Although surveys suggest positive student attitudes toward the use of algorithm animations, it is not clear that they improve learning outcomes. The Graph algorithm Animation Tool, or Galant, challenges and motivates students to engage more deeply with algorithm concepts, without distracting them with programming language details or GUIs. Eclipse Prediction algorithms for Low-Earth-Orbiting Satellites

Earth-orbiting satellites experience a partial or full eclipse when they pass through the night side of the Earth. These eclipse events can have significant impacts on the satellite due to the dramatic change of the solar radiation incident. It is therefore essential to propose a high-precision eclipse prediction algorithm or even a space-borne algorithm applied to the satellite to predict the eclipse events autonomously. This paper proposes two eclipse prediction algorithms based on an atypical eclipse condition. The first is the numerical variable-step algorithm whose computation efficiency is superior to the previous fixed-step algorithm due to adopting multiscale step sizes. The other is the autonomous space-borne algorithm, which, based on the analytical solution of the eclipse condition, predicts the penumbra and umbra. Both algorithms have been implemented to the Sun-synchronous orbit and the prediction results are compared with that of the Satellite Tool Kit software. It is indicated that the numerical variable-step algorithm is of high prediction accuracy, whereas the autonomous space-borne algorithm is more suitable for the on-board processor to predict the eclipse due to its reduced computational demands.

Predicting poaching for wildlife protection

Wildlife species such as tigers and elephants are under the threat of poaching. To combat poaching, conservation agencies ("defenders") need to 1) anticipate where the poachers are likely to poach and 2) plan effective patrols. We propose an anti-poaching tool CAPTURE (Comprehensive Anti-Poaching tool with Temporal and observation Uncertainty REasoning), which helps the defenders achieve both goals. CAPTURE builds a novel hierarchical model for poacher-patroller interaction. It considers the patroller's imperfect detection of signs of poaching, the complex temporal dependencies in the poacher's behaviors, and the defender's lack of knowledge of the number of poachers. Further, CAPTURE uses a new game-theoretic algorithm to compute the optimal patrolling strategies and plan effective patrols. This paper investigates the computational challenges that CAPTURE faces. First, we present a detailed analysis of parameter separation and cell abstraction, two novel approaches used by CAPTURE to efficiently learn the parameters in the hierarchical model. Second, we propose two heuristics-piecewise linear approximation and greedy planning-to speed up the computation of the optimal patrolling strategies. In this paper, we discuss the lessons learned from using CAPTURE to analyze real-world poaching data collected over 12 years in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.

Networked systems are systems of interconnected components in which the dynamics of each component are influenced by the behavior of neighboring ones. Examples of networked systems include biological networks;critical physical infrastructures, such as power grids and transportation systems;and critical cyber infrastructures, such as the Internet and social networks. A widely studied method for controlling networked systems is to directly control a subset of components, or input nodes, that then steer the remaining nodes to their desired states. This article presents computationally efficient techniques for selecting input nodes to drive the system to a desired state in the presence of time constraints, - disturbances, and changes in network topology. The proposed methods are applicable to problems including selecting generators to damp unstable oscillations in power systems, identifying genes and proteins that regulate biological networks, and executing formation maneuvers in unmanned vehicles. The article also gives an overview of discrete optimization methods and their applications in sensing and control.

Estimating Sag and Wind-Induced Motion of Overhead Power Lines With Current and Magnetic-Flux Density Measurements

Overhead high-voltage transmission lines (HVTLs) extend over diverse geographic regions under uneven weather conditions, where sag and wind-induced conductor motion poses serious issues for uninterrupted power distribution by HVTLs. Sag reduces the ground clearance of the line, whereas conductor motion may result in phase to phase short circuit, and damage to support structure. A real-time estimate of these factors is deemed important to develop requisite prevention measures. In this paper, we present a novel method to cater for sag and motion estimation in real-world scenarios. Our method can detect a change in sag and conductor motion, whether it is symmetrical or unsymmetrical to one or more conductors. We require uniaxial magnetic-field (MF) sensors mounted at support tower, equal to conductors, and synchronized with current-transformer (CT) data at substation. The sensors provide noncontact MF measurements, which are time stamped and transmitted to the substation. The data are then simultaneously processed along with electric current readings from the CT. For processing, we developed a unified algorithm that first distinguishes variation in sag from motion in conductor. Then, it estimates the corresponding sag or motion in any of the conductors. The method is verified first by numerical simulations, and then with a scaled setup in laboratory. Different test cases were identified by the algorithm. Error remains <= 1% for unsymmetrical sag estimation. In addition, trajectory of a conductor in motion is retrieved. Where the root mean square error between actual and retrieved conductor amplitude was only 0.0833 for the observation window of 200 ms.

We propose a blind adaptive reduced-rank widely linear beamforming algorithm using the generalized sidelobe canceller structure for interference suppression. Astructured Krylov-subspace-based approach is devised to construct the dimensionality reducing transformation matrix, and a recursive least-squares algorithm is developed according to the widely linear constrained constant modulus criterion to update the reduced-rank filter. We analyze the convergence and complexity of the proposed algorithm and validate its performance gains through simulations.

Pattern Recommendation in Task-Oriented Applications: A Multi-Objective Perspective

Task-oriented pattern mining is to find the most popular and complete pattern for task-oriented applications such as goods match recommendation and print area recommendation. In these applications, the measure support is used to capture the popularity of patterns, while the measure occupancy is adopted to capture the completeness of patterns. Existing methods for mining task-oriented patterns usually combine these two measures as one measure for optimization, and require users to set the prior parameters such as the minimum support threshold min_sup, the minimum occupancy threshold min_occ and the relative importance preference lambda between support and occupancy. However, it is very difficult for users to set optimal values for these parameters especially when they do not have any prior knowledge in real applications. To overcome this challenge, we propose an evolutionary approach for pattern mining from a multi-objective perspective since support and occupancy are conflicting. Specifically, we first transform this pattern mining problem into a multi-objective optimization problem. Then we propose an effective multi-objective pattern mining evolutionary algorithm for finding optimal pattern set, which does not need to specify the prior parameters min_sup, min_occ and lambda. Finally, we select best patterns from the obtained pattern set for final pattern recommendation. Experimental results on two real task-oriented applications, namely, goods match recommendation in Taobao and print area recommendation in SmartPrint, and several large synthetic datasets demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed method in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency.

Control of Single-Axis Rotation INS by Tracking Differentiator Based Fuzzy PID

In order to improve the ability of rotating turntable to resist the external disturbance in the single-axis rotation modulation inertial navigation system (SRMINS) and ensure smooth running of the turntable, we designed a dual closed-loop controller. The conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) algorithm was employed in the position loop, and a tracking differentiator based fuzzy PID algorithm was proposed and used in the speed loop, to realize the steady speed control of continuous rotation in the SRMINS. The introduction of the tracking differentiator (TD) guarantees the reliability of the differential signal extraction. Furthermore, the combination of the TD and the fuzzy adaptive PID controller leads to the smooth motion of the turntable without overshoot. The robustness and better stability margin of the system can also be achieved while the static error is eliminated and the performance of fuzzy control is improved. Simulation results demonstrate that the system has many merits such as fast response, no overshoot, and better robustness. It is also verified that regulating the PID parameters in real time by the fuzzy control rules effectively improves the dynamic and static performance of the system, and the requirement on stable rotation speed of the SRMINS is satisfied.
