Fault-Tolerant Temperature Control algorithm for IoT Networks in Smart Buildings

The monitoring of the Internet of things networks depends to a great extent on the availability and correct functioning of all the network nodes that collect data. This network nodes all of which must correctly satisfy their purpose to ensure the efficiency and high quality of monitoring and control of the internet of things networks. This paper focuses on the problem of fault-tolerant maintenance of a networked environment in the domain of the internet of things. Based on continuous-time Markov chains, together with a cooperative control algorithm, a novel feedback model-based predictive hybrid control algorithm is proposed to improve the maintenance and reliability of the internet of things network. Virtual sensors are substituted for the sensors that the algorithm predicts will not function properly in future time intervals;this allows for maintaining reliable monitoring and control of the internet of things network. In this way, the internet of things network improves its robustness since our fault tolerant control algorithm finds the malfunction nodes that are collecting incorrect data and self-correct this issue replacing malfunctioning sensors with new ones. In addition, the proposed model is capable of optimising sensor positioning. As a result, data collection from the environment can be kept stable. The developed continuous-time control model is applied to guarantee reliable monitoring and control of temperature in a smart supermarket. Finally, the efficiency of the presented approach is verified with the results obtained in the conducted case study.

Clustering-Based algorithms for Multivehicle Task Assignment in a Time-Invariant Drift Field

This paper studies the multivehicle task assignment problem where several dispersed vehicles need to visit a set of target locations in a time-invariant drift field while trying to minimize the total travel time. Using optimal control theory, we first design a path planning algorithm to minimize the time for each vehicle to travel between two given locations in the drift field. The path planning algorithm provides the cost matrix for the target assignment, and generates routes once the target locations are assigned to a vehicle. Then, we propose several clustering strategies to assign the targets, and we use two metrics to determine the visiting sequence of the targets clustered to each vehicle. Mainly used to specify the minimum time for a vehicle to travel between any two target locations, the cost matrix is obtained using the path planning algorithm, and is in general asymmetric due to time-invariant currents of the drift field. We show that one of the clustering strategies can obtain a min-cost arborescence of the asymmetric target-vehicle graph where the weight of a directed edge between two vertices is the minimum travel time from one vertex to the other respecting the orientation. Using tools from graph theory, a lower bound on the optimal solution is found, which can be used to measure the proximity of a solution from the optimal. Furthermore, by integrating the target clustering strategies with the target visiting metrics, we obtain several task assignment algorithms. Among them, two algorithms guarantee that all the target locations will be visited within a computable maximal travel time, which is at most twice of the optimal when the cost matrix is symmetric. Finally, numerical simulations show that the algorithms can quickly lead to a solution that is close to the optimal.

A New Decomposition Solver for Complex Electromagnetic Problems

A parallel higher-order method of moments (HOMoM) with a newly developed reduced-communication, lower-upper (RCLU) decomposition solver is proposed in this article. The method uses 201,600 central processing unit (CPU) cores on a supercomputer located in Guangzhou, China. Our code achieves an extremely high parallel efficiency when simulating a large aircraft that has been discretized in the method-of-moments (MoM) context, using a higher-order quadrilateral patch basis, into approximately 1.06 million unknowns for the surface-current distribution. Remarkably, its solution using the classical lower-upper (LU) solver only takes roughly half an hour. In addition, a review of the in-core and out-of-core algorithms of an HOMoM is presented, with a focus on their parallel implementation. The parallel performance of the methodology is also demonstrated on some challenging applications.

This article presents an efficient dataflow methodology for solving Euler atmospheric dynamic equations. The authors map a complex Euler stencil kernel into a single field-programmable gate array chip and develop a long streaming pipeline that can perform 956 mixed-precision operations per cycle. Their dataflow design outperforms traditional multicore and many-core counterparts in both time to solution and energy to solution.

An Intelligent Packing Programming for Space Station Extravehicular Missions

Packing programming for extravehicular missions to the space station is the process of arranging a set of missions into multiple extravehicular activities. It is an interesting combinatorial optimization problem developed from the traditional bin-packing problem. This paper first formulates a practical mathematical model that considers both the constraints of the time window for each extravehicular mission and the spacewalk time per astronaut. An Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm with a self-adaptation strategy and a new pheromone matrix characterizing the relationship between any two extravehicular missions is then proposed. The simulation results on various independent experiments show that the proposed ACO algorithm is capable of producing optimal packing programming schemes with a success rate of over 90%, which is acceptable for application to real-world problems.

Energy storage system scheduling for peak demand reduction using evolutionary combinatorial optimisation

This paper is concerned with finding an optimal energy storage system (ESS) schedule for peak demand reduction and load-levelling given only the information certainly available to and controllable by the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) which are the substation demand profile information and the DNO-owned ESS parameters. Methods such as set-point control are usually suboptimal and can create new peaks. Other methods require more parameters and actions than the DNO can fully control to form the basis for optimisation and can be computationally complex. The method presented in this paper uses simple heuristics to find possible optimal operation points for the ESS and improves the solutions found using genetic algorithm optimisation. A case study is presented showing a UK distribution network with a peak capacity violation which is resolved using the method and the results are compared to a closed-loop set-point control method.

Complex human-engineered systems involve an interconnection of multiple decision makers (or agents) whose collective behavior depends on a compilation of local decisions that are based on partial information about each other and the state of the environment [1]-[4]. Strategic interactions among agents in these systems can be modeled as a multiplayer simultaneous-move game [5]-[8]. The agents involved can have conflicting objectives, and it is natural to make decisions based upon optimizing individual payoffs or costs.

A Heuristic Combinatorial Optimization algorithm for Load-Leveling and Peak Demand Reduction using Energy Storage Systems

A method for applying combinatorial optimization algorithms to Energy Storage System (ESS) scheduling is presented in this paper. Scheduling is essential for the integration of ESS in electrical networks at grid level or at consumer level to achieve the objectives of integration such as constraint management or energy cost reduction and for efficient storage dispatch. It also shows that for a time-of-use (ToU) tariff scheme based on the shape of the demand profile with higher prices tied to peak periods, effective load-leveling, and peak demand reduction always leads to energy cost reduction. While other methods usually require more information such as generation cost curves or ToU tariffs to schedule ESS, the proposed method uses only demand profile information and ESS parameters to achieve load-leveling and peak demand reduction and also considers the entire optimization time horizon. This is done by combining heuristic bin packing and subset sum algorithms with specific modifications to the standard forms and through transformations. A case study is presented in which the algorithm is used to schedule household ESS with repurposed electric vehicle batteries and the results are compared to a demand response scheme on the same setup.

Recent advances in airborne and spaceborne hyperspectral imaging technology have provided end users with rich spectral, spatial, and temporal information. They have made a plethora of applications feasible for the analysis of large areas of the Earth?s surface. However, a significant number of factors-such as the high dimensions and size of the hyperspectral data, the lack of training samples, mixed pixels, light-scattering mechanisms in the acquisition process, and different atmospheric and geometric distortions-make such data inherently nonlinear and complex, which poses major challenges for existing methodologies to effectively process and analyze the data sets. Hence, rigorous and innovative methodologies are required for hyperspectral image (HSI) and signal processing and have become a center of attention for researchers worldwide.
