Feature selection for event discovery in social media: A comparative study

Microblog as one kind of typical social media has many research implications in social event discovery and social-media-based e-learning and collaborative learning. At present, researchers usually employ feature-based classification approaches to detect social events in microblogs. However, it is very common to get different results when different features are used in event discovery. Therefore, it has been a critical issue how to select appropriate features for event discovery in microblogs. In this paper, we analyze five different feature selection methods and present an improved method for selecting features for microblog-based event discovery. We compare all the methods on a real microblog dataset in terms of various metrics including precision, recall, and F-measure. And finally we discuss the best feature selection method for the event discovery in microblogs. To the best of our knowledge, there are no such comparative studies on feature selection for event discovery in social media, and this paper is expected to offer some useful references for the future research and applications on the event discovery in microblogs. This paper describes an evaluation framework that allows a standardized and quantitative comparison of IVUS lumen and media segmentation algorithms. This framework has been introduced at the MICCAI 2011 Computing and Visualization for (Intra)Vascular Imaging (CVII) workshop, comparing the results of eight teams that participated. We describe the available data-base comprising of multi-center, multi-vendor and multi-frequency IVUS datasets, their acquisition, the creation of the reference standard and the evaluation measures. The approaches address segmentation of the lumen, the media, or both borders;semi- or fully-automatic operation;and 2-D vs. 3-D methodology. Three performance measures for quantitative analysis have been proposed. The results of the evaluation indicate that segmentation of the vessel lumen and media is possible with an accuracy that is comparable to manual annotation when semi-automatic methods are used, as well as encouraging results can be obtained also in case of fully-automatic segmentation. The analysis performed in this paper also highlights the challenges in IVUS segmentation that remains to be solved. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An overview of MINLP algorithms and their implementation in Muriqui Optimizer

We present an overview of the main algorithms in the literature for convex mixed integer nonlinear programming and discuss aspects of their implementation in a new open source computational package called Muriqui Optimizer. We provide extensive computational results comparing the implementations of all approaches considered on a set of 343 benchmark test problems. Finally, we present to the technical and scientific community the new software Muriqui Optimizer.

A RESEARCH-ORIENTED TREATMENT PLANNING PROGRAM SYSTEM

The function of a treatment planning program is to graphically simulate radiation dose distributions from proposed radiation therapy treatments. While many such programs are available which provide this much needed service, none addresses the question of how to intercompare calculation and display techniques. A program system designed for support of research efforts, particularly development and testing of new calculation algorithms, is described. The system emphasizes a modular flexible structure, enabling programs to be developed somewhat as interchangeable parts. The multiple variants of a calculation algorithm can be compared without undue software overhead or additional data management. Unusual features of the system include extensive use of command procedures, logical names and a structured language (PASCAL). These features are described along with other implementation details. Obstacles, limitations and future applications are also discussed.

Somatic copy-number alterations (SCNAs) are an important type of structural variation affecting tumor pathogenesis. Accurate detection of genomic regions with SCNAs is crucial for cancer genomics as these regions contain likely drivers of cancer development. Deep sequencing technology provides single-nucleotide resolution genomic data and is considered one of the best measurement technologies to detect SCNAs. Although several algorithms have been developed to detect SCNAs from whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing data, their relative performance has not been studied. Here, we have compared ten SCNA detection algorithms in both simulated and primary tumor deep sequencing data. In addition, we have evaluated the applicability of exome sequencing data for SCNA detection. Our results show that (i) clear differences exist in sensitivity and specificity between the algorithms, (ii) SCNA detection algorithms are able to identify most of the complex chromosomal alterations and (iii) exome sequencing data are suitable for SCNA detection.

