection sort, insertion sort, merge sort, fast sort, etc. by using the Sorting algorithm Visualizer. Positive user feedback exhibiting better algorithmic comprehension is shown in the research, which highlights the Sorting algorithm Visualizer's efficacy in offering an interactive and complete platform for viewing and learning sorting algorithms. The project's accomplishments and room for expansion demonstrate how crucial visualization is to understanding algorithms and addressing computational problems. © 2023 IEEE.

The effects that technological advances have on education and how these advances can be used to improve the learning process are important research questions that attract many researchers to study different aspects of these issues. One such aspect is the development of interactive e-textbooks. Interactive e-textbooks are defined as electronic books that go beyond the static nature of printed textbooks. In this study, an e-textbook was developed that uses JavaScript for its interactive elements, and employs a concept map for navigational purposes. This e-textbook prototype was tested for the purpose of answering the following research questions. Does an e-textbook improve a student's learning as measured by his/her performance in a test? Does an e-textbook improve a student's learning and performance better than a printed textbook? Do students like interacting with the interface of an e-textbook and does it increase a student's engagement with the course material? Results showed that undergraduate students' performance improved after using the e-textbook. Results also showed that both undergraduate students and graduate students had a positive reaction to the e-textbook.

Visual algorithm Simulation (VAS) exercises are commonly used in Computer Science education to help learners understand the logic behind the abstractions used in programming. These exercises also present problems common in the daily work of Computer Science graduates. Aalto University uses the JSAV library to create VAS exercises and evaluate the solutions submitted by students. The evaluation process counts the amount of correct steps given by the user during the exercise. However, because more detailed data is not collected, teachers currently can not recreate and analyse the submitted solutions more in depth. This thesis presents the design, development and evaluation of an application prototype, which can be easily integrated in existing VAS exercises created with the JSAV library. The prototype is called Player Application, and it is designed as a service that can be easily integrated into other systems while still remaining independent. The Player Application consists of two main independent components: the Exercise Recorder and the Exercise Player. A third important contribution is the new JSON-based algorithm Animation Language, which is designed to describe, structure and store the data collected from the VAS exercises. The prototype was successfully tested in an online environment by importing the Exercise Recorder into existing exercises and replaying the submitted solutions in the Exercise Player. The tests showed that its design and architecture were valid. Next, the aim is to create a mature application, which can be used at Aalto University and other institutions, in addition the prototype still needs further development to support more VAS exercise types.

In this paper, we describe practical application of trends in visualization of algorithms. Ourpositive results of the utilized and processed methodology of software development, confirmed byseveral research and surveys, we apply for our own software development. The software is primarilyintended to investigate the properties of Quick Sort- one of the most frequently used sorting algorithmin practice. It is also supplemented by visualization of the sorting process itself for the purpose ofinteractive, visual and motivating form of familiarization with the given algorithm.

OpenDSA is a collection of open source tutorials for teaching data structures and algorithms. It was created with the goals of visualizing complex, abstract topics; increasing the amount of practice material available to students; and providing immediate feedback and incremental assessment. In this thesis, I first describe aspects of the OpenDSA architecture relevant to collecting user interaction data. I then present an analysis of the interaction log data gathered from three classes during Spring 2013. The analysis focuses on determining the time distribution of student activity, determining the time required for assignment completion, and exploring credit-seeking" behaviors and behavior related to non-required exercises. We identified clusters of students based on when they completed exercises, verified the reliability of estimated time requirements for exercises, provided evidence that a majority of students do not read the text, discovered a measurement that could be used to identify exercises that require additional development, and found evidence that students complete exercises after obtaining credit. Furthermore, we determined that slideshow usage was fairly high (even when credit was not ordered), and skipping to the end of slideshows was more common when credit was offered but also occurred when it was not.
