In statistical learning for real-world large-scale data problems, one must often resort to "streaming" algorithms which operate sequentially on small batches of data. In this work, we present an analysis of the information-theoretic limits of mini-batch inference in the context of generalized linear models and low-rank matrix factorization. In a controlled Bayes-optimal setting, we characterize the optimal performance and phase transitions as a function of mini-batch size. We base part of our results on a detailed analysis of a mini-batch version of the approximate message-passing algorithm (Mini-AMP), which we introduce. Additionally, we show that this theoretical optimality carries over into real-data problems by illustrating that Mini-AMP is competitive with standard streaming algorithms for clustering.

Centralized joint processing has been demonstrated to achieve significant performance gain over the conventional per-cell processing by avoiding the inter-cell interference in cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), but full scale cooperation over the entire network is infeasible due to its huge computational complexity. The goal of this paper is to design remote radio head (RRH) clustering and the associated power allocation algorithm under computational resource constraint for C-RANs, which is challenging due to the combinatorial clustering problem with non-convex constraints. To overcome the challenge, our design consists of two technical steps. 1) Considering the maximization of the sum data rate, we reformulate both the objective function and the computational resource constraint via relaxation and successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. 2) By exploiting the structure of this problem, we propose a low-complexity algorithm to decouple RRH clustering and power allocation and solve them iteratively. Furthermore, we prove the convergence property of the proposed iterative algorithm. Finally, our proposed algorithm is evaluated by simulation to show its superiority on throughput performance over conventional algorithms.

The controller program is the core of a safety-critical control system. However, the testing of controller program has been facing challenges because of the oracle problem. Since Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller is the most commonly used controller in the industry, this paper proposes to apply Metamorphic Testing (MT) to test it. Our experimental results show that MT is effective in testing PID controller.

Over the past decade, numerous systems have been proposed to detect and subsequently prevent or mitigate security vulnerabilities. However, many existing intrusion or anomaly detection solutions are limited to a subset of the traffic due to scalability issues, hence failing to operate at line-rate on large, highspeed datacentre networks. In this paper, we present a two-level solution for anomaly detection leveraging independent execution and message passing semantics. We employ these constructs within a network-wide distributed anomaly detection framework that allows for greater detection accuracy and bandwidth cost saving through attack path reconstruction. Experimental results using real operational traffic traces and known network attacks generated through the Pytbull IDS evaluation framework, show that our approach is capable of detecting anomalies in a timely manner while allowing reconstruction of the attack path, hence further enabling the composition of advanced mitigation strategies. The resulting system shows high detection accuracy when compared to similar techniques, at least 20% better at detecting anomalies, and enables full path reconstruction even at smallto- moderate attack traffic intensities (as a fraction of the total traffic), saving up to 75% of bandwidth due to early attack detection.

One of the main fundamental problems in designing a sensor network is to detect and locate their positions. Hence, sensors can be utilized for data collection in order to detect and organize the objects of interest. In this paper, we present a novel mechanism for object localization and detection in protected areas and surveillance zones. The goal of the proposed approach is to enhance area supervision and localize objects efficiently in wireless sensor networks.

The information obtained from the analysis of DNA microarrays is relevant to identify and predict illness, improve treatments, and to determine which genes are responsible to provoke a specific disease. However, the enormous quantity of genes and the few samples to be analyzed affect the performance of any classifier. For this reason, it is necessary to develop a methodology that combines a robust feature selection technique with a classification algorithm for classifying DNA microarrays. In this paper, we combine a feature selection technique based on the Artificial Bee Colony algorithm with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Furthermore, this ANN is automatically designed by a Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm that optimizes the synaptic weights, the architecture, and the transfer functions at the same time. To test the accuracy of the proposed methodology, we use the Leukemia AML-ALL dataset.

A discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method is proposed in this work to analyze printed circuit board (PCB) power/ground plate-pair having arbitrarily shaped anti pads. To apply proper excitation source over the irregular anti pad, the implemented wave port magnetic current excitation is expanded by the electric eigen-modes of the anti-pad that are calculated via either numerical approach or analytical method. Based on the orthogonality of eigen-modes, the temporal mode expansion coefficient for each mode can be conveniently extracted. Besides, considering the presence of decoupling capacitors, the whole physical system can be split into field and circuit subsystems. For the field subsystem, it is governed by the Maxwell's equations, thus it will be solved by DGTD method. For the circuit subsystem, the modified nodal analysis (MNA) is applied. In order to achieve the coupling between the field and circuit subsystems, a lumpled port is defined at the interface between the field and circuit subsystems. To verify the proposed algorithm, several representative examples are benchmarked.

Considering the growth of distributed energy generation systems in distribution networks, quick and precise protection and at the same time low cost is very perceptible. This protection includes directional relays beside overcurrent relays. The directional relays in the network require voltage and current relays;therefore, the cost of using this type of protection in the distribution network is very high. This is the reason that in directional relays operation only using current sensor can be a proper choice. This paper presents a simple and quick and at the same time efficient algorithm which is used to detect the fault from rising the current slope and determining the direction of the fault current from Lissajous curves. Simulation results based on the introduced algorithm are presented.

High-level synthesis is increasingly being used to automatically translate existing software algorithms into hardware quickly and efficiently. Typically, the circuits created by HLS are implemented on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). While the fine-grained architecture of an FPGA is well suited for general circuit implementation, it can result in excessive routing resource utilization for larger dataflow circuits such as those generated by HLS. As an alternative, we present a medium-grained reconfigurable architecture tailored to implementing HLS generated circuits. The proposed architecture achieves a 5.4x reduction in critical path delay compared to a standard FPGA during initial testing.

To localize a mobile vehicle in a predefined area, it is possible to resort to a positioning system using beacons. The questions arising then are: what is the right number of beacons to deploy, and where should they be positioned to accurately localize the target. With a sensor placement algorithm, it is possible to generate a configuration of the beacons that optimize some quality criteria. However, designing the objectives to optimize is not simple, and the solution of the sensor placement algorithm may not always ensures a good localization in practice. This work evaluates the impact of the objectives of a sensor placement algorithm on different localization techniques. We show that criteria based on trilateration are not sufficient anymore when the localization is done with other techniques than trilateration. Indeed, data fusion-based localization algorithms use additional information such as odometry, and are less sensitive to poor coverage or poor beacon configurations than trilateration. Thus, designing new criteria taking into account the dynamics of the vehicle would probably improve further the placements and use less beacons for the same performance.