IOHexperimenter: Benchmarking Platform for Iterative Optimization Heuristics

We present IOHexperimenter, the experimentation module of the IOHprofiler project. IOHexperimenter aims at providing an easy-to-use and customizable toolbox for benchmarking iterative optimization heuristics such as local search, evolutionary and genetic algorithms, and Bayesian optimization techniques. IOHexperimenter can be used as a stand-alone tool or as part of a benchmarking pipeline that uses other modules of the IOHprofiler *** provides an efficient interface between optimization problems and their solvers while allowing for granular logging of the optimization process. Its logs are fully compatible with existing tools for interactive data analysis, which significantly speeds up the deployment of a benchmarking pipeline. The main components of IOHexperimenter are the environment to build customized problem suites and the various logging options that allow users to steer the granularity of the data records.

A comprehensive comparison of accuracy and practicality of different types of algorithms for pre-impact fall detection using both young and old adults

This study aims to comprehensively compare the accuracy and practicality of three different types of algorithms for pre-impact fall detection using both young and old subjects. Threshold-based, conventional machine learning (SVM) and deep learning (ConvLSTM) algorithms were compared. Results showed that ConvLSTM had an ac-curacy of 99.16 % (sensitivity: 99.32 %, specificity: 99.01 %) and an averaged lead time of 403 ms on young subjects, which outperformed SVM (97.16 %, 385 ms) and much superior to the threshold-based algorithm (89.06 %, 333 ms). In addition, latency tests on an embedded device showed that the Lite model of ConvLSTM had a low latency of 2.1 ms, which was comparable to the threshold-based algorithm (<1 ms) but much lower than SVM (86.9 ms). The feasibility and effectiveness of applying algorithms trained on young subjects to old subjects were also validated. These findings suggested that ConvLSTM has great potential for detecting pre -impact falls and preventing fall-related injuries.

Comparative Study Between Machine Learning algorithms Applied to Support QA Contracting Processes

This study comprehensively compares different machine learning algorithms to assess their applicability in Quality Assurance (QA) contracting procedures. The evaluated algorithms encompass Nearest Neighbors, Linear SVM, Radial SVM, Gaussian Process, Decision Tree, Neural Network, Logistic Regression, Naive Bayes, and QDA. Following the Knowledge Discovery Database (KDD) process, the methodology includes a diverse set of evaluation metrics such as F1-Score, recall, accuracy, and AUC-ROC, as well as learning curves, boundary maps, confusion matrices, Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC), and complexity curves. According to the Gartner Magic Quadrant assessment, the results suggest that Neural Network, QDA, and Gaussian Process models exhibit strong performance and thorough evaluation, making them optimal for the case study presented in the paper. In contrast, Nearest Neighbors and Linear SVM models are considered suboptimal, indicating an opportunity to explore the reasons behind their behavior in the case study and how to modify them for improved results. The other algorithms also present various possibilities for adaptation to the current case study, either as models with limited analysis or as imprecise models that can offer valuable insights for future work on optimizing them more effectively. This study significantly contributes to advancing machine learning applications in recruitment procedures.

The effect of overabundant projection directions on 3D reconstruction algorithms

The experimental process of collecting images from macromolecules in an electron microscope is such that it does not allow for prior specification of the angular distribution of the projection images. As a consequence, an uneven distribution of projection directions may occur. Concerns have been raised recently about the behavior of 3D reconstruction algorithms for the case of unevenly distributed projections. It has been illustrated on experimental data that in the case of a heavily uneven distribution of projection directions some algorithms tend to elongate the reconstructed volumes along the overloaded direction so much as to make a quantitative biological analysis impossible. In answer to these concerns we have developed a strategy for quantitative comparison and optimization of 3D reconstruction algorithms. We apply this strategy to quantitatively analyze algebraic reconstruction techniques (ART) with blobs, simultaneous iterative reconstruction techniques (SIRT) with voxels, and weighted backprojection (WBP). We show that the elongation artifacts that had been previously reported can be strongly reduced. With our specific choices for the free parameters of the three algorithms, NMP reconstructions tend to be inferior to those obtained with either SIRT or ART and the results obtained with ART are comparable to those with SIRT, but at a very small fraction of the computational cost of SIRT.
